I don't like River AS MUCH for a variety of reasons. (I really don't dislike her, most of the time, she... honestly kinda bores me a bit.) Among these reasons is, she seems so changed, to me, from the first time we meet her to the second. I'm still not sure how she recognized Ten when... that was the first and only time she ever saw him, wasn't it? And she didn't see the TARDIS or anything... and... :x Mostly, I can see that she has potential, but I'm kinda sick of them flirting with character development but trying so hard to keep her so mysterious. Just tell me who she is already! >:I
Where, with Rose, you could see her growing as a character in almost every single episode. Not just learning more about her, but she was growing. Changing. Evolving. As a person. And it kinda gives me a sense of hope that someone as common as she was could be someone so great, so full of everything that The Doctor is, after traveling with him for such a relatively short time.
Anyway. Just because someone hates, say, Rose for taking over the show and getting their Doctor... doesn't mean that they can't appreciate River despite her having so many of the came characteristics. Because River's personality might make these traits more believable or more likely for said person. Or, as with me, I find these traits more immersing and endearing in Rose because of how common she was.
tl;dr: I don't hate either. But I freaking LOVE Rose. River's boring and one-dimensional. (Somehow.)
