So. Since there aren't any particularly interesting secrets, let's have some sort of discussion. What fandoms (books/movies/video games) do you recommend for people to check out?

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nabari no Ou (the manga, not the anime) is something I will always recommend. And the author's new work, Shounen Note, is great too, whenever it gets scanlated.

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Nabari no Ou T^T **goes in a corner and cries** I got to about chapter 50 and I couldn't go on. I'd started crying at around chapter 15, and oooh, it's just so sad!

What's Shounen Note about?

[identity profile] radio-nurse.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You should keep reading! It does have a good ending, in my opinion. : )

Shounen Note is about a bunch of junior high kids in a choir, specifically one boy whose voice hasn't changed and still sings soprano. It's really lovely, although only a few chapters are out so far.

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
late reply is late orz

I squee'd when I read "choir" *is a choir nerd* =D It sounds awesome, but I'm just wondering if it's a oneshot, like it said on MangaUpdates, or still ongoing. Where can I find the scanlations?

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Um hmm well my favorite books/movies/things at the moment are...

-Tron, and Tron: Legacy, because I love Jeff Bridges and watched the original when I was quite young and I'm apparently a huge geek

-All Shakespeare plays, pointedly Hamlet and uh Julius Caesar and Measure For Measure because I just read those last two and Hamlet is my favorite play ever

-the Mortal Engines quartet, by Phillip Reeve! I'm something like halfway through the first book and it's delightful. I'm not sure I like everything about it-- kinda clunky writing, imo-- but my golly gosh, it's a book about giant moving cities that eat each other! How is that not lovely?

-Diana Wynne Jones in general. Her work doesn't suit everyone's tastes, but I've liked it since I was quite small. Sprawling fantasies, mostly, with quiet wit and lively characters.

-Tamora Pierce in general. Some of her storytelling decisions are not my favorite! Amazing female characters, though, and beautiful worldbuilding, and magic, and adventures. I just... I just love her, man. <3

and I know this is wishful thinking but.

I wish there was fandom for classic lit, like, the Illiad. I would write so much fanfic for the Illiad, and Beowulf, and La Commedia. Just think of the shipping opportunities!

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'll check into these!

I would write so much fanfic for the Illiad, and Beowulf, and La Commedia

If you write it, I would totes read it.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You're very welcome. It's just a few things that I've been enjoying lately xD

And that is good to know. If I ever did write it, the ensuing fanfic would be full of really dramatic love triangles and I would shiptease everywhere in a futile attempt to start shipwars over really, really old literature.

That would be the best.

[identity profile] fox-bourne.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
<3 Diana Wynne Jones

I was heartbroken when I heard she passed away. I spent a few months reading nothing but her books when I was younger.

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry to butt in and totally ignore the entire rest of the discussion, but your mention of the Illiad... is there some kind of Greek mythology/Roman mythology fandom? Because I would get involved in such a fandom in a heartbeat, lack of time to dedicate to the internet be damned!

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I DON'T KNOW BUT IF THERE IS SUCH A THING, I REALLY WANT TO BE PART OF IT.

I've been slashing up my picture book of Greek myths since I was five l-lol

I don't know if it's still there, but fanfiction.net used to have a mythology section somewhere.

[livejournal.com profile] _thousandships! Iliad, Aeneid and general Greco-Roman myth fic! ...not the most active comm in the world, but the work is usually pretty good. :-)

There is! There is!

Mythology fandom is my absolute favourite thing in the whole universe. /heavily enthused mythos writer/RPer at your service

OMFG MORTAL ENGINES!!!!!!
Hmm yeah so those books are pretty much the most amazing underrated works of fiction ever. Not to spoil, but yeah while the writing is a bit clunky and the third book gets a little slow, all of them are setting up for one of the greatest conclusions ever and awes. So much love for those books. Also Hester is amazing throughout.

Tamora Pierce is kind of hit or miss with me but goddamn do I love Mel.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god upon finishing the first book last night(apparently I was further than I thought) and not wanting to spoil anything, wow. I was not expecting any of that! I'm excited to track down the next ones, though they're a bit hard to find. Also yes, Hester is my favorite.

I've got massive nostalgia goggles on re: Tamora Pierce, so I can't help but love a lot of her stories. I never really got into the Protector of the Small series, and uh I did not particularly enjoy Melting Stones, or Bloodhound. Ugh Bloodhound I. Wughh. I didn't like it much, to say the least. Those are the only ones I can recall really not digging!

Good Omens has cropped up here a couple times, but I'm gonna put that out here anyway.

And if you like manga, "Not Love but Delicious Foods Make Me So Happy" is fun for foodies. :D

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
How about TV shows? There's quite a few being released this month that are awesome.

Camelot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eb-EBdwRtk) is another adaptation of the King Arthur story, but they're doing quite a few new/original things with it. It's a much darker take on the story, I think, and so far there's a lot of focus on character-driven drama. (A+) There's certainly a fair share of action and sex, though -- it's by Starz, after all, haha. I think it's a show that appeals to a lot of different tastes, as a result. Really, though, it's worth watching just for the cast. Eva Green plays a HBIC Morgan and Joseph Fiennes plays a gloriously creepy Merlin. I pretty much adore it.

And if you're a Merlin fan, I beg you to give it a chance. :/ I'm tired of seeing Merlin fans getting all butthurt because the show isn't... exactly like Merlin. It's possible to like both shows, guys.

The Borgias (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58hmD2sGV7Q) is a series covering the lives of the famous Borgia family, focusing mainly on Cesare Borgia. Definitely recommended if you're an Assassin's Creed fan, as the atmosphere in the show is very similar. Also recommended if you're a fan of The Tudors. I think people might get turned off from this show because it's "slow" or "boring" -- so far there's a lot of politics and character drama, and not a lot of action. Trust me -- that'll change!

Game of Thrones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PxLidxnAE8) is... I can't even describe this series without freaking out in excitement. Guys, if you watch any of the shows I'm recommending, watch this one. You don't need to have read the books beforehand, although I suggest that too. But seriously, this show is going to be amazing. So amazing. Have another trailer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpJYNVhGf1s)

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I'll look into those. /adds to to-do list

I watched the trailer for The Borgias, and the I was won over by the Within Temptation music. It won me over. I'll have to watch.

[identity profile] darlas-mom.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Is "Camelot" improving? I only tried the first two episodes. The writing/acting/directing is all okay, but it kind of skeeves me out a little, the way it portrays women. (Morgan calls Igraine out on standing idly by while Uther was an asshole, and Igraine floats out "A queen doesn't question her king!" Um. She's a perpetual victim. WTF?)

I really want to love it, because I want to love every King Arthur re-imagining, but...it just made my skin crawl. :-(

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure how to answer that, since those things didn't really bother me, so I can't give you a good perspective. That said, I absolutely adored the first two episodes and strongly disliked the third because it's like the third episode went out of its way to make Arthur and Guinevere the most unlikable brats possible. So if you already disliked the first two, maybe the show isn't for you, haha. (And there's nothing wrong with that at all!)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a fandom for the Borgias yet? I've really been enjoying the show so far. (Camelot... not quite so much.)

[identity profile] chocobodork.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so excited for Game of Thrones. so exciiiiiiited

I don't know how I'm going to function between the time when it airs Sunday night and when I get to see it on Thursday. I'm just going to become even more of a zombie.

I'm playing Radiant Historia on the DS right now and I really enjoy it. That and Rune Factory 3 (I just finished Frontier on the Wii and I'm going to play 2 next -- I love this franchise)
