I'd be more concerned about why you sympathize with a misogynist and fucked up asshole like Warren. If you like the character that's fine, but seriously, he's even more fucked up than some of the actual monsters Buffy faced.

If this was part of the reason you actually broke up it sounds like your relationship was dead in the water already.

[identity profile] myonlylight.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Umm. Why do you sympathize with Warren? I am genuinely curious.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That is the stupidest reason I've ever heard for breaking up with someone, but I guess he's better off without someone like you.

Personally, I'd be kinda worried if my boyfriend DID sympathize with an awful, misogynistic rapist like Warren.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you sympathize with Warren of all people?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Your boyfriend is better off without you.

[identity profile] archerstar.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
A misogynist rapist who got off on murdering women.

Right. Well.

Hm.

[identity profile] princessgos.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. Of course, I'm still trying to figure out why anyone sympathizes with Jonathan. From his first appearance, lugging the sniper rifle up to the tower, through his manipulating reality, through his complicity in Evil Warren's schemes, I thought he was a detesable choad.

Putting aside that fact that you're sympathizing with a rapist and murderer, are you really so stubborn that you can't handle people disagreeing with your views?

[identity profile] skelody.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't think that can really be put aside. For example, I am so stubborn that I can't handle people disagreeing with my views that people ought not rape or murder other people.

On top of everything things, Warren is also a complete dumbass.

He makes amazing technology that could change the world. He could make TRILLIONS off the patents alone, and what does he use his inventions for? Crime and misogyny.

It's like inventing the cure for cancer and keeping it to yourself because you want to take up smoking.

I really hope this is a troll.

Warren is the least sympathetic character in the entire series, and given the atrocities commited by villans on a weekly basis for 7 years that's saying something.

[identity profile] courageousyouth.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
...can you explain these theories?

Is that...well, how big of a part? Because...well, I guess it's your relationship, you know better. (To me he's still the guy from "The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo." I don't even know.)

[identity profile] complete-lie.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Those had better be some damn good theories.

anon, risking my neck, it looks like...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yikes. I guess I didn't think I'd get attacked over this...

Well, first, since so many people are telling me how awful a person I am, I'd like to point out I said that it was "part of the reason" we broke up. A whole huge slew of other things contributed to it, like the fact that I just don't love him. And, yeah, I'm ready for more attacks, I guess. But please don't comment on the state of my relationship that you have no idea about. In any case, this was a minor incident and the way he treated me when I mentioned my thoughts on Warren really hurt me. Being told that he basically doesn't care what I think? Hurt.

So here's what I think, for those of you genuinely interested and those of you looking for more hate alike: I think back to the first episode Warren was in, I Was Made To Love You, when Tara commented that you must have to be such a lonely person to have to create someone to love you. What made Warren the way he is? I doubt he just woke up one day and said, "You know what? I'm going to hate real hard on women from here on out." I find him very sad. I agree with Tara there; how lonely do you have to be to need to make a companion for yourself? (Adding to this real quick: I find it especially sad that Warren was responsible for the death of the only Scooby who probably had the capacity to offer him a hand and not condemn him.)

And I know what you're thinking: "Anon, stfu, she was a sex toy." Warren straight up tells us that April was more than just that. That she was a friend. He wanted, just like most people, to love and be loved--and, yes, he did go about it in a rather childish way and it was pretty fucked up when he abandoned her. The sympathizing, though, comes from that loneliness thing. And what I think must have started out as a desire to be loved. I just find it so sad, that's all.

Of course, that desire became twisted and mangled due to Warren't choices. Adam Busch commented on the character once, saying that Warren is always given the chance to do good, and yet he constantly makes the wrong choice. I think he's interesting because he is seriously smart enough to know the possible outcomes of his choices. I mean, he's a qualified genius, you can't dismiss that. So why does he always decide to do what he knows has such a good chance of fucking him over? He just isn't that stupid. And he keeps trying.

Yes, I know he goes over the edge. I watched the show. And I know he's an awful person. I never said I agree with the things he believes and think that it's super awesome he's a misogynist. I'm a girl, I do find the way he acts towards women straight-up disgusting and offensive. I never once said in that secret "Yay, misogyny! :D" Dumb. Although I guess I can understand how someone would assume that. Just... don't.

So... yeah. Basically, that's what I wanted to tell my boyfriend, and to have a serious discussion about the character and his psychology, and he just shook his head and refused to listen. Imagine a child throwing a fit. It was silly. I guess I'll answer any other questions someone has? Just, why do you have to be so quick to jump on the elehater?

