Don't you see? The Doctor is a man, I mean, protagonist right?, so he is allowed to be perfect. But of course a woman who is a protagonist and almost perfect is a Canon Sue. See? It is pretty simple.

(fucking double standards...)

Can someone please clarify for me what a Mary Sue is? I was told it means a perfectly perfect character with no balancing flaws or development. I dont see how The Doctor could be that, or Rose really. With the Doctor, you just need to see the scene from An Unearthly Child where he nearly bludgeons a wounded caveman to death to see how much he's changed. We're not meant to see the Doctor as perfect - hes an alien and we've seen how he can turn from kind to menacing on a six pence in almost every incarnation. Thats what makes him interesting IMO.

And while Im not a huge Rose fan; I can see how she changed from a working class girl with no ambition to "Rose Tyler - defender of the Earth", at least in her Series 1 arc.

I can sort of get how River fits it but then its hard to tell because we're seeing it backwards.

I really can't explain it because I don't understand anymore what a Mary-Sue is. The term is so over used, that it has lost all real meaning.

I don't think the Doctor is perfect, but some people claim he is, just because he is the protagonist (since you know, all heroes/protagonist are pefect or something like that).

Men can get away with a lot shit. They can have a wider range of personality traits or skills that, if present in a woman, automatically makes them "Mary-Sues" in the eyes of some people.

They were having a really interesting discussion about the subject over here:

I admit, at this point I tend to stay away from most histories focused around men, or even het. Nowadays, I just want to read about women. Maybe I'm overcompensating, but frankly, I don't care.

*stories (got my spanish and english mixed!)

*sighs* Despite knowing this, I still want to believe fandom is better than these shitty double-standards and that there might be some other reason why they love the Doctor but hate some of the female characters. It's sad and rage-inducing that it usually comes down to whether or not someone has a penis.

[identity profile] sophiesenoo.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
I know is rage inducing. I have lost all fate in fandom a long time ago :( that is why I tend to stay in my femslash corner.

[identity profile] mfirefly10.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Femslash corners FTW!!!

If I didn't have a large number of het/poly ships as well, I'd never leave the femslashy side of fandom.

If it makes you feel any better, I think of some male characters as Sues as well. But yeah the double standards are annoying.
