Here we go again.

The rule is that anyone can identify as anything and they must be respected for that.

This rule is taught by anyone taking social equality 101 because it means that no one is forced into a category they don't like.

You might very well be bisexual, but if you identify as lesbian you must be respected as such.

I know this rule sounds strange, but if you think about it, it's a patch on a system which is already broken - the fact that anyone is judged for their sexuality or race or mental ability or anything.

It took a while for my scientific brain to get my head around it too, OP, but it's a fix to a big problem and, on the whole, is way less harmful than making someone something they're not happy with.

I think of her as bisexual. That's just me though. When I was in high school I definitely shipped her with Tara, Tara and only Tara, but as I look back on it, Willow had a very good relationship with Oz that fell apart because of circumstances beyond her control. Because of this and her interactions with Xander, I think you really can't say that she wasn't bi.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, seeing that quote again made me tear up. How much of a wuss am I?

And I agree, I think Willow was bi too. (she had a long crush on Xander, a minor crush on Giles, and of course Oz. I get the fluidity of sexuality, but I think if you jump from straight to lesbian instantly upon your first same-sex crush, it's much more likely you're simply misslabeling than it is that your sexuality made a complete U-turn in a matter of days)

i used to be really confused about my 'lesbian tendencies' back in the day until i discovered what bisexuality is and that people like that exist and that i'm not just denying that i'm a lesbian by also being attracted to guys. made things a lot clearer for me when i found out.

so i could get behind one of your theories, there

I'm gonna get snapped at for this perhaps, but yeah, Lesbian is a pretty strong word for a girl who on one show dated and fucked around with the SAME number of girls as she did boys. She loved Tara and Oz and she fucked around with Xander and Kennedy. (Yes, I know friendship was also involved, I'm just saying it wasn't romantic love)

Where I come from that's called bisexuality. (Or pan-sexuality, I can totally see her hooking up with some trans gender queer person...)

I don't doubt a person when they say they are gay, or straight, but that's only if I have ZERO evidence to the contrary. I'm not saying that one shouldn't be able to decide what they are, but I'm so doubtful in this case. Unreliable narrator is a perfectly applicable term here. This is neither good, bad, or accusatory, but the assumption that her switch to dating two girls after being with two guys strictly defines a gender preference just because she said it, is just as outrageous and saying a character can't have a homosexual relationship because no where in cannon have they done so (and oh fandom, you know you love that. *achem* Rorschach *achem*)

Not trying to get into a fight, just responding to the OP Anon's comment okay? Peace in the valley kiddos!

Oh, and some of us haven't been super active in fandom and haven't had this convo yet, but are still huge fans.

How's this for honesty: I was pissed when Willow got together with Tara. I felt it was coerced as a character choice, and the second-worst romantic development of the show. The funny thing is, I love Tara--thought she was a fabulous and interesting character, but in my estimation, she was a rebound girl for Willow. The only thing that would make it work is if Willow was looking for something completely different from Oz; but in fact, the relationships themselves were very similar (both rather passive, both keeping secrets about themselves at the beginning). I don't buy 100% lesbianism for Willow, and--since I'm commenting anonymously--I fully expect much more invested fans than I will flame me for this. Go ahead.

I'm just going to go with: she's not a person, she's a character. When she said that, the writers had the idea that she was straight. When she said she was a lesbian, the writers had something different in mind.

I guess it does make for interesting discussion, but at the end of the day... Willow isn't a person at all, and that's a flaw I can't get around. /Party Pooper

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I swear we have this secret once a week at least. For the record, I agree with the "She's a lesbian!" crowd that past straight relationships don't automatically make someone bi. I also agree with the "She's at least bisexual!" crowd that saying "Lesbian now!" doesn't automatically negate the love and sexual attraction someone felt for and acted upon with a male.

I understand we want to categorize people, but really why do we need to here? If this was a real person, you'd have to be prepared for some confrontation if you think you can decide sexuality for someone else. BUT! Willow is a fictional character.

TPTB at Buffy are hardly experts on sexuality or consistent characterization. They wanted to tell a story a certain way, but the beauty of the fact that this is, once again, a fictional character means that people can interpret things their own way as well.

I've seen people ship just about everything under the sun. Die-hard straight male characters on TV shows are slashed like crazy. Cartoons are shipped. Characters from entirely different shows are crossover-shipped. Different species are shipped. Humans are shipped with robots. For the love of all that's good in this world, why do people get so damned hung up on whether or not we can/should ship a female character with her canon male or canon female or noncanon male or noncanon female or canon monster/vampire or noncanon monster/vampire etc etc etc love interest? If the fic (for example) is in character and respectful, a good writer could make anything credible. So ship whatever the hell you want, because it's a fictional character! I'm pretty sure fandom at large is big enough for all of us to find most of what we want without having to police what other people want.

It...really felt good to get that off my chest.

Again?? Really? Really??

So, how many times do we have to explain that the fact that Willow identifies as a lesbian does not, in fact, invalidate her relationship with Oz? And why are people still pissed about this??

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
In this scenario, Tara was Willow's glasses.

Willow didn't discover her sexuality until she met Tara. That doesn't erase or lessen her earlier relationships but those relationships aren't proof of Willow's bisexuality. Most gay men & women have het relationships before they come out. I believe this was the case with Willow & Willow/Oz.

god just don't care anymore just don't care just don't care

sexuality is so fluid, does it really matter what label we put on it? i'll admit there's a part of me that doesn't want her to be a lesbian because i'm a dude and i thought the character was really cute in s1-s3. otoh, i can see how having a lesbian character on a popular show is important to some people and how it's something that actually does matter. in the end, fandom is all about non-canonicity - fanfiction is about DEVIATIONS from canon, our discussions are about EXTRAPOLATIONS from canon as much as deductions from it, and in the end does it really matter what word you use and i just got fed up writing this

Tara/Willow shippers tend to forget all about Oz

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
For the record, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Alyson Hannigan considered Willow bisexual and was playing her as such.

I'm not 100% sure on this though. Couldn't find a quote, but I think it makes sense.

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Willow could have easily just discovered her sexuality when she started dating Tara. Oz doesn't have to be an issue. That being said, I do think the topic of bisexuality is curiously glossed over in the verse (Giles and Ethan come off as angry exs, something one of the writers said was intentional, Angel and Spike are reduced to a joke reference, and Faith's dealings with Buffy has definite sexual overtones), but Willow in particular doesn't bother me.

What is up with the Willow sexuality secrets lately?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I'm a lesbian, but I have been in love with men before. I've even been attracted to them and had sex with them-- but I've never been as attracted to men as I have been to women. I was attracted to the men because I loved them, but I didn't really get anything from the sex. How to put this... I guess I was attracted to the idea of being in a heterosexual relationship, and really, I still wish I was bi. At the end of the day though, I'm still the lesbian I always was.

Anyway, no-one could ever compare to Oz. I always thought that was why Willow identified as a lesbian? (And I think the thing with Xander was due to hormones and sexual frustration.)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that quote. It's pretty much about how I feel about my ex-boyfriend.

Here's a Question

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Buffy had sex with a chick in the comics. She then decided she didn't want a relationship, but it was clearly a difficult decision.

Is she straight?

I don't care what anyone says, I'll always believe Oz is Willow's soul mate. They just complimented each other so well.

That's not to say she didn't love Tara. But I still think Oz was her "one".
