There are lots of things you can criticize The Hunger Games for, but the Battle Royale-ripoff opinion is the one I always roll my eyes at. The two utilize a similar plot concept, but it is far less important in THG than it is in Battle Royale. THG goes off in another direction entirely, which shown best in how there aren't any games in the final book, and even the series' use of them is meant to bring up different points. It's a war story.

It is very easy to say, though. I mean, you hear "kids killing each other" and "Battle Royale ripoff!" would be the first thing to come to mind.

Well, to be fair, there are more similarities. A friend of mine who read both summed it up with "It's 'Battle Royale'. Seriously. Even down to the love interest getting a leg injury." *laugh* She much prefered the second and third for that reason, because (as you said) it's a war story.

I really like the Hunger Games. I thnk Katniss is a believable 16 year old, although I quite often dislike her. I feel that Mockingjay could have gone two ways and chose the one that was less interesting to me, but it was good. I shared it with people I knew would enjoy it. The fandom refrain that Collins can Do No Wrong is tiresome though.

There are similarities, yes, I'd never deny that. But I feel like the overall goal is so different. It makes more sense if people are talking about the first book alone, but I'm used to thinking of it as the introduction to the war instead of the story in itself.

I've never heard that Collins Can Do No Wrong, to be honest. Everyone I know who enjoys it thinks that Collins Does Quite A Bit Wrong, Actually. Haha! I know I certainly do. But I loved the characters enough to enjoy it all. I often disliked Katniss as well, but I thought that was interesting about her -- she wasn't an ideal heroine.

They tend to be the same people who act like five year olds if you don't agree with them. And a couple of people who are so used to being The Ones Who Know Everything that they are rudely dismissive. Every fandom has them, and I seem to attract them like mad. I don't have time to go digging to find a better match for my interests/tastes within the fandom though, so it's the price I pay. It can definitely be funny though when the opinion I expressed and was dismissed out of hand a couple of months back suddenly becomes The One Truth That People Obsess About. *laughs*
