Don't let it get to you.

I don't. :3

*hugs* Don't let it get to you, anon. I know exactly how you feel - I go through this far too often myself. Just keep trucking, and make good friends in your fandoms. :)

I've found that in the dying/never really was alive fandoms I'm in a good friend is worth more than a thousand comments.

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask "Are you me?" to the OP, but... are you me, dear sir or madam? XD Quoted on all accounts!

<3 It's all about the love.

you are worrying waaaay too much ):

tbh comment counts are the result of equal parts timing and luck as they are conceived 'talent'.

*perceived wow word fail much

I'd like to point out to you that what is good =/= what is popular in a lot of things, fandom included, fandom especially.

comments can be indicative of a baseline of knowledge -- grammar and sentence structure good enough to stay off snarky grammar nazi and sporking comms. Beyond that, it really depends on the fandom you're in. In some fandoms playing to a popular pairing is all your need.

Some of the best fic I ever read wasn't very popular or known.

Feel free to judge how well you appeal to an audience with fic (which is really what you should be looking at if you want to get published as well) but beyond that...*shrug* I wouldn't say popular=good.

Whether people notice your work isn't up to you to control.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say that's exactly true. having the right friends, being in the right circles, posting at the right time, and playing up to fandom preferences is all in your control.

it has very little to do with talent, of course.

[identity profile] lesbido.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
playing up to fandom preferences

isn't really static though

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
My suggestion? Just write one or two fics for something popular, see the feedback that you get from that.

It's hard to tell if lack of feedback is coming from bad writing, or just the fact that your fandom/pairing isn't all that popular so nobody's reading it.

Also, if you really dislike popular pairings, my suggestion would be to write a pairing that's so "huh?" that it'll have people clicking on it just to see how the pairing's done, because it's so "what even?" that they can't resist. I've gotten into so many pairings that way, because I was so intrigued by the concept of those two characters being together that I decided to read their fic.

Are you promoting well enough? Sometimes people just can't find these things.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Small/inactive fandoms just don't get a lot of concrit feedback, especially if (oddly enough) you're writing for the most popular pairing in a very small or very slow fandom - your comments will be mostly squee that the fic exists at all. For gen!fic or rarepairs, getting no feedback at all isn't uncommon, even if you're getting pagehits. So it might not be anything about you or your writing if you're in a mostly-dead fandom.

IMO, the best way to get reviews is to give them. And you only get as good as you give; if all you ever say is 'I like this' then that's the most you receive in return. Giving intelligent-sounding reviews is really the best promotion there is out there.

[identity profile] badass-tiger.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Writing for an inactive fandom might be your only problem. I write for unpopular pairings all the time so I don't get a lot of comments, but when I do occasionally write for a popular pairing or character, I usually get good feedback. I've found that if you think you're good, and you have good reasons, then you usually are good.

[identity profile] tasmat.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be your beta! D8 DON'T BE ALONE, OP!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Like others above said; different fandoms have different pet pairings and genres. In some fandoms, introspective fics are all the rage, in other it's horror, in yet (most, actually) others it's romance, in others humor, etc.

And if you're writing about minor or unpopular side-characters you probably won't attract attention at all even if your fic is incredibly well-written.

It all depends on what the fan favorites are, how old, active and large is the fandom, your ability to promote yourself and your story, and even the day and hour you post/update (especially true in the larger fandoms). Good, or even excellent, writing doesn't guarantee hits/reviews.

The suggestions above have it right; try popular or truly outrageous pairings and promote yourself by leaving good, insightful reviews.

[identity profile] sarren.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot emphasise enough the importance of a good beta. Don't be precious about your writing. Find someone who will rip your story apart if necessary to make it better, who doesn't let you get away with just posting it after one rewrite because you're sick of it. I've finally found someone like this and it has improved my writing out of sight. She once made me rewrite a story three times. I was sick as fuck of the whole thing but she was right and it ended up one of the stories I'm most proud of.

And I suggest posting on Archive of our Own, if you don't already. It's where all the people I know go to find rare fandoms. Sadly, the rare fandoms will never get a lot of comments because not many people will read them, but hell, those few will be grateful as hell you wrote fic for them!
