That's nice.

Sometimes I do that.
Sometimes I want to know who they are so I can find more of their work.
Sometimes I want to know more about them because I am fascinated by them.

It is all slightly different. It all works for me.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it depends on the source. Sometimes I want to know and sometimes it's better just enjoying the show/music/whatever on it's own.

I am a little wary now, since a few creators/actors/etc have turned out to be giant asses and now I can't properly enjoy their work without thinking about how much I dislike them as a person.

[identity profile] eibborn.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
As a general rule, I am the same. The only times when I'll look into a director or author or whatever are when I don't think I understand what statement they were trying to make, in which case I think it's prudent to learn the context they come from.

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
well, I agree in the sense that I don't need to approve/like/be interested in someone personally to enjoy their work.

So yeah, I can still read Kipling's books although he was a colonialist prick, listen to Bach's music although he was a shitty father and watch Polanski's movies although he is... whatever the fuck he is.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
For Polanski, I think the word you're looking for is rapist.

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
well, the situation is complicated from the few things I've heard and I do not know much about the whole story so I'd rather be careful with my words, you know?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-24 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
He got a a thirteen-year-old child drunk and forced her to have sex with him while she screamed "No!" and struggled to get away. I don't think you can possibly get anymore textbook rape than that.

[identity profile] softgraysky.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, Bach's parenting skills has never crossed my mind. Though I think the actions of living artists are of more consequence (to me, obviously) than the actions of an artist who lived and died three hundred years ago.

[identity profile] gereiheimer.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I agree to a certain extent, because judging people who lived centuries ago with our modern moral standards sounds quite ridiculous, you know?

[identity profile] softgraysky.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I agree, but I think it's more than that. Because Polanski - what he did, what he is doing, having run from the law, has consequences for our society today. The people that he hurt are still living, the laws that he ran from are still our laws. The whole Polanski mess has real effects beyond those who were involved - it says something about our society. So watching one of his films? Supporting him, being involved with his work, etc. touches on those issues.

Bad things that have happened in the past are still bad, even if they could be held to a different standard. But time sort of forgives it because it's no longer something we could condone but the event or behaviour or whatever that happened no longer is really hurting anyone. I'm sorry, this all sounded clearer in my head.

And I'm sorry for the tl;dr.

Thank you. If I stopped reading/watching/listening media because I disagreed with the opinions of their creators, I'd never be able to read/watch/listen to ANYTHING.

[identity profile] starsimpulse.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
what?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never given a shit about who writes what, and who performs in what, nor the details in their personal lives.

The only important thing is the story, and / or sound, and / or visuals in the product.

[identity profile] postitnotes.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I have to agree. I fell in love with the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. Only recently I found out that Card supported the NoM. I'm disappointed in his choice to support it, but at the same time I'm trying to put it back so I can go back to enjoying his works the way I did like them.

Ignorance is bliss and all that, but I'd rather judge based on your ability to write.

[identity profile] ashley marquardt (from livejournal.com) 2011-04-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
NoM

omnomnom?

...Sorry...

(But seriously, what's NoM? I tried googling it, but... ^^;

[identity profile] postitnotes.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I used to think the same thing actually - it's the National Order of Marriage. Basically an organization dedicated to being anti-gay marriage and preserving the sanctity of heterosexual marriages.

Agreed.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too!

Which is why I'll never be in bandom or any of those musical fandoms -- because it seems that the only thing they aren't interested in is the one thing I am: The lyrics, the music.

I can possibly get into an interview about the creator geeking about about the process of writing/creating. But I don't care about their personal life or what clothes they wear to an event.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The organization of this secret is really interesting. And I agree.

[identity profile] ecoerrante.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
This. I don't really care to know about the actors/directors/what have you beyond what they're role in the movie is. Sometimes, if I really like how they acted out their role, or I think I've seen them in something else, I'll look up what else they've done... but beyond that I really don't care.

[identity profile] berseker.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
high5, bro

(... and when I'm really in love with something, I avoid learning about authors/actors/etc, just in case they turn out to be assholes in real life or something.)

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
...Marry me?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-24 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason I really love the layout of this secret. It seems like it should be an arc number/plot device/lyric/chorus.

[identity profile] lipstickcrisis.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm exactly the same. Sometimes I care about who wrote/sang something or whatever so that I can find out what else they've done, but otherwise I actively do not want to know anything about them. I feel like that takes away from their work.

Some girl tried to talk to me about my favorite band recently and she was like, "isn't the lead singer so hot?" and I had to be like "uhh... I don't know actually, haha" because I never look into those things. It's better to not have literature/music/movies/etc. tainted or what-have-you by your impression of whoever made them, in my opinion.
