Grass is always greener.
Truth.

Artists are achingly self-deprecating and can be very competitive. "I'm not good enough" and laments of older artists envying the mind-blowing skills of younger (12-15) artists is common. And you kinda have to be like that if you want to get better.

Like an athlete, you have to devote time to practice and warm-ups if you don't want to make a stale drawing.

You guys have a much easier time finding a place to post your porn too. I have to sift through shady image hosts or use specific places like Y!gallery or other sites. I can post in my lj but it honestly doesn't get as much traffic as my DA.

You also spend a longer time with your audience who have to take the time to sit down and read while many artists just get a few seconds glance (most of the time anyway).

Pros and cons and all that though. I'm personally happy to be a fanartist but I would love to be a better storyteller 'specially since I fancy comics.

Grass, greener, definitely, because everything you've said, I've heard fanwriters say it too :P

I never thought of it that way. Grass is always greener, indeed!

Mostly I focus on the money-making aspect. As a good or unique artist, you can make some cash at conventions and do commissions. I know a good writer can sell their original fiction, but the market for that is much tighter.

I kind of wish I could favorite this comment. It's one thing to know abstractly that there are pros and cons for each side, it's another entirely when you can cite actual examples. Props.

Fan artists can make money off their work.

Fanfic writers can't.

Pros and cons, sure - but you guys get the more profitable pros.

Yeah but fanartists also spend money on their work. Even if it's drawn digitally, you'll still have had to paid for the tablet.

Computers aren't cheap, and legal pads and pens are hardly free. ;-)

(Anonymous) 2011-04-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh definitely! Computers and paper/traditional marking implements certainly aren't free, as artists can attest on account of needing those as well.

Though depending on the artist and their chosen medium, there's also other traditional art media which are never cheap (paints, decent brushes, cheap pads for practice as well as nicer pads for the finished work, light tables, inks, scanners), or digital (the much-coveted Cintiq which never runs for under $2000, or the still-pricey tablets if you can't afford that, various art software which definitely doesn't come with any computer unless you like the Paint program, and if you're going for something like Adobe CS5, that's going to need a computer with a better than average processor just so you can get the program up and running).

The ability of the fanartist to make money on their work at all may very well just be the thing to help them break even LOL
