I fuckin' loved that book! It's probably one of three Dear America books that I ever really loved, and I totally second the tearing up... That whole story was one big inspiration to me-- working hard, doing something really hard that you don't really want to do, but you have to anyway, keeping hope and keeping faith, following your heart, and then you'll get rewarded for that. Her last entry made me cry.

...I feel like such a loser now...

I'm 25 now and I still love that series. My favorites are Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie and The Winter of Red Snow. I've been looking into slowly collecting them so I can save them for my own daughter. More power to you, anon.

These were some of the most amazing books I've ever read. I remember the Titanic one moved me to tears and the Train Tracks Across America journalist one was my absolute favorite romance for years.

I loved these books as a girl! I had the princess ones too. :)

And yes, that one is definitely a tearjerker. :)

[identity profile] scornedsaint.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I ever read that one, but I still have about 20 other ones and reread them one summer and loved them just as much, if not more. There's so no shame in that.

Those books are amazing and no one should feel bad because they read them.

The end.

The Royal Diaries were pretty amazing, too.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved those! God, some of them were so disturbing and sad. D:

I loved those books! I still have a collection on my shelf - my favorite was one with a Jewish emigre to the US, I think.

I don't think I ever read that one, but several of the others moved me to tears and are mental list of books-to-reread-when-I-get-nostalgic. Don't feel bad for thinking it was a good book; almost all the Dear America novels are!

[identity profile] beaksy13.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE these books! They have just re-released the series, but the new covers are awful! I much prefer the old covers like the one in your secret.

Those were some of my favorite books!!

[identity profile] oaktree89.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I remember those! I had like a zillion when I was 10 or so. I loved the one about the Titanic... so sad.

[identity profile] humoresques.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE THOSE BOOKS! :D

[identity profile] becksreid72.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit. My childhood.

I. Loved. Those. Books. I'm Canadian, so I mostly read the Dear Canada books, but I did read a couple Dear America ones I picked up in the local library. The Dear America about the sinking of the Titanic was really good. Dear Canada: A Prairie As Wide as the Sea was always my favourite. Man, I really used to love those books. Oh, hell. I still love those books. My collection is still sitting on my shelf and I do still occasionally devour them. They're just that good.

I feel like I'm in fourth grade all over again! :'D

I haven't read that one! But I do remember the Oregon Trail one and a WWII one and probably countless others. Now I want to read them again, haha...

[identity profile] imshort123.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I LOVE that book and the entire series! Though I must admit, that book has ruined my expectations in the romance department because I feel like I'm waiting for someone whose kisses will plant my feet to the ground like her love interest's

slightly ot

Dang it, I remember a book series with covers like this one, but it wasn't Dear America. Might've been the same publisher, though. One was about a princess/queen in Africa? I WISH I KNEW THE NAME OF IT. I'VE BEEN WONDERING FOR YEARS. :(

Lawd, I loved these and the royal diaries ones. I now want to go through and reread them (I hope I still have them!) and read the ones I never did because I aged out of them.

[identity profile] generalstolas.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
This series was my shit back in 1999. I remember circling which ones I wanted in the scholastic book order form for my parents to buy me. I got a free quill pen with one of them.

The best was Standing in the Light. It's the one where some random girl got kidnapped by Native Americans, and had to deal with all the struggles of learning a new language, being separated from her family, not knowing if her little brother was dead, and what not. And after living with them for a year or so, and finally accepting their culture, the Indians are attacked! D: And she lives 'cause the people realize she's the girl that's been missing for a year. And the one guy I shipped her with, the dude with the bird tattooed on his cheek, died.

I REMEMBER SOBBING FOR HOURS. THAT BOOK WAS SUCH AN EMOTIONAL TRAIN WRECK FOR MY LITTLE 5TH GRADE MIND.

...I think I have this on VHS somewhere, because they made a few into a miniseries.

Why did the fact that they were popular with the girls of your class stop you from reading them?

Ah! I remember that book! I don't remember it very well aside from a few details, but I remember it was one of my favorites.

I loved all those books. Still have a few of them.

Dude, don't fucking worry if it's supposed to be for younger readers. I still read "The Phantom Tollbooth" and would put it on my all time favorite book list in a nanosecond (along with more "adult" books). Plus, I still check out kid's/YA books to read for fun.

Enjoy that book/series if you find it to really connect with you emotionally. :)

[identity profile] rachelleneveu.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
ARE YOU ME? BECAUSE SERIOUSLY, THIS BOOK IS ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES AND I AM SO HAPPY TO SEE A SECRET ABOUT IT. THANK YOU, ANON.

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an amazing and super powerful book, no matter how old I get I don't think I'll ever stop being moved by it. I can't believe it' part of a kid's series, really. It reads like an adult novel. reading it I just want to step in and be her mom :.:
