"I wish I were an anime fan, just to have a continuous source of new canon."

Anime is not a genre, it's a medium. Not all "anime fans" like everything ever that was done in this medium. If you're not a fan of a current series you don't have a "continuous source of new canon".

re: S/R

I really wish some of the old writers still stuck around. It depresses me that even accio_rs_fics is getting quiet. (ditto for Inception; I don't even read much fic anymore because I can't remember if writers I like are still writing for the fandom).

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oi, canon-wise, anime fandoms work like tv shows with one, two seasons tops. Try 'successful videogame franchise', 'shonen manga' or, well, 'Star Wars' for what you're looking for. And good luck in finding it, seriously, whatever the medium :)

[identity profile] muneca-brava.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of get that. I am a huge R/S fan but I only got into them 2 years ago when the fandom had already mostly died out. They're my biggest OTP though and I think if it had been new when I discovered it I would have loved discussing it and getting to read new fic as it came out.

But, on the other hand, now there is this astonishing amount of absolutely amazing fic out there already to just dive into so I don't complain too much. And I don't think fandoms that have new canon all the time are all that great either.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Most Anime fandoms die fast, actually.

Television fandoms could be your answer.

Not that I'm in any since I don't actually watch TV, but the ones I have experience with tend to be pretty stable, especially with on-going long-runners.

[identity profile] kaasen.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
IS THAT FUCKING SHOEBOX PROJECT?!

:O

[identity profile] skew-whiff.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. If not anime, maybe superhero comics? Fandom sizes vary, but even when there's not a big fandom, there's often decades worth of canon to get stuck into.

And yeah, I do wish the Pacific fandom was a little larger. There's so much fic potential and so few actual writers. (Though, hey, do stick around. There may not be many folks, but the ones that there are are pretty cool.)

To witness the tail-end of any fandom is tough. I've always, always hated it.

It didn't matter when I got into it, how active I was and how long my involvement lasted, seeing it end, knowing it would end soon was always terrible.

You usually can tell the signs - less long-ass WIPs, less frequent updates, people using icons for other fandoms, spend more time talking about other fandoms in their journals etc. It makes you nostalgic and ready to quit before it's even over.

But you know what's worse?

When you're fan of a canon that is still on-going and it starts to suck so much that you cannot be a fan anymore. That happens more often than not with any sort of serialized fiction - anime, book series, tv series.

Catching the tail-end is better than having to leave the party early because the party starts to suck.

As for the fandoms that are too small to ever go anywhere... this is the rule, really. For everything. Most fiction never goes anywhere near having a sustainable fandom.

[identity profile] puddinchan.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should search around websites with lots of videos of TV stuff/whatever and see what you like. Although that depends on your genre, too.

For instance, maybe get into Doctor Who; that's pretty popular and has a continually growing amount of episodes. The new series is debuting soon, and I would personally recommend it.

[identity profile] nereyd.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoebox love!

At least with HP, there fandom is/was so humongous that not only are there still people out there talking about it. And yeah, there is a massive amount of outdated fics and WIP, but there's also tons and tons of really awesome fic to read.

HP fandom is still active in places! So come check out [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]! Over there we're rereading the series (about to start DH), and having discussion still. Or Mark Reads (http://www.markreads.net), who basically liveblogged his reading of the series for the first time and is now rereading, along with other people on his site.

I feel you about Inception, but movie fandoms generally don't last long. I agree with the poster above me that suggested TV shows. New canon most every week!

Good luck finding something you can love that you can really participate in!

Cry me a river; your point?

Anime is so goddamned overrated, pick something else to blindly idolize.

Kind of stupid secret.

[identity profile] piepeloe.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought I recognized R/S art. I hadn't had this problem in a while, but wow do I feel you on that one. I only just finished reading HP for the first time. I'd love to have some discussions, more fic. A problem with the general HP fandom is that it's so huge. I don't have the feeling there are really any major centralized comms everyone hangs out at. I definitely don't feel it for the R/S fandom. There aren't a lot of comms for that ship, they still get a fair few posts, but somehow they feel neglected.

I hope it kind of flares up again for the final movie. I've also noticed that smaller fandoms manage to keep their comms active by having open threads every day/week/whenever to discuss their fandom or just random stuff.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Anime series don't last forever either. Even popular anime fandoms die after a while after the series ends. There is no "continuous source for new canon", as soon as something ends, there's no more new canon.

If you want a fandom that's very active just try something that's ongoing and popular, be it tv show, anime series, or anything else.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it happens to anime fandoms, too - all three of mine are pretty quiet, although none of them are actually dead.

And no fandom is ever truly dead if even one fan still believes in it. Look at what's just happened with the TRON fandom!

If you want a forever-fandom and can't deal with the long tails, try Transformers, Trek, or Who.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, there's lots of great Pacific fic out there! (SLEDGE/SNAFU, YOU ARE MY HEART FOREVER.) Maybe not tons, but there's some good shit! Check out Tumblr; there are some epic fans there. Overall, though, I do know what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
To the people that think this is a stupid secret, congrats you must belong to some unknown unfinished forever ongoing fandom.

It's funny I never experienced this because I've been in HP forever and it's still going (slightly slowing but overall very robust, like dude srsly join H/D OTP and just filled with awesome fics/fests).

Jumped onto inception right about now and it's great because there's so many new fics to read. Sucks cause all the BNF are over it and into Hawaii Five-O (Do not watch and don't bloody care, gimme A/E dammit).

As for anime fandoms, well unless you're in Naruto or Bleach or something it ends. And if you've seen what happens to canon there it's definitely in the wtf is going on canon don't recognise all these new characters.

Haha anon, if you want a fandom that constantly supplies new canon then read Homestuck.

We get daily updates and the comic is not ending for a while.

[identity profile] courageousyouth.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have the bad luck of getting into fandoms after they're already dead, or ones that never really existed in the first place, so I sympathize, anon. It's frustrating.

[identity profile] lovedforaday.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Follow soap operas.

Oh, oops. Soaps are on their way out, too. At least the USA ones are. Maybe try a European soap, I hear they are still really popular.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
this is sort of unrelated but I finished Shoebox Project last month and OH MAN I LOVED IT

sorry

I guess I needed to say that somewhere

(I'm always late to the party in fandom too, by the way)

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Your description of the Inception fandom is one of the most brilliant things I've seen, thank you. AND SHOEBOX PROJECT LOVE. <3 It upsets me more than it should that it'll never be completed.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
IA. Although I wasn't late to HP (ffs WHEN WILL SBP BE UPDATED?????), I don't even bother getting properly into Inception. It bores me to death and new ppl are treated like sh!t. It's all pr0n anyway. I hope Inception fandom dies out soon.
