I love both Rose and River equally. (Donna is my current-gen favorite hands down, but that's neither here nor there). I really dislike the sheer amount of River Song hate running rampant in WHO-Fandom; ever since she first showed up in "Silence in the Library." No one even knows for sure who she will end up being, and yet, so many people have already decided: "I hate River Song! She's such a Mary-sue!" Ugh. Cry Moar Fanbrats.

YES THIS. SO MUCH! I understand why some people might be a bit frustrated over not knowing who River is (though I think that's part of the fun) but is that really a reason to hate her? Especially when so many of her so-called 'Mary Sue' traits are things she has in common with the Doctor! Yet she gets bashed for it because she's not a man she's just a recurring character.

It is not because she's not a man. It's because we've been given absolutely no explanation for her knowing the things she does and being amazing at everything. Not only that, but better than the Doctor at things that she has no business being better at. If she were a Time Lady, then fine, I might be able to let some of it slide, but we've been given no indication that she's anything other than human.

I'm actually pretty surprised that you insinuated that people who don't like River are misogynistic, whether subconsciously or not. What about River is supposed to be empowering? She's a hollow character whose main motivation is her love interest. She says herself that she lives for the days she meets the Doctor. I thought the whole point of strong female characters was characters that have lives and motivations outside of the main male characters, not characters who have an in-your-face attitude, look good shooting a gun, and just happen to be female-shaped.
