I mean, I don't think it's OMG THE BEST EVAR, but I thought it was definitely a fun and entertaining read.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel somewhat the same. I don't quite hate it like you do but I haven't ever been able to like most of Neil Gaiman's stuff, so to me Good Omens is just an okay version of Discworld's normal (and much richer) fare.

I got bored half-way in and never finished it.

...did you not get the jokes and the references?
I recommended GO to a friend a few years ago. However she never saw the Omen or Rosemary's Baby, so any joke relating to that went over her head.

*shrugs*
To me the book is so enjoyable because after multiple reads you pick up on jokes. For example: It was only when I started reading it out loud, that I realize that Anathema Device is a pun on antikythera device.

I just read it for the first time and I thought it was amazeballs. But that's not everyone, I s'pose.

[identity profile] nabradia.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I kind of agree with you.

I love both most of Gaiman's books and the Discworld novels, but I completely see where you're coming from with the bland characters and kind of bleh writing opinion.

It was.... okay. I suppose.

I didn't hate it, sure, but it was a bit below par for both authors, I think.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it that much and don't get why so many people think it's OMGAMAZING, either. But...hey, everyone's got different opinions.

I did some research into what parts that Gaiman and Pratchett handled and was unsurprised to find that the parts that made the book less enjoyable for me (some of the humor, and ESPECIALLY the characters that were kids, the way they spoke was extremely annoying to read for me) were mainly Pratchett's. I really liked the horsemen, and those were Gaiman's territory. So. Apparently I'm not a Pratchett fan.

Humor is subjective and you probably didn't think it was funny. I thought it was cleverly devised, and those are my favorite books. I don't think there are many cleverly devised plots in books anymore.

[identity profile] atom-bunny.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read the book a few times and I've loved it every time, but that's just me. It somehow manages to make me smile like a loon every time.

[identity profile] mizzuks.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I really liked Crowley and Aziraphale, but found the majority of the other characters so boring.

I tried to like this book, but couldn't and still haven't finished it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I got the humor, and it was enjoyable, it just wasn't the amazing literary masterpiece everyone makes it out to be. Pratchett's work is tiresome to read and Gaiman falls into the habit of never delivering on what his books foreshadow and reusing the same few characters molds every book.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about this one, but Neil Gaiman doesn't do much for me in general. I always get the impression that there's a sort of ironic detachment in his writing that makes it hard for me to feel for the characters.

*way to be vague, anon*

I didn't like it either. I like Terry Pratchett but have never liked anything by Gaiman; the book as a whole felt like something that should have stayed an injoke or fun pastime between them rather than being published. Some of the humour definitely gave me the feeling I was missing something... I've written collaborative stories with friends before, and even though we all thought they were hilarious, I reckon someone else reading those would get that same feeling. It's not just that it's 'British humour' or anything, since I am British. I was also baffled by all the fangirling over the two main characters, since neither Pratchett nor Gaiman write (what I what consider) very deep characters, and this was no exception.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Neil Gaiman's stuff, and Good Omens (although my favorite was Neverwhere). But you shouldn't feel bad because you feel this way about a book. Hell, I think some so-called Great American Classics are total shit. So, you know, go read something that interests you :|d

I think some of it may have to do with the book just having been written by fandom-favorite authors (the whole, "Loving something just because [x] wrote/drew/said it").

I found the idea awesome, but the integration of Gaiman and Pratchett's writing styles was poorly executed. Gaiman also does much better at the short story, imo - his novels tend to drag (and I say this as a fan). Really, it was Aziraphale and Crowley that got me through it and I may have embarrassed myself by squeeing about them in front of Neil Gaiman himself, oh god.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree with you on all counts, but I won't go into a long rant as to why. But one thing I will say is that it brought up a lot of good points within religion that I've often thought myself. Or, at least, within Catholicism in the like, such as:

"Why make people inquisitive, and then put some forbidden fruit where they can see it with a big neon finger flashing on and off saying 'THIS IS IT!'?"

This book took me months to get through because while I really enjoyed the characters, I just.. couldn't care about anything else. I felt like there was a lot to be desired, but honestly that's how I feel about anything Gaiman writes that isn't Sandman. \: I don't get the hype.

[identity profile] tee-sama.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's say this again: "We don't have to like everything other people like. Other people don't have to like everything we like. Just because we don't like something doesn't make it shitty. Just because we like something doesn't make it flawless."

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried. I got about three pages in.

It doesn't help that the art on that particular cover looks EXACTLY like one of my friends.
