Um hmm well my favorite books/movies/things at the moment are...

-Tron, and Tron: Legacy, because I love Jeff Bridges and watched the original when I was quite young and I'm apparently a huge geek

-All Shakespeare plays, pointedly Hamlet and uh Julius Caesar and Measure For Measure because I just read those last two and Hamlet is my favorite play ever

-the Mortal Engines quartet, by Phillip Reeve! I'm something like halfway through the first book and it's delightful. I'm not sure I like everything about it-- kinda clunky writing, imo-- but my golly gosh, it's a book about giant moving cities that eat each other! How is that not lovely?

-Diana Wynne Jones in general. Her work doesn't suit everyone's tastes, but I've liked it since I was quite small. Sprawling fantasies, mostly, with quiet wit and lively characters.

-Tamora Pierce in general. Some of her storytelling decisions are not my favorite! Amazing female characters, though, and beautiful worldbuilding, and magic, and adventures. I just... I just love her, man. <3

and I know this is wishful thinking but.

I wish there was fandom for classic lit, like, the Illiad. I would write so much fanfic for the Illiad, and Beowulf, and La Commedia. Just think of the shipping opportunities!

Thank you! I'll check into these!

I would write so much fanfic for the Illiad, and Beowulf, and La Commedia

If you write it, I would totes read it.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You're very welcome. It's just a few things that I've been enjoying lately xD

And that is good to know. If I ever did write it, the ensuing fanfic would be full of really dramatic love triangles and I would shiptease everywhere in a futile attempt to start shipwars over really, really old literature.

That would be the best.

<3 Diana Wynne Jones

I was heartbroken when I heard she passed away. I spent a few months reading nothing but her books when I was younger.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I'm still pretty broken up about it. I mean, I never met Ms. Jones, and I don't know that we would have got along if we had, but her writing was a huge impact on my life as a child, and she's partly responsible for inspiring me to start making up my own stories.

So I've loved her since I was very little. I just hope that if I ever have children, or my brother does, that they don't mind receiving copious amounts of used Diana Wynne Jones novels every birthday.

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, I'm sorry to butt in and totally ignore the entire rest of the discussion, but your mention of the Illiad... is there some kind of Greek mythology/Roman mythology fandom? Because I would get involved in such a fandom in a heartbeat, lack of time to dedicate to the internet be damned!

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I DON'T KNOW BUT IF THERE IS SUCH A THING, I REALLY WANT TO BE PART OF IT.

I've been slashing up my picture book of Greek myths since I was five l-lol

C/Ping from above: [livejournal.com profile] _thousandships! Iliad, Aeneid and general Greco-Roman myth fic! ...not the most active comm in the world, but the work is usually pretty good. :-)

[identity profile] zelda-dragon.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's still there, but fanfiction.net used to have a mythology section somewhere.

GOODNESS GRACIOUS

THIS IS THE BEST

YOU ARE THE BEST

THANK YOU!!!

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
There is! There is!

Mythology fandom is my absolute favourite thing in the whole universe. /heavily enthused mythos writer/RPer at your service

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
^_^ - Greek/Roman mythology has always been a subject I've been slightly obsessed with, to the extent of excitedly telling people Greek myths while they stare at me blankly. I'm so glad there are other people who care about it!

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I do this too. I'm just lucky that most of my friends share a similar fixation, otherwise... it's hard to explain the house of Atreus to people who aren't expecting a long story about cannibalism and war and murder and incestuous doings, haha.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
:D

I did not know this about you! I must say that I am delighted.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? You must have been lucky enough to miss one of my hideous, rambling character posts or memes, then. I hear they've been known to kill small children on contact, which I've never seen happen, but I know for a fact that they can burn through a wood table in less than six hours if you leave one out long enough.

[identity profile] scriptamanet26.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if there's formal fandom, exactly, but every class I've ever taken on ancient Greek/Roman whatever tends to get together in a very fandom-y sense, which tended to upset my high school Classics teacher. "Achilles and Patroclus were just very good friends, ladies! What are you trying to imply about Aeneas?"

