huh
I'm not fond of the franchise at all (and sort of wish people would stop shoving it down my throat), but I doesn't really have much to do with Battle Royale aside of the game itself. The world around it, the plot and the characters are pretty damn different.

This. They share a concept, but they're different stories. Hell, the ancient Greeks did it before Battle Royale did, but apparently because Battle Royale did it with a contemporary twist first, it forever owns kids killing kids for sport.

Do you mean Olympic type games? Because, no.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually referring to Theseus; how after winning the war he waged with Athens, demanded that Athenian boys and girls be sent to Crete to be devoured by the Minotaur as punishment.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
King Minos =/= Theseus.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2011-04-16 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Still no.

Also, they weren't sent there to try to defeat the Minotaur. It wasn't a game, it was a death sentence to each and every one of those kids. They were there as food. Period. There was no honor in being chosen. None. She may have been inspired by the Greek myth, but what happens in here book is not what was happening in Crete.

Also, Theseus was sent to destroy the Minotaur. He was one of those boys and girls. King Minos waged war or just threatened too.

No one was saying "THIS IS AN EXACT RETELLING OF THE MYTH OF CRETE." They said that they "did it first" which is a valid enough statement given how similar their concepts are.

There was no honor in being chosen.

lol i'm going to assume you haven't actually read the books, or that you're just really horrible at reading comprehension. It's stated several times that the "honor" is a farce by the Capitol to rub salt in the wound, and the only people who are even remotely happy about it are the Careers.

They neither did kids killing kids, not killing for sport first. That was the statement. Maybe you should brush up on your reading comprehension.

It really doesn't matter if the honor is farce, there is status associated with the distinction. You fail at culture, apparently.

I think the poster meant things like the Athenian children being sent to Crete as sacrifices to the Minotaur, maybe? I seem to remember Collins saying she got her idea for the Hunger Games (the games themselves) partly from that.

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2011-04-16 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
My main point was that it wasn't for sport. At all. At all. No one was going to win, they were all food.

[identity profile] later-tuesday.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe they're referring to the "mock" fights Spartan boys went through as part of their training?

I thought modern day Games was an entire sub genre now?

[personal profile] meadowphoenix 2011-04-16 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a reason why mock fights are mock fights though. And that's army training, so...

It probably is, but it doesn't resemble Theseus' plight, though people may be inspired by it. I think they're more inspired by gladiators, though, and up the pathos by making the fighters children.

[identity profile] quasiarti.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
like how Naturo invent ninjas, One piece invent pirates, Twilight invent vampires!!!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Greeks? Not so much. You mean the Romans? And even then it wasn't a case of fight to the death when children were involved.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I specifically referring to a Greek myth. King Minos, Crete, punishing the Athenians by having them select and send kids to the Minotaur to be eaten. Unless you know of a similar Roman one.

And while it isn't fighting to death exactly (because they all die in the myth, no one gets to live), they all sample the idea of children being selected for death by the powers that be as punishment (and to instill fear) for their respective society's actions.

You mentioned specifically for sport, though and kids killing kids, neither of which is happening in that Greek myth.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2011-04-17 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
*this* I'd love to know how "Send me your children to become food" could ever be translated as "We're going to make a game out of it, and they have to kill each other while at it."

I am in love with you icon. May I use?

It's not really mine. It was made by [livejournal.com profile] last5, so as long as you give proper credit, sure, go ahead :) They did a lot of Avenue Q icons.
