Me too, anon, me too! I could have written this secret.

[identity profile] cysfics.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Everything I needed to learn about sex, I got from fic. No, seriously.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-25 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Damn! You surprised the hell out of me! I've read your fic and all I can say is... it's damn good for being influenced by other fic!

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...and I could have just written this response. Because those were the exact words I was thinking.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Good porn is good porn.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Most kink and porn is not realistic anyhow. And you don't have to experience something to write it accurately.

[identity profile] fishnetmom.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. And sexual experience does not equal writing good porn either.

And it's NEVER EVER realistic. You never get a moment when a character is spitting out another character's pubic hair, there's never a moment where a character gags giving a blowjob...that's why it's a fantasy piece... :)

I think this is the case for more smut writers as anyone'd suspect. As long as you make it believable, that people enjoy it and that you enjoy it, I don't see what could be wrong about it.

And well. You can write about dragons, climbing mountains, dying or working in an office without having ever experienced it, right? Writers with a sexual life don't necessarily try everything they come up with in their fictions in their real lives, either.

So it's cool, OP. Imagination rocks ^^

[identity profile] fishnetmom.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the flip of this, I've been married for 8 years, I'm over twice as old as the rest of most of my fandom and I avoid graphic sex scenes like the plague because they scare me. I'm always feeling like I'm doing technical writing.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, you're not alone; I've heard plenty of people say that. Experience helps, sure, but fic's not just about logistics and mechanics, it's about feelings and instincts too.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Insert obligatory "I can't do magic, never been to space, couldn't shoot a gun to save my life but I still write about it" comment.

You don't have to experience everything to write about it successfully otherwise there'd be a lot less fantasy and sci fi in the world. Not to mention, you can experience something and be total crap at writing about it.

[identity profile] nadinthedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
there have been so many secrets of exactly the same kind here, that I think these peple can already unite into a community...

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
me too:/

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel anon. I write smut with another person for an RP. You and I have the same experience aka none. I keep thinking my writing will suck because I haven't experienced every single thing I write in the smut.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
meh, I've heard exactly this statement from a bunch of people who write tasty fic. No worries!

You're getting praise from others who've also never had sex

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
or been kissed, etc.

Don't sweat it. Just go with it. It's all fandom and the only people who die in the end are fictional.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with everything except the cheating bit. It's not cheating to write about something you haven't done. That seems like a perplexing attitude when there are so many... ~Out There~ books.

Also, since most/all of my porn is male/male, I don't think my never having ever had sex/been kissed is really detrimental in any way. XD

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never been a man, and yet, I've written whole novels from a dude's point of view.

If we wanted to read about your sexual adventures that would be one thing, but we don't. We want to read about your characters sexual adventures. And since you'd be making those up anyway ... bravo on having a good imagination.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
hint: you don't need to have experienced something in order to write well about it

this is how normal people write about murders, drug addictions, etc etc
ext_145589: I prefer my boys fictional. (Default)

[identity profile] drabblewriter.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Me, too! ♥

[identity profile] sky-queen3.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Who cares, it's not cheating. As long as it's a good fic it doesn't matter if you've experienced it or not.

[identity profile] misandrie.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry anon, you didn't miss a thing!
The real stuff is far away from all the nice things smutt offers you!

[identity profile] glasgowsmiles.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, that's totally me as well.

I mean, I also read guides (both to 'romance writing' and to... you know, guides to *cough* active participation), on my way to writing *better* smut, but yeah.