[identity profile] a-better-thing.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
That is awesome! I really wish I'd had a chance to do Classics at school, my 6th form didn't offer it :( - all my knowledge is gained from reading Greek/Roman literature far more intently than is possibly healthy :P

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, that is the greatest thing I've heard today.

Achilles and Patroclus! Very good friends, indeed.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They admired each others' thighs so platonically.

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
OMFG MORTAL ENGINES!!!!!!
Hmm yeah so those books are pretty much the most amazing underrated works of fiction ever. Not to spoil, but yeah while the writing is a bit clunky and the third book gets a little slow, all of them are setting up for one of the greatest conclusions ever and awes. So much love for those books. Also Hester is amazing throughout.

Tamora Pierce is kind of hit or miss with me but goddamn do I love Mel.

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god upon finishing the first book last night(apparently I was further than I thought) and not wanting to spoil anything, wow. I was not expecting any of that! I'm excited to track down the next ones, though they're a bit hard to find. Also yes, Hester is my favorite.

I've got massive nostalgia goggles on re: Tamora Pierce, so I can't help but love a lot of her stories. I never really got into the Protector of the Small series, and uh I did not particularly enjoy Melting Stones, or Bloodhound. Ugh Bloodhound I. Wughh. I didn't like it much, to say the least. Those are the only ones I can recall really not digging!

[identity profile] jaquenerd.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, I can put a spoiler warning up in here if you want.

OMG YEESSSS. Those books. I remember discovering them in my library and thinking they looked like the stupidest things in the world but, heh, steampunk is hard to come by. I did not expect getting sucked in to this post-post-post apocalyptic crapsack world where everything is awesome yet horrible and Heeeeesssteeeeeerrrr!! <3______<3

I know Amazon has the entire collection for under 20 bucks but I agree, they are hard to find. SO HARD. It's a shame too, I think they are much more entertaining and have better female characters than say, the Hunger Games or whatever the kids are reading today. I would say keep trying as I personally think the books get better as they go. And the cast gets even more diverse and interesting, not to mention layered and the ending of the series is just...GUH.

I will warn you that the first book is probably the most light hearted. IT'S ALL DOWNHILL FROM HERE FOLKS!

Yeah, one of the girls at a summer camp I went to had the first Protector of the Small book and I FELL IN LOVE with it. I managed to track down the rest and read other Pierce books as well! I love her, even though, like I said, some of her books don't hold my attention nearly as well. Although the Circle of Magic books I remember liking.

By not getting into did you mean not read or not interested? D:
Oh yeah, Melting Stones has been sitting on my shelf for six months now. I have yet to open it. ANd I *tried* so hard to read Bloodhound but I just couldn't get into it >____>

I also could never get into Alanna's stuff either haha. I think I read the first book in her series and I want to read the rest but, idk, something about them drives me off. WHich is sad because I love books like hers and her story is one of my favorite genre but IDK MAN

...did you ever read Ella Enchanted?

[identity profile] zyxwvutsrq321.livejournal.com 2011-04-14 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
PROBABLY that would be a good idea, yes! xD

I had just been reading it as a fun, goofy adventure story that didn't make perfect sense and was a little silly a-and occasionally had sort of distressingly emotional parts and then suddenly the end and it was like being hit by a ton of supersad bricks but in a *good* way and ugh <3.

I definitely do want to read the rest! I-I'm a bit concerned, though, about the declining happiness, since I am a weepy, tender soul and I will probably cry everywhere. Ah well! It's totally worth it.

Well the last time I tried to read Protector of the Small I was a lot younger, and I didn't have the patience for it. I'm definitely going to try re-reading when I have the time, especially since quite a few people that I'm very fond of think it's brilliantly told.

Melting Stones wasn't... bad, exactly, just sort of faffy and vaguely OOC, imo. It makes a good quick read but I wasn't affected the way her other books have made me!

I've liked the Alanna books but in retrospect they're a little bit less amazing than I recall. I still get all sniffly at the end of the quartet, though. <3 <3 <3

YES I have read Ella Enchanted and Fairest and those short story fairy tale collections and The Two Princesses of Bamarre! I. I quite like Ms. Levine.
