THIS!

It's a poor attempt to cash in on an idea like Battle Royale. I'm not someone who does gorey movies that often but Battle Royale struck a cord with me.

huh
I'm not fond of the franchise at all (and sort of wish people would stop shoving it down my throat), but I doesn't really have much to do with Battle Royale aside of the game itself. The world around it, the plot and the characters are pretty damn different.

Funny, I'm tired of people bitching about how it's a Battle Royale ripoff EVERY TIME IT'S MENTIONED.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I too thought this would be just an Americanized version of Battle Royale too... until I actually read it.

I liked the first two books. What I don't like (aside from Mockingjay in its entirety) is the fact that they're getting so much hype. They're entertaining, but not great.

Yeah, OP, I'm tired of hearing about it too. I couldn't care less who's going to be in the movie.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. The backstories and universes that they take place in are completely different.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-16 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
*headtilt* Not read either of them, but if the similarities go further than the premise, that could make a really interesting comparison (Japanese vs American, female main character as opposed to male main character).

Damn it, you have my hopes up now!

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
nah, they're different

the writing style of the hunger games is a billion times worse. the plot was excellent, but the sentence fragments? not so much. |:

I'm a fan of both.

[identity profile] pureaddiction.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you actually read it? I was in the same boat. I dismissed it once I heard the premise. And while the games are similar they are done for different reasons. The story outside of the games is just as important as what happens in the games unlike BR.

Also I don't get the hype. I really enjoyed the books but they're not anything special. They're entertaining but they can be full of sloppy writing as well. But what else could you expect from the YA genre?

[identity profile] quasiarti.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure!!! because some stories can't have similar elements with other stories right?!

[identity profile] octoberdreaming.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The author had never even heard of or read Battle Royale before she wrote the books. When someone mentioned the similarities to her, she went to her publisher and asked if she should read/watch Battle Royale. Her publisher told her no, she should not do that until she had finished writing the series.

I've read both - there are definitely some similarities in the themes, but the execution, style, and story are so different! I feel they are both worth reading. I began reading The Hunger Games with skepticism, but after finishing the series, I believe that it is its own thing, there is a great deal to love about it, and it doesn't need to be compared to Battle Royale in order to stand on its own.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
They're different stories.

And I think these books are awesome. I loved how she portrayed the people from the Capitol. It would have been so easy dismiss them as evil people, but instead we had Cinna, Effie, Octavia. We had Haymitch, who was an awesome character. We had Coin with her horrible plans. We had people who actually suffered with their experiences. They looked very real to me.

oh man, I'm gonna read that series soon (somehow up to this point I've remained unspoiled to everything except the main characters' names) and I don't know if the American-Battle-Royale thing makes me more excited to read it or suddenly much less excited =/

I used to be all up in arms about the ~Battle Royale ripoff~ thing, but honestly, it's not one. A similar concept, yes, but a totally different execution.

When people hype up the writing in THG, though, it still makes me want to strangle them. Sure, they're entertaining! But "The girl gets hit in the chest with an arrow. She falls over, dead" =/= awesome writing. /RANT

Ehhhh, not exactly. I initially started reading the Hunger Games because of all the comparisons, so I wanted to see for myself. To be honest, they're not really that similar besides "oh hey, kids gotta kill for sport", which isn't the newest concept. I'm tired of hearing about them - I mean, yeah, they're entertaining, but they're not the best goddamn series in recent years.

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I've only read this first book and haven't read Battle Royale but it seems like people keep saying that the idea of the forced fight to the death between teenagers makes it a rip off and that's just silly. It's a totally obvious idea that can be done dozens of ways. I have no trouble believing that Collins had never heard of it when she wrote her book.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Breaking news, someone on Fandom!Secrets doesn't like a popular series.

Having read the book, and heard a lot about Battle Royal, I do see where you're coming from, but pop culture has survived much worse adaptions and rip-offs (insert Eragon joke here) so I can't say I'm that upset about this.

[identity profile] sam-the-redhead.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny...the supposed similarities between the two are one of the main reasons why I want to try to pick up the series.

A lot of books share similarities between each other, that doesn't make it a rip-off.

Harry Potter shares similarities to Ender's Game, after all.

[identity profile] dreaming-faerie.livejournal.com 2011-04-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you even read the two books?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Christ, this type of opinion is so fucking stupid it hurts.

If you knew anything about literature, then you'd know that there are only, maybe, seven different stories. Seven. There hasn't been a truly original piece of fiction in hundreds of fucking years. Style, execution, setting, character -- all of these things can be different. But the basic themes and plots? They've all been done before.

If you're going to make such a stupid fucking statement, then have the guts and the gumption to say "I hate all modern stories." Because, sweet pea, unless you do hate all modern stories, then your "OMG THIS ISN'T ORIGINAL" complaint is complete bullshit and you're either an ignorant hypocrite or an idiot fan girl with an axe to grind.

(And no, this isn't the whining of a Hunger Games fan. I haven't even read the damn books and I have no desire to. I just hate the type of attitude that you have, because it means that a) you don't actually know shit about the medium and b) you think you're some sort of big shot for making the "omg rip-off" criticism).

There are lots of things you can criticize The Hunger Games for, but the Battle Royale-ripoff opinion is the one I always roll my eyes at. The two utilize a similar plot concept, but it is far less important in THG than it is in Battle Royale. THG goes off in another direction entirely, which shown best in how there aren't any games in the final book, and even the series' use of them is meant to bring up different points. It's a war story.

It is very easy to say, though. I mean, you hear "kids killing each other" and "Battle Royale ripoff!" would be the first thing to come to mind.
