There's a lot of faults in this show but the heart of it--the relationship between Sam and Dean--is one of the best I've seen.

Think about it: how many other shows explore the complexities of a relationship that isn't romantic or sexual?

I have no problem with Wincest in fandom (heck, I like it all: gen, het, wincest, slash--bring it), but we're not talking about fandom here. I just think it's amazing that a show has lasted this long when it's not really about supernatural things but rather about family.

This. This is exactly why I love SPN.

But but but Dean's a sexist that hates women unless they put out for him, and talks about killing whores :(

(Anonymous) 2011-04-09 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And Sam's just...boring. Like instant plain oatmeal boring.

[identity profile] ahmnomnom.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
does he have to be plain oatmeal? can he be cinnamon-apple?

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
He should be instant maple and ginger. That way he can drive Yeerks insane.

It was one single, specific whore (of Babylon) and she needed killing. Let's not over-generalize here.

I've seen this argument a lot and it makes no sense to me. There are plenty of shows that explore non-romantic relationships. Sometimes in addition to romantic ones, but it's not like there are literally no other shows on television with a focus on developed family or friendly relationships.

Off the top of my head: Modern Family, Mad Men, United States of Tara, Cougar Town, Psych, and Community all have interesting, complex family relationships or pseudo-family relationships at their hearts. Even Grey's Anatomy has the amazing friendship that is Meredith and Cristina, and The Vampire Diaries goes into 'the meaning of family and friendship' like every week.

And if you want older stuff there's Buffy, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, The West Wing, Arrested Development, Due South... The list goes on. There are many, many shows that focus on families or intense friendships and have complex relationships between characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
The other shows are all lacking hawt two brothers potentially getting it on DUH

(I don't really get this argument either. In fact, SPN fandom's arguments for anything "deep" in the show make me roll my eyes so hard. Though I shouldn't be hatin', I guess SPN just isn't my cup of tea.)

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I personally loathe Supernatural, but like... if you like it, whatever, I guess, but to claim it's got some quality that no other show has because it focuses on family just makes me think you haven't actually seen much other TV.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I wanted to say "You mustn't have seen that much TV if you think a complex non-sexual relationship is anything new," but I wanted to be nice :X

In any case, orginal or not, to me SPN still fails at the relationship so whatev.

+1

(Anonymous) 2011-04-10 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. And even when there is a romantic relationship, rarely is it the SOLE relationship, or even the one that gets the complete center of attention, unless you're watching a romcom or something. Even soap operas devote quite a bit of time to familial drama. Even Friends! Even at the height of the Ross-Rachel willtheywon'tthey madness didn't neglect the friendships between the rest of the cast.

SPN fans: SPN did not invent fictional portrayals of brotherly love.

Oh, there's another one, Brotherly Love.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well for me the difference is that all the examples you listed are ensemble shows (admittedly Supernatural expanded in the later seasons) that do have romantic relationships prominently featured.

Initially Supernatural had, basically two characters. Their relationship is the focus.

You are never going to be able to sell the idea that two white males bonding as a focal point in fiction is new. Ever.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I would say most of the shows I listed include romantic relationships, but the romance is not the most prominent aspect of any of them except Grey's and TVD. All of them focus most primarily on the non-romantic relationships between the characters. Most of them are almost entirely about those relationships.

Due South is not an ensemble show, and while Psych is more of one now, I don't think the first two or three seasons really are.

But, like, yes, if what you actually mean is "Supernatural was the only show on the air for a while to literally feature a single brotherly relationship and nothing else at all," then sure. But I've seen the actual question "how many other shows explore the complexities of a relationship that isn't romantic or sexual?" in relation to Supernatural many times over the years and the answer is, um, a lot.

I've only seen a few episodes but in all those episodes there was a chick that Dean wanted to bone, and it was kind of prominent in the episode plot. So.

You should ask your dad what he watched as a kid. Lone Ranger? Dukes of Hazard? Batman???? Starsky and Hutch? Two Guys with Special Guest Chick of the Week is not unique.

[identity profile] miss-kate18.livejournal.com 2011-04-10 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree.
I watched all of seasons 1 and 2 but have dropped off a bit recently. But yeah, there are much better shows if you want pure sci-fi (The X Files in particular), but the family aspect of Supernatural is appealing.
Perhaps it's because I miss being that close to my little sister, but I like Sam and Dean's relationship.

Re: ...

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2011-04-11 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I never said that Supernatural was the only show to focus on family/nonromantic relationships but rather that I can't think of another show where the primary focus is on siblings and their dysfunction--and it's not a comedy. I'll admit when I think of Supernatural I tend to focus on the beginning, where it was a show about isolation.
