I don't know about this one, but Neil Gaiman doesn't do much for me in general. I always get the impression that there's a sort of ironic detachment in his writing that makes it hard for me to feel for the characters.

This is how I feel too. I read American Gods, Neverwhere, and Good Omens, and they all felt incredibly detached from the characters. There are some books where I've felt like I'm completely in the mind of a character... compared to that, his books make me feel like a moth continually battering away at a lightbulb but unable to really get close to the light (if that metaphor's understandable). Plus the books are so self-aware that it's hard to sincerely like them, since they feel like they have so little sincerity to offer me in the first place.
