And you know they're self-diagnosed HOW?

A lot of real Aspies do that, you know. It doesn't make them right by any means, only manipulative jackasses, but on the other hand it doesn't make them any less actual Aspies.

Not to mention the assumption that self-diagnosed means faking. People can self-diagnose because they--and I know this will be a shocker for you--have actually studied something and firmly believe that they meet the diagnostic criteria. Yes, some of THIS group will use such as an excuse for asshattery, but that also doesn't automatically mean that they're using it as a cover. Likely they'd do the same if they were officially diagnosed.

While I'm sick of people trying to use Asperger's as an excuse for asshattery, it also doesn't for a moment mean that anyone who does so must be faking it or pulling it out of nowhere. That kind of thinking demeans everyone.

"Dude, that's a really mean thing to say."

"It must be my Asperger's acting up."

"Oh shit, I'm sorry. That was insensitive."

"No, it's okay. It's self-diagnosed, ha ha."

I'm not the OP - but I feel like I could be. I go to lots of anime conventions on the East Coast (like NY Comicon, Anime NEXT, Otakon, Katsucon, etc.), and I have either been party to an exchange like this or heard about an exchange like this multiple times.

I think it's the [compulsive behavior + obsessive interest + social awkwardness] factor that leads people to self diagnose, as if that were any excuse for saying something like "How STUPID could you BE for not thinking about that one character that appeared for three minutes in the PSP remake of a game that wasn't originally released in North America DUH" like the Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons. It's like people use ADD as a codeword for a certain stereotyped behavior, I think.

That's weird, I haven't. And even then...why is the other person apologizing for pointing out that something's a mean thing to say? How is that suddenly insensitive?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, unless someone right out states they're self diagnosed I think we need to stay away from diagnosing others.

Plus self diagnosis is not always wrong, and a lot of things really do have to be self diagnosed FIRST before you can even tell a doctor about it. I had to realize I was depressed and tell a doctor all my symptoms to get it confirmed. Stuff that goes on in the mind is something really only you know, that's why people are misdiagnosed all the time because doctors can't get inside the head and see EXACTLY what is going on.

Everyone should work to be kind and not use something like Asperger's as an excuse, but I don't appreciate people looking down on others like they are all faking.

Yeah, exactly. My dad is self-diagnosed, I'm officially diagnosed, and neither of us uses it as an excuse for anything. It's really stupid to see this happening, both people trying to use it as an excuse (whether they have it or not) and people assuming that anyone who uses it as such must be self-diagnosed, and that people who self-diagnose must be inveterate asshats.

...Don't you have a hurricane to outwalk or something?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-15 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
+1

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, because five and a half year old wank has everything to do with the actual subject being discussed.

[identity profile] blackjackrocket.livejournal.com 2011-04-15 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
And that has anything to do with my point how?
