anon, risking my neck, it looks like...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes. I guess I didn't think I'd get attacked over this...

Well, first, since so many people are telling me how awful a person I am, I'd like to point out I said that it was "part of the reason" we broke up. A whole huge slew of other things contributed to it, like the fact that I just don't love him. And, yeah, I'm ready for more attacks, I guess. But please don't comment on the state of my relationship that you have no idea about. In any case, this was a minor incident and the way he treated me when I mentioned my thoughts on Warren really hurt me. Being told that he basically doesn't care what I think? Hurt.

So here's what I think, for those of you genuinely interested and those of you looking for more hate alike: I think back to the first episode Warren was in, I Was Made To Love You, when Tara commented that you must have to be such a lonely person to have to create someone to love you. What made Warren the way he is? I doubt he just woke up one day and said, "You know what? I'm going to hate real hard on women from here on out." I find him very sad. I agree with Tara there; how lonely do you have to be to need to make a companion for yourself? (Adding to this real quick: I find it especially sad that Warren was responsible for the death of the only Scooby who probably had the capacity to offer him a hand and not condemn him.)

And I know what you're thinking: "Anon, stfu, she was a sex toy." Warren straight up tells us that April was more than just that. That she was a friend. He wanted, just like most people, to love and be loved--and, yes, he did go about it in a rather childish way and it was pretty fucked up when he abandoned her. The sympathizing, though, comes from that loneliness thing. And what I think must have started out as a desire to be loved. I just find it so sad, that's all.

Of course, that desire became twisted and mangled due to Warren't choices. Adam Busch commented on the character once, saying that Warren is always given the chance to do good, and yet he constantly makes the wrong choice. I think he's interesting because he is seriously smart enough to know the possible outcomes of his choices. I mean, he's a qualified genius, you can't dismiss that. So why does he always decide to do what he knows has such a good chance of fucking him over? He just isn't that stupid. And he keeps trying.

Yes, I know he goes over the edge. I watched the show. And I know he's an awful person. I never said I agree with the things he believes and think that it's super awesome he's a misogynist. I'm a girl, I do find the way he acts towards women straight-up disgusting and offensive. I never once said in that secret "Yay, misogyny! :D" Dumb. Although I guess I can understand how someone would assume that. Just... don't.

So... yeah. Basically, that's what I wanted to tell my boyfriend, and to have a serious discussion about the character and his psychology, and he just shook his head and refused to listen. Imagine a child throwing a fit. It was silly. I guess I'll answer any other questions someone has? Just, why do you have to be so quick to jump on the elehater?

...and this is ridiculously long. I'm sorry.

That's fair enough.

That makes sense. I'm not into Warren as I actually find him a little boring (though your interpretation is interesting), but especially there's no reason for your boyfriend to completely off-the-bat refuse to listen to your opinion.

Yeah, but... didn't Warren make the sexbot because he broke up with a real girl? Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I thought she dumped him to the curb and he was like "I want a perfect girl all to myself." Rather than trying to patch what he'd had with the "normal" girl, he decided to craft one wholly for himself. What is there to sympathize with there? He was lonely because he was a prick.

Your ex refusing to even listen to your reasoning is pretty childish, though.

Other way around. He abandoned sexbot April because he found a real girl who was into him. From what we're given, April was his first... girlfriend. If you can really call her that.

Oh, my bad, it's been a few months since I watched that. Ignore my previous comment then, haha.

Actually, he abandoned the bot because he found a real girlfriend. I think it's still pretty telling that he built the bot in the first place rather that putting that same effort into building and maintaining a relationship with a real person, but in his first appearance Warren's not a bastard so much as he is incredibly irresponsible and emotionally clueless.

That's still a dumb reason to break up with someone. And if it was only part of the reason, then why was it a big enough deal to post here?

Besides, he was a misogynist from the very first episode we encounter him, it wasn't a slow descent by any means. He did more horrible things as time went on because he finally had the power to do them. His desire to control women is present from day one.

To be fair, I'd shake my head and refuse to listen if someone wanted to have a serious discussion about the psychological evidence that backed up their belief that Josef Fritzl was just a sympathetic, lonely and misunderstood guy.

Well, sure. That's real-life shit with real-life shitty consequences on the lives of real-life people. It's miles away from a theoretical discussion about a fictional character.

Having a civilized debate with your partner is okay.

Having your opinions invalidated completely by your partner is not.

I never thought you were a bad person. I always just took Adam's reasons as really reaching for ways to sympathize and properly play a character like Warren. Which isn't bad, it rounded out the character and seems to have worked well for him. Almost became sad when he became barbecue at the end of the season.

Sorry, I just finished at the gym and I can't stop thinking about meat.

These things that happen to people, though! At some point you must say, "is it worth trying to redeem this thing?" You can look at the other side, but some go through such things and do not become this way. So you must ask: "is it really all environment?"

He is a sociopath. He would have been one whether bad things happened to him or not. He would have treated others poorly whether bad things happened to him or not. Really it's about levels. He might not have gone as far. But he'd still be shitty.

Huh.

Huh.

I can honestly say that I've never given his character this much thought before. I'll probably never sympathize with him, but... I'm going to have to go back and rewatch his episodes.

Thanks for giving me something to think about, OP.

I give you BIG points for explaining your POV. Warren was a complex character, I didn't like him, but I can certainly see what you're saying. It's an interesting take on him and I hope you find someone who allows you to express awesome views even if they don't agree with them.

You go, OP!!
