I really like River Song, and I liked Rose Tyler in season one. It's season two and on that I'm not such a huge fan of Rose.
I don't particularly care if either of them were with the Doctor, but at the moment I prefer River. That's because River's still a mystery. Having said that, though, I honestly don't like the idea of the Doctor "being with" anyone.
I like the Doctor single, just having adventures without the thought of him hooking up with any of his companions.

I loved Rose with Nine, but I sort of hated her with Ten. I'm don't think that was really Rose's fault, though.

I really don't think Rose is Sue-ish at all. She's pretty much introduced as a school drop-out that has no direction to her life or goals. She fucks up. She's irrational sometimes. She "saves the day" twice ("Rose" and "Bad Wolf"). I think people only call her a Sue because Ten loved her so much, which I think is just anti-romantic!Doctor people being butthurt. She may not have be "The Doctor's" true love but she was Ten's. He loved her. People fall in love. So what? He lost her tragically and he pined. People pine. So what? Get over it already.

River's story is completely tied up in the Doctor's. It has been since we met her. Doesn't it make sense that the show is going to revolve around her a bit in the season that we finally find out who she is? Besides, hating her because the show is revolving around her now is like hating the Master because the show revolved around him for a while. She's a big part of the story.

That's nonsense. Rose was developed the way most companions are, River showed up and we were supposed to accept her as awesome before she did anything awesome. Plus, she has this sooper sekrit relationship with The Doctor, as opposed to Rose's which, again, developed throughout her appearance in the series. So to say you have to like or hate both of them is nonsense, since they're different characters. And even things like, "they're The Doctor's love interests" doesn't work, since their "love interest" status was developed in two different ways.

And I say this as someone who doesn't like either of them much, for different reasons.

Eh, I see what you're trying to say, OP, and I mostly agree. I don't think people have to like both of them, but so many of the arguments people use against one can apply in some way to the other as well.

Gonna have to ask the question posted by the first anon up there: What if we don't like Rose for different reasons? Personally, I really don't like Rose that much though I wouldn't call her a Mary Sue. She has many realistic flaws and I can appreciate her as a full 3 dimensional character. It just so happens that she just the sort of character I don't. So, yeah. Don't like Rose, but I don't think she's a Mary Sue.

As for River, well... I'm on the fence about River honestly. Sometimes she just irritates me and other times, she seems incredibly interesting to me.

Certainly, there can be some hypocrisy, there, and I agree that it's annoying if someone holds a double standard. But I also think there's a lot of subjectivity. The difference between a Mary Sue and an awesome character is really just execution and your feelings about the character. It can be perfectly valid to dislike one character's romantic relationship with the Doctor but love the other's, for example.

Because their stories have been written along exactly the same lines and their personalities are exactly the same and they interact with the Doctor in exactly the same ways.

Oh, wait.

I understand if you're talking about people who say "I don't like Rose/River because I don't like anyone being a love interest for the Doctor" and then turn around and ship the other pairing. But if you're talking about people who say "I don't like Rose/River because I don't like her being a love interest for the Doctor"... Apples and oranges, OP.

River & Rose ARE NOT Mary Sue's. 90% of the female characters who are called 'Mary Sues' are NOT Mary Sues. Can we just get rid of that term already?!

I'm not going to judge someone for liking or not liking either of these women but I will judge people who call either of them a 'Mary Sue' when you've got THE DOCTOR standing right there!

I love both Rose and River equally. (Donna is my current-gen favorite hands down, but that's neither here nor there). I really dislike the sheer amount of River Song hate running rampant in WHO-Fandom; ever since she first showed up in "Silence in the Library." No one even knows for sure who she will end up being, and yet, so many people have already decided: "I hate River Song! She's such a Mary-sue!" Ugh. Cry Moar Fanbrats.

I adored River from her first appearance, because she's just the type of character I really love. Which, judging by this thread, is an extremely unpopular opinion. But then, my favorite new show companions go, in order, River Song, Lady Christina de Souza, Donna Noble, Martha Jones, Amy Pond, Rose Tyler, Rory Williams.

Adding another note to this, off to the void of the internet to be ignored forever:

I don't like River AS MUCH for a variety of reasons. (I really don't dislike her, most of the time, she... honestly kinda bores me a bit.) Among these reasons is, she seems so changed, to me, from the first time we meet her to the second. I'm still not sure how she recognized Ten when... that was the first and only time she ever saw him, wasn't it? And she didn't see the TARDIS or anything... and... :x Mostly, I can see that she has potential, but I'm kinda sick of them flirting with character development but trying so hard to keep her so mysterious. Just tell me who she is already! >:I

Where, with Rose, you could see her growing as a character in almost every single episode. Not just learning more about her, but she was growing. Changing. Evolving. As a person. And it kinda gives me a sense of hope that someone as common as she was could be someone so great, so full of everything that The Doctor is, after traveling with him for such a relatively short time.

Anyway. Just because someone hates, say, Rose for taking over the show and getting their Doctor... doesn't mean that they can't appreciate River despite her having so many of the came characteristics. Because River's personality might make these traits more believable or more likely for said person. Or, as with me, I find these traits more immersing and endearing in Rose because of how common she was.

tl;dr: I don't hate either. But I freaking LOVE Rose. River's boring and one-dimensional. (Somehow.)

Guys, word of warning. Never play the Doctor Who f!s drinking game. You know, the one where you take a shot every time someone says the words "Mary Sue".

I did it last night and just woke up on a bench in Mexico with a tatoo declaring my love to a guy called Rusty. O_o
