So true. The only thing I don't like about him is that the maleShep's voice actor isn't as good as Jennifer Hale. Still it's 'your' character.

And even the VA won't stop me from doing a 2nd playthrough of ME2 as a paragon something-other-than-soldier male Shep.

[identity profile] roadconezombie.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Bioware fandom. I think I figured out your problem right there.

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen this hate, which makes me glad. Your preference doesn't make the other option automatically crap :/

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The PROPER reason is that Marc Meer turned in one of the most unfeeling performances I've heard in a long time. It's one thing when VA was new and budgets couldn't afford to spend a lot on it- "BARRY, WHERE'S BARRY" will go down in history in all its wonderful cheesy wooden glory, because we acknowledge and accept that VA in the mid-90s was new and clunky and cheap- but there's no excuse for a guy like Marc Meer getting paid what was likely a very large sum for his work and he comes off so... god damned... WOODEN.

I appreciate what you're trying to say, but Male Shepard and Female Shepard are not the same character, and the choice of gender in that game makes a huge difference in the character dynamics of the narrative.

[identity profile] viserys.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, THIS. I can't even... I have ranted on this exact topic so many times, it's exhausting.

What's worse is that it's now happening in the Dragon Age fandom too, with Hawke. Before the game came out, there was already a lot of M!Hawke vs F!Hawke going on, and lately I've been seeing it start to boil up again. And like you said, it's not even about the voice actors -- it's about the characters themselves. Ugh. It's just the most outlandishly ridiculous thing ever.

:| ...There goes my wanting to be in the DA fandom

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think it has something to do with fandom throwing fits about M!Shep getting to be in all the promo bits whereas F!Shep gets the shaft.

Personally I also think it's nonsensical. They're both characters whose personalities you craft based on in-game choices. Hating on one or the other is just silly.

I love both Sheps and don't get the hate either. Now I think that Hale is the superior VA but that's just opinion and doesn't stop me being cool with those who prefer maleShep.

Now as for where the hate comes from, I think it's mostly a reaction on the part of femShep fans to those who say that having a woman in Shepard's role is stupid, or bitch about her being non canon because mShep is the one in all the promo art etc.

[identity profile] sagacious-rage.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)

This seriously pushes my RAEG buttons so hard. You can't apply traditional concepts of canon to these games, they're specifically designed to defy that. And all the promo materials are made out-of-house anyway. Or am I supposed to believe that the DA:O Sacred Ashes trailer is the "canon" and everything that actually happened in the game is some sort alternate universe?

Hmm. Personally I have a bit of a reaction to man!Shep (especially Sheploo) because of him coming out a bit like the stereotypical space marine, all Paragon of Manliness and stuff, so I prefer fem!Shep because she does all the things that man!Shep does but just happens to be a woman, so there's a sort of feminist undertone to it, which I like. That said, there's nothing really wrong with man!Shep (except the dodgy VA). A part of it is just that I played a fem!Shep right off the bat; the voiced part means it's easier to form an attachment to Shepard and to what an individual thinks is "canon".
This is getting wordy. Tl;dr: Both Sheps are good, but I prefer a lady.

Of course, I'm now currently fangirling dude!Hawke and I think that's largely just because he was the first I played.

+1!

Also, I dislike/have no interest in male!Shep and male!Hawke pretty much mainly because they get all the promo-coverage. That's my personal reason, though, so I don't judge any of their fans /shrugs

The voice acting does make a pretty substantial difference, though. Renegade MaleShep comes across to me as a total asshole, whereas Renegade FemShep just sounds tough and no-nonsense, and that's all in the acting. She often seems like she has a note of wry humour in her voice, whereas MaleShep is always rather po-faced. I definitely like one much more than the other, and it's not JUST based on their gender (although that also comes into it, because it's basically impossible not to at least subconsciously alter your perceptions of someone based on gender).

[identity profile] canthari.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? no, wait, no way...

You should have misunderstood something, because there is no way people can be this stupid, it isn't even worthwhile to hate a Shepard, it's just plain moronic... or it isn't?

[identity profile] october-miss.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"You should have misunderstood something." What do you mean? I'm sorry, I'm not being sarcastic and I'm not trying to be mean, I'm genuinely confused by what you're saying.

video games have enough rugged solider action hero white guys, so it annoys me that this one guy is the figurehead of the franchise

walk the plank, sheploo

(also hale's performance really is way better and i see people point that out all the time, so it's not like that's not a common reason to prefer femshep)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I played both, but damn is Jennifer Hale ever a better voice actor. It's not an "excuse" if that's the reasoning, OP. Far, far from it.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the default male head and I don't think the VA is as great as the female VA, but they're both awesome. Though fem!Shep is a little bit more awesome for me personally, because it feels kind of awesome to see that kind of character as a female (and not running around dressed like Miranda even though I love her too) and m!Shep is kind of... eh stereotypical awesome man hero... which hey is actually fun to play too? IDK. I can see disliking him or bringing up arguments about gender representation in genre, but I can't see hating him since he's still pretty awesome... since he's Shepard.

I just really hate Male!Shep's voice. Jennifer Hale just sounds so much better. Only reason I ever made a Male!Shep is to romance Tali.

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
This drives me mad.

I think Fem!Shep has better voice acting, but I really like Male!Shep's voice, because the woodenness makes his seem so AWKWARD, which really works with how I've built my version of Shepard.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like what's going on with Pokemon. Seriously guyz, idgi.

[identity profile] yuumeko.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, is there really dilemma over that? I can understand voice acting preference but they're the same god damn people. Character-wise, there's nothing different about their beliefs, actions (physically too), thoughts, or opinions, except they're presented with different voice acting. For gods sake, you're suppose to project YOURSELF on to them. Its like comparing two slightly different blank slates to each other, ugh.