...and this is ridiculously long. I'm sorry.

Warren? Seriously? No.

[identity profile] shishiomaru.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't say that I sympathize with Warren, but I do think he was a far more complex character than most fans seem to give him credit for. It was obvious from his introduction that he's incredibly emotionally immature, and had been bullied and marginalized by his peers; what he ends up becoming is in no way excused by this, but I can totally see how he got to that point, you know?

The way I look at it, what he wanted was to be acknowledged, and when he had the power to force people to do so, everything went to hell. To me, the thing that really made him a villain was his refusal to admit what he'd done was wrong. He's the "Nice Guy" and "Man Child" tropes taken to their darkest extreme, and I found him fascinating. Reprehensible, yes, but fascinating.

[identity profile] cypherwulf.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I could be with someone that sympathizes with a misogynist murderer/rapist.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it hilarious that so many commenters here are bagging out the
OP for sympathizing with a FICTIONAL misogynist/rapist, even though they probably fap to mass-murdering villains with pretty faces.

Funny how fandom works. It's ok to sympathise --even sexualize-- a bad guy...just as long as they aren't sexist and have a nice face.

I somehow doubt that was the only reason. Anyway, I hope you move on better than he did, because while Warren may have had some feelings for Katrina, the way he went about it was completely violating and selfish. He didn't care about her feelings, only his own. You could assume this was because of some spoiled upbringing, but we never really know. For whatever reasons, I would say he started off feeling confused about how to express his feelings, then was pushed over the edge as he felt entitled to Katrina's life and was repeatedly (rightfully) denied by her. Then he went and got his friends to try to frame Buffy for her murder, which is another all kinds of world of wrong...

[identity profile] 21lights.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
You sympathize with Warren? How could you sympathize with that monster? Andrew and Jonathan, okay that's more understandable, but Warren? No.

I'm as surprised as the OP-

(Anonymous) 2011-04-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
-I didn't think there was going to be such epic backlash here. Warren is legitimately one of my favorite characters. Mostly it's because I find his character interesting [and liking a character =/= sharing a character's views, by the by], but partially because I do sympathize with him. To a degree. I can recognize how he is a very human character, despite doing inhuman things. He was a deeply shallow person, to near sociopathy, but still did desire love. In any way he could get it, which is a feeling a lot of people can relate to. Sure, he had the means and the moral depravity to do what he did [build a girlfriend/sex-bot, hypnotize Katrina into this master/slave parody of their former relationship], but he was still reaching out to something unattainable, even if he lacked the respect and temperament to really function in a relationship. Warren did not intend to kill Katrina- he speaks about her with love and sincerity to Buffy the first time they meet, and it's very clear that he is still enamored of her in "Dead Things". But now it's really clear that he can separate love from ownership. He was as panicked as the other two when she attempted escape, and he definitely hit her in a murderous rage, but- seriously. Yes, he's a murderer, yes, he's a rapist. But he was also a social outcast, bullied and rejected and truly twisted in the end. I really think Season 6 shows a slow progression of corruption with Warren. It was in him to be cruel, but as soon as he asserted his dominance over the Trio [they started out arguing for leadership], and finally he was in charge of something and it was about time, etc. I've known kids like him, who maybe didn't turn out to be rapists, but became cynical, sarcastic know-it-alls, scrabbling for higher ground in every confrontation. He's pathetic, and ignorant. But much like a nice kid like Jonathan at least had a hand in some bad things, Warren did not have someone like Buffy to at least have someone send him in the right direction.

Jane Espenson said in an interview [and forgive me if this was already mentioned], that Warren's explanation of why he made and abandoned April is supposed to be a reflection of Buffy's relationship with Riley, and in that scene she was relating to him. Like, she sought out Riley as a replacement for love, but while outwardly perfect she couldn't really love him. Buffy's not some saint in the end, but I think that says -something-, about what they were trying to say about Warren. Even that Warren sought a girl with imperfections, like being admittedly a little bitchy and eccentric, I find that an indication of what kind of character he was supposed to be.

When Warren first starts losing his mind over things, like lashing out at Willow moments before his death, it seems that he wasn't always such a twitchy lunatic. Like this was a set-in. Bullying and emotional neglect or what-have-you are not grounds for the crimes he committed. But they can be. He was just a bad bad kid.

And I'm not gonna get into Season 8. Except to point out that despite an attempted Willow-lobotomy, his last big hoo-rah before dissolving was to protect Andrew.
