maybe because e17 is a computer VN and wasn't released in NA?

[identity profile] tenel-ka.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I was gonna say. 999 is a lot more accessible to casual gamers than e17. I know if it was available, I would've definitely played it by now. But I have no easy way to play it. :(

[identity profile] eiviiaru.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to comment to ask "hey, like 999 but better? Sounds rad. Where can I get it?" Yeeeeeeah.

Apparently it was, according to Wikipedia.

But yeah, by being released for the DS, 999 was released to a market where people who wouldn't even consider themselves VN fans would hear about it, and I'm sure the good reception it got from magazines for its writing helped even more.

[identity profile] rubbersoul1967.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Also, isn't e17 a hell of a lot longer than 999? 999 took me about 3 days to finish (If I had used a guide for the puzzles I'm sure that time would be significantly cut) but I imagine e17 is like most VNs in that it has like 30-50 hours worth of reading. It's easier to pull out a DS out of your pocket and read instead of having to lug around a laptop everywhere.

E17 came here. I get the feeling it wasn't promoted here at ALL though. Aksys at least promoted 999.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 10:15 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be available years ago. Now you can only obtain it illegally.

[identity profile] wolfiemon.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Never even heard of that game. :P

*looks it up*

And it's being sold on Amazon for $199. ._.

[identity profile] wolfiemon.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh.. It looks like a really good game though. Now I'm sad. T_T

That's because the company that translated it went under, so, you know, no new copies. It's still available via, um, other channels if you're interested. (If you're not, sorry to have bothered you.)

You have to download it unless you're willing to spend hundreds of dollars. It went out of print years ago.

[identity profile] lipstickcrisis.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's fair to say 999 is a ripoff. They have similar premises in the group-trapped-on-a-boat aspect and some spoilers are strikingly similar as well, but other than that they're quite different. It is too bad that most people don't get the chance to play Ever 17. Thankfully I bought it years ago when it was still cheaper than $100.... I didn't realize it'd gotten so expensive. Yikes!

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know this game but the art in 999 looks ten times better. I mean, the other one could be a better game, but holy hell is that some generic ass art :/

Generic art =/= Generic storytelling. And the in-game art actually looks better than the art in the secret, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I agree the art looks much better, but you really can't compare the art of a game that came out 10 years ago to a game that came out months ago. Just saying.

[identity profile] cherry-tiger.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, if I had access to more games/VN like 999, I would. But as mentioned, 999 is the most accessible and it's easier to bring around a DS than a laptop. And it should be pretty obvious that THAT's the reason why 999 is more popular.

I think comparing 999 and Ever 17 is a bit too much though. It's like comparing Harry Potter with other books that uses witches and wizards. Sure there may be similarities in terms of certain characters and/or storylines, but they're still different stories all in all.

Can a writer rip off themselves? IIRC it's the same writer.

And 999 getting a much wider release doesn't hurt.

I love 999.

Which is why I wish I played Ever17... and hope the Xbox 360 remake comes here.

One cam dream.

I haven't played 999 yet so can't comment on its similarity or lack thereof, but I love Ever17! It's nice to see it... get mentioned at all.

Can't compare as I haven't played 999 but I gotta say aw, Ever17! This one started my love for VN type games. Hoping to continue Remember11 when I get my computer back.

FUCK YES EVER17 SECRET! WHOO! *does a little dance*

What can I say? I like Ever17.

[identity profile] zanah0ria.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever 17 secret!! :D:D

Anyway, I have played both Ever 17 and 999 and I have to agree that they are sort of similar! But I love the two games a lot, and it's not like you can't enjoy both. ;)
I played Ever 17 about 5 or 6 years ago, and I didn't went through all the bad endings (it would take me FOREVER), and I don't remember that much about the story (except that it made me cry like a baby for weeks), but here are some of the resemblances:

Besides the entire background story (spoilers obviously!);

- There's a female hacker in both games - check
- One of the characters has amnesia (Ever 17: Kid, 999: Seven) - check
- Two of the characters are revealed later to be brother and sister - check
- Two different storylines taking place at different times, and you have to interfere with one of the storylines to save the characters - check
- A crazy Pharmaceutical (999: Cradle, Ever 17: Lieblich) - check
- Crazy girl with pink hair (lol) - check
- LeMU: research facility; 999 ship: research facility
- Ever 17: cryogenic suspension, 999: Ice-9
- Ever 17: Blick Winkel, 999: morphic ressonance

Gaaaah... help me here?

[identity profile] fabula-umbrae.livejournal.com 2011-05-06 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Trying not to repeat what others have said but it seems like ever 17 doesn't have the puzzle aspect? I will probably play it eventually anyway but 999 had a combination of several things I like that don't show up often in games released in english. There's puzzle sections, a visual novel structure, bits of humor in an honestly scary situatio, and it's for a console I can carry with me that gives the option of playing for 10 minutes or several hours depending on my mood. I like visual novel games. But having one with additional elements was very appealing.
