I had a friend who worked there for a while and she loved it. Didn't hear any complaints! Life's what you make of it, anon c: Besides, it's the happiest place on earth. It shouldn't be too hard to find a song in your heart!

I have a friend who worked on the cruise line for a really long time. She loooooved it. Dunno how similar it would be to working at the park, but I still say go for it.

[identity profile] misscherri.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, anon. I'd kill to work there, but my dreams would be shattered if the horror stories were true.

I personally couldn't mix business with pleasure. I worked at a restaurant for awhile that was my absolute favorite place to eat, and now I hate the place/the food/the thought of it. Disney is supposed to be that magical place you visit for fun, but when it becomes your job and you're there everyday, how fun does it stay?

That being said, as someone who knows far too many people who work/worked at Disney (I live in Orlando), it definitely is a mixed bowl. The people that hate it, HATE it (they've got great stories to tell though!), but the people that love it, really love it. Disney is very much a stickler to their rules; there are people who don't feel comfortable in that "black and white, absolutely NO GREY" environment, while other people thrive in it.

I've had 3 or 4 friends work there and all of them had a blast! What are the horror stories I'm missing out on? D:

There have been other rumours too, but this is the most solid one I've seen

I have two different friends who went through hell (one got injured on the job). Then again I've had friends who were healthy and happy while working there. It might depend on where you are and what you're doing as part of your job.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should do it. I've had four friends participate in their internship program, and three of them loved it so much they went back to work with Disney once they graduated. I haven't heard any of them say that their experiences made them "lose the magic" of Disney; if anything it made them feel that even more. If it's your dream to do it I say go and do it :)

[identity profile] imouto.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends on where you work. WDW is practically a city, and your job placement completely impacts your experience.

I started as character room costuming at Epcot, and had the worst experience ever. Creeper older men coworkers were harassing me, another coworker was trying to blackmail me sort of, the managers were the most passive aggressive jerks ever, etc.

But then I got switched over to be a backstage costumer for the Beauty and the Beast stage show at Hollywood Studios and my take on the job completely turned around. The people there were so much nicer and competent and the job was more challenging and interesting. From there I got to work on the Block Party Parade and Star Wars Weekends, and all sorts of fun stuff.

So yeah. It can be awesome, and it can also suck, it's really just a crapshoot. The good thing is though, that there's so many jobs there, if you're placed in one you absolutely detest, you can get moved to another section pretty easily.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. :\ As a kid I just assumed it really WAS the happiest place on Earth and nothing could ever be awesomer, but...yeah, as I age I understand the politics and weirdness more. :P But still. I totes wanna go back.

[identity profile] summervivaldi.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I also had a couple friends who went through the internship program, one of them absolutely loved it and thought it was a great opportunity. The other not so much, but her outlook on many things is pretty negative. I say if you have a generally bright disposition about most things, go for it!

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The people I know who work there love it, though Disney is pretty strict about their rules. On the flip side, everyone I've ever known to work at Universal has HATED it. I guess it just depends on what job you get and who you're around.

I think it depends on what you do. If you get a job as an Imagineer, it's a apparently amazing. But if it's one of their "internship" programs or they say you'll go to Disney University, it's a scam--they have tons of people "interning" at their parks for below minimum wage selling merch and shit in the hopes that they'll eventually get off the waiting list for classes at Disney University. They keep people going for *years* if they don't quit first.

[identity profile] xfkirsten.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It will ruin it... and it won't.

I worked there for about four years. I've been in merchandise at MK, I've been a performer, and I've worked in attractions at MK and DAK.

I left the company last year because I got tired of the drama and the stress and the backstabbing and the horribly low pay. Even knowing about all of that that going in, after four years, it was all just too much.

I still love Walt Disney World with all my heart. I went back to visit last month, and it was still incredible and magical. I met some amazing friends there, and made some of the best memories of my life. But at the same time, I can't see myself going back there to work unless it was for the job of a lifetime (and that certainly isn't a front-line attractions job that any person with a pulse who's over 18 and walks into Casting can get).

Bottom line: if you have a goal with the company and the background/ability to reach it, go for it! Opportunities are there, but you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get them. Be prepared for a WHOLE lot of crap thrown your way - from guests, from other CMs, from management. But if you can put up with that... free Walt Disney World for as long as you work there. That is an incredible gift.

Good luck!

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It probably depends on what sort of job you have there. Personally, I think it would be tremendously fascinating to work in their hydroponic vegetable house or with their landscaping/floral arranging departments. A friend of mine showed me photos from their flower show this year along with some topiaries and they were so beautifully done that it nearly brought me to tears.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who worked as one of the janitor-types. He didn't seem to enjoy it much, but he's also a little neurotic. I have another friend who worked as a hostess at one of their restaurants, and she had a fantastic time. It probably depends on the kind of work you'd get, but also how much you've accepted that, like any job working with the public, you will have to put up with some crap, and unlike most, you will have to do so with the most chipper attitude possible. But it still seems like it would be worth it.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
And for what it's worth, there are still days when I dream about being a random street character in the Hollywood Studios park.

[identity profile] lazzchan.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I have friends that work there and they've said it's 'the best and worst job you'll ever have'. There's a lot of BS down the lines, but mostly? It's amazing. The stuff you do, the people you see and all the backstage stuff you get to participate in. It may be the most magical place on earth, but it's also hard work! Don't let that get in the way of your dreams, though. If you want to work there, I don't think you'll lose the magic. :) My friends haven't yet.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a little torn by it, too...I want to be Belle (couldn't at my current weight, though!), but at the same time oh man, I don't want it to make me hate kids or Disney!

(Then again, I worked at a daycare and I LOVED it and loved working with the kids, so...XD)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, anon. :-\ Not that I'll ever get to work there anyway :P

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
When I visited there a few years ago, I mused about the same thing...the idea of working there was so attractive. But I'm sure, like any job, there are drawbacks and stress.
I say go for it and just try it out. Any bad experiences you have can hopefully be erased in time; there's more than one Disney Park you could enjoy yourself at.
Good luck.

Working as a CM

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I did the Walt Disney World college program almost ten years ago. I grew up wanting to be Harriet Burns or Mary Blair, or at the very least, an Imagineer.

I cried on the day when I got my oval-shaped name tag. Sure, I had days that weren't as "magical" as others, but whenever I felt down I would look at where I was STANDING and I would smile and everything was alright again!

Do it, anon! Instead of being the child inside of the magic spell, you get to be one of the magicians casting it, and that is just as special!

[identity profile] dream-everyday.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon, I have several friends who work at Disneyland(and a friend who worked at WDW as part of the College Program), and they love their jobs. Yes, there is lots of drama, and stress, but that comes with every job. Working with Disney is an amazing experience, and I think you should go for it.

Go for it, and have a wild time!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-19 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You can either go for it, or spend your life wondering what it would have been like if you did. I decided that I didn't want to spend my life wondering. So, I did the college program http://disney.go.com/disneycareers/disneycollegeprogram/

I had my heart set on working either Kilamanjaro Safaris, or, preferrably, Mission Space. And I got neither. Instead I ended up working turnstyles at DAK, which, if you've ever seen what a park is like at opening, is challenging to say the least.

But do you know what? Though I certainly had bad days, I ended up loving my DAK Pack (coworkers) and my job. After blow-in, I got to spend my day talking with guests about nature and spend my day surrounded by plants and animals.

If you're open to it (And not everyone is), working as a CM, even at a job you didn't want, has a bit of disney magic that the guests never get to experience. And then you get to make magic for the guests. That may sound cheezy, but if you do it, you'll understand the first time you make a little princess's day.
