It's always seemed pretty solidly in second place, to me!

I don't like either pairing, but I'm just too used to yaoi fangirls and their super special character interpretations. Shinra really pisses me off (while Celty's one of my favourites), so that pairing's way more likely to make me angry at the end of the day. And it's canon.

Could be different for the OP, but.

I think it probably is second place, but even then, there is a HUGE gap between 1st and 2nd place in this fandom.

I see why that would bother people, then, but at the same time I can't say I really get the Shinra hate? It seems pretty common but I'm not really sure why. I tend to have a weakness for weirdo scientist/doctor/etc type characters, though, see; the lovely dipshit in my icon, Komui Lee, so I am rather biased.

But you can't even dabble in the fandom at all without seeing Shizaya everywhere you turn. Shinra/Celty is pretty avoidable, even to some extent in the series because Shinra isn't a major character in the anime. So that's kinda what I don't get here, too.

just my several cents lol

Komui isn't like Shinra at all, though. Shinra is douchey, manipulative, obsessive and stalkery, even going so far as to hide the one thing Celty actually wants just so he can play happy families with her a little longer. Even though Celty made it extremely obvious that she seriously wanted that head back and didn't feel whole without it. She even travelled to Japan from Ireland to get it back, and Shinra still managed to coerce her into giving up looking for it because LOL ILU?

Whereas Komui just seems to be a goofy dork, and Lenalee never seems to mind him like Celty minded Shinra.

...Though, that's probably because Komui wasn't actively try to manipulate Lenalee into her abandoning her goals and aspirations just to love him.

I'm not saying they're particularly alike beyond the "eccentric science-y dude" archetype. I just happen to like that archetype a lot, which is why I mention it.

And see, I don't really see it that way myself. I guess I can see why people might, but it's just not how I see him at all. For one thing, Celty was in no way obligated to stay with him. She didn't have to live with him, she could've easily figured out a different living arrangement for herself if she really didn't want his company.

Also the whole deal with her head? It struck me as something else entirely than just what it literally was. It struck me as a self acceptance message. She wanted her head, but she didn't really know why. The whole thing with the caricature artist in particular is what made it seem like a self acceptance message; his initial feelings on the matter were meant to mirror Celty's, in a way. His feeling was that his drawings weren't complete because dullahans are supposed to have heads. That's just how the legend goes. But Shinra points out "why do they need heads?". Celty didn't actually need it. She came to that conclusion on her own, that she was happy as she was with Shinra. Shinra never forced her into anything. He just wanted her to think about exactly why she wanted what she wanted, and if maybe that wasn't actually what she wanted at all. Celty turned out to agree with him. If she hadn't, she would have continued her search. But she actually felt liberated in her decision to accept herself as she was. She had what she needed; a place in the world, friends, someone who loved her for who she was, and happiness. What would the head have added to it?

And I like the good-natured loser who does their best at everything but fails at life in general, as well as the sarcastic one-liner character, and the jerk with a heart of gold. I also despise tsunderes.

But that would take a lot of effort compared to, "Yo, Shinra, can I crash with you?", and she had the added benifit of him knowing exactly what she was there for, what she actually was, and she could lounge around the apartment without worrying about some nosy landlady walking in and finding out she has no head. Plus, she got along fine with Shinra, when he wasn't telling her OMG YOU DON'T NEED YOUR HEAD YOU ONLY NEED ME STOP LOOKING FOR YOUR HEAD SERIOUSLY YOU DON'T EVEN NEED IT I'M NEVER TELLING YOU WHERE IT IS SO STOP LOOKING FOR IT NOW.

Shinra's input was entirely unnecessary. Sure, it may have worked in the long run, but only because Shinra was actively manipulating Celty into stopping searching for her head and to just accept that she only needs him already, jeez.

Whether Celty needed her head or not, she wanted it, and that's what matters. She wanted it enough to spend her entire time without it searching for it, and to hop continents in order to find it.

Dullahans are supposed to have heads, just like humans are supposed to have heads, so who knows how Celty's perspective changed without it? If I could survive without my head, and someone stole my head off me, you're damn right that I'd want my head back more than anything else. It's a part of me, just like Celty's head is a part of her. It just happened to not be attached to her body.

That's how Celty felt, so in the end, it doesn't matter that Celty didn't need it, because Celty definitely and undeniably wanted it, and Shinra was trying to coerce her out of it just so she'd abandon her no.1 goal and spend all her time playing waifu to him.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-04-19 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true, but Celty is not a lazy person. She could've spruced up an abandoned building and been fine with that; I'm sure a dullahan would be used to less than luxurious living arrangements. She was willing to live in the cargo hold of a ship, after all. If she really had a problem with Shinra she could've gone somewhere else and I think she probably would've.

And really, I do not see it as manipulation. It was merely a suggestion; ultimately it was Celty's decision as to whether or not she agreed with him. He never actually stopped her from finding her head. He withheld information from her, yes, and that wasn't cool but people aren't perfect and they do act selfishly sometimes, and Shinra could have made much worse decisions.

Also, it should be noted that a lot of Celty's reasoning for wanting her head back had to do with curiosity. Personality-wise she was happy with herself. She was happy with the friends she had and with being with Shinra. Sure, finding her head may have been a good thing for her, but it could also have resulted in a complete change in her personality. Deep down, Celty is a good person who wants to do good things and help people, but what is a dullahan? A bringer of death. Celty getting her head back could have changed her into the monster that various extras continually assumed she was due to her being headless. She wouldn't have wanted that.

But my point is that I see it as it being a self acceptance message. It calls into question why she wanted it. I think it's meant to be a more abstract parallel to things like this that real people go through. People who want to be taller, shorter, have bigger breasts, be blonde, have a smaller nose, be thinner (strictly because of looks), etc. There is someone out there who would love a person with these flaws for who they are, just like Shinra loves Celty even though she's a dullahan without a head.

[identity profile] fygar-dragon.livejournal.com 2011-04-21 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
But she didn't have a problem with Shinra, when he wasn't going "hey celty you know that head you desperately want, you should probably stop searching for it because i don't like the idea of you having it".

It wasn't a suggestion. To quote my friend, he knew where it was THE ENTIRE TIME but didn't bother telling her, while still going on all come ooonn, celtyyyy, you only need meeee. and implying that she should give up because she'd never find it or whatever.

He was trying to stop her from finding the thing she said she wanted so badly, just because HE liked her better without it.

my computer is super slow so I'll reply more later
