The rule is that anyone can identify as anything and they must be respected for that.

This rule is taught by anyone taking social equality 101 because it means that no one is forced into a category they don't like.

You might very well be bisexual, but if you identify as lesbian you must be respected as such.

I know this rule sounds strange, but if you think about it, it's a patch on a system which is already broken - the fact that anyone is judged for their sexuality or race or mental ability or anything.

It took a while for my scientific brain to get my head around it too, OP, but it's a fix to a big problem and, on the whole, is way less harmful than making someone something they're not happy with.

I think the reason we have this argument over and over again regarding Willow though is because she's fictional.

I respect people's labels in reality, but I don't always trust writers (particularly straight ones) to properly tell the story of a lesbian woman or a bi woman.

So do I 100% believe Willow's a lesbian? Probably not.

This.

I also tend to think that actually having a discussion about this kind of thing - read, fictional characters and how they might or might not represent certain views on sexuality in society, how they can be interpreted in light of this or that event in their canon - isn't an omg bad thing. I think it's a good thing, because it lets people explore and explain their own views. Why do I see it as X? Why do you see it as Y? What do you base this view on? Oh, that's interesting. See, I always saw this as... and so forth. Fiction is playing around with ideas that might not be applicable in real life, and that's one of its strengths.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-05 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Unlike for a real person, there is no one, objective truth to Willow's identity; we can speculate about it all we want.

Exactly. Also, we got to see her relationships up close and personally. With a real lesbian or bi-identifying woman, you wouldn't have those details. You would trust her on her word alone...but here the "fly on the wall" view confuses things for a lot of people.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I have no issue with her identifying as a lesbian. I really don't! I'll call her gay all day long. This doesn't upset me.

What upsets me is when she catches any hint or implication or suggestion that she may be at all straight (even just a little bi), that she may have ANY feelings for ANY male character again, if ever any male character flirts even a little, it's "HEY BACK OFF I'M GAY NOW GAWD GUYS." Because while she may have found a better path, while she may be happier with women now that she's discovered this possibility, WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE, what she had with Oz was real. Xander can be written off as a childhood crush and puppy love, platonic feelings confused for love, whatever. But Oz was not. So if she denies even the slightest remaining hint of heterosexual inclinations she has, then I get mad at HER.

Yeah, okay. TL;DR: Willow, you don't HATE cock, you just don't PREFER it. Get over yourself.

[identity profile] demeure.livejournal.com 2011-04-05 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that, but at the same time, I see why she'd do it. I mean, she--even fictionally--lives in a society that constantly assumes that she's heterosexual until proven otherwise. At least, I assume this, because that's how our society operates; you have to announce non-heterosexual identity and then even sometimes you are questioned about it (especially with bisexual identity), and especially with women's personal sexual identification there are a lot of men that don't think a woman is being serious when she says "no, I like women" (think about the trope of the creepy guy going, "oh, you're a lesbian couple? do you like threesomes? hurrhurrhurr", because ugh that shit happens). Or worse, completely don't respect her right to make that determination.

It's not necessarily the honest or the best response to insist monosexuality, but it's a defense mechanism and I don't get mad at her for it. (It'd be hypocritical; I did similar things when I was younger, sillier, and far less confident in my ability to assert myself.)

See, I can even understand when she does that around strangers or people she doesn't know as well, but she tends to be pretty overly-defensive with Buffy and Xander, too. And maybe I'm just not understanding her frame of mind as well, but I feel like she should realize that they're fine with all of it.
