This is WHY therapy is there for transgendered individuals, and why they have to jump through so many hoops to get to their hormone therapy...

I agree with you here. But, just to be safe, if the party in question is not verifiably batshit insane* (and you can tell from reading their posts), refer to them as the gender they want to be referred to as.

*By which I mean "has all the signs of a serious psychological disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar", NOT "ships something different/has a different opinion from what I do".

And yeah, some people who claim to be trans aren't really trans (like there are some people who claim to have Asperger's or OCD but don't). If they somehow get hormones, this will come back to bite them in the ass. I myself have been given a GID diagnosis by three separate shrinks, but am not on hormones yet because I also have Tourette's and anxiety problems and they want to get THAT out of the way first before the six months of required therapy for testosterone. And I am patient and understand why this is.

Oh, of course. n.n That's what I'm getting at.

Hoorah for a mature response, I thank you. <3

An approximate 50% (commit or attempt suicide in part because of amateur hour psychology and gender policing) gratuity has been added to your check.

Lemme give you some friendly advice.

Huh, that's strange, seems you feel entitled to respect that you think others have to ~earn. No, it doesn't work that way. Also, shove your goddamn tone argument up your cisfuck ass. We don't have to give you any goddamn ~respect that you didn't fucking ~earn.

"I should print this whole thread out and wipe my ass with it."

And you're a moderator? Way to be fucking mature. Just because you're ~offended~, doesn't mean you have to throw a fit.

Did you even read the post or did you just skim like every dumbass in the transgender communities does? (And just to be clear, I am trans and a member of multiple communities. It's not uncommon for people, including the mods, to skim over posts and ask people for information that they already mentioned.)

"The therapies ... are in place specifically for the reason that so many mental disorders can cause a person to think they are transgender when they really have some sort of mental illness."

This is not "determining their gender because of how crazy they act." Read on.

"These people would later regret going through with the hormones and surgeries since they are not actually transgender."

Believe it or not, plenty of people are misdiagnosed as being transgender! Have you never heard about people having SRS, and then having a 2nd SRS to change back because being [whatever sex] wasn't as cool as it seemed?

Look at the transgender communities. Plenty of your members are to blame for problems and insecurities that other members have. Many of them are pretty fucking sexist themselves. I don't even post anymore because I hate being questioned on my "validity of being FTM" because I don't want surgery, which has happened before. "You can't be a guy if you don't have a penis!" "You like guys? Well, why not just stay a girl?" "I don't think you look masculine enough, you should try growing a beard."

I don't give a fuck if your dislike, or "loathing" is aggressive. Be mature. You're a moderator, shouldn't you have experience with that?

oh my fucking god

Yes, some people question their gender and later decide the conclusion they reached was wrong. This is a sad thing, and I'm not dismissing it.

But mental illness or any other disability does NOT invalidate your other identities. You can be mentally ill and trans. Trans people are people, and some people are mentally ill. Trans people do not have to be "saner" than cis people in order for their gender identities to deserve respect, and while you're at it, this is really fucking disrespectful to people who go through mental illness. You're basically telling these people, "you're crazy so obviously other people are more qualified to tell you who you are."

I'm aware I sound bitter. I AM bitter. I've been told that I couldn't really be gay because I was mentally ill. A bunch of people felt that because of some brain wiring that caused me problems, they knew whether I was gay or straight better than I ever could... and of course they decided I was straight since who the hell is actually gay? Because of this, I couldn't trust my own instincts about my sexuality for a very long time. I thought, "well, yes, I definitely feel like I'm more attracted to women, but what if I'm too fucked up to make this call on my own?"

Some mentally ill people are gay. Some mentally ill people are trans. All mentally ill people are people, and people deserve a lot better than patronizing identity policing.

you too <333333333

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Did you even read?

They are NOT saying that "If you're crazy, you can't be transgender!" Plenty of people are misdiagnosed as transgender. Plenty of people are fooled into believing they're transgender. Just like plenty of transgender people are misdiagnosed as not being transgender [enough].

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Did read, and to me it sounded like they were saying "if someone is obviously crazy, you don't have to respect their gender identity".

And yes, I do know that some people question their gender and change their mind. I already said that (and, uh, gender is an identity, not an illness, by the way). But I fail to see why it's bad to question if you're not sure, or why, if you end up with an answer you later think is incorrect, why you were "fooled" into deciding that. I do think it's really sad when people think transitioning would help them be happier and it doesn't work out, but saying "some people are trans and if you think you might be, you should look into it" isn't at all deceptive.

"Batshit insanity" (great way to refer to people diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, by the way - did you just assume no one with either diagnosis would see your comment?) doesn't rule out transness, and psychosis or delusions related to believing that one is a member of another sex a) does not present the way trans people present at all, and b) is pretty fucking rare.

Also, self-dx of Asperger's Syndrome tends to have a very high accuracy rate, per professionals who actually deal with autistic clients and have published a lot of autism-related research. The "someone who claims to have AS and doesn't really have it" thing seems to be a pretty big straw man to me.
