I didn't mind Rose, but I HATE River Song. Not because she's the Doctors love interest, but because there doesn't seem to be much to the character besides "Young Han Solo as a woman", at least in S5 River. I love her in "Silence in the Library", but I think she should have remained there.

Also, frankly? The actress is TOO OLD to pull this part off. You can come at me with the ageist card, but she looks VISIBLY older than she did in The Library episodes, where she is supposed to be 'older, mature, mellowed out River'. It bugs me that the younger version of the character looks so much older than the version we see at the end of her life. And the costume choices don't help - the makeup they're using makes every wrinkle on her face stand out, she looks cracked and aged. Her Han Solo pants with th ebelt make her hips look a million miles wide. I mean seriously, everything they've done screams 'older person we've tried very hard to make look younger but failed'.

They should have gotten a DIFFERENT actress. As it is right now, this giant glaring issue really breaks my ability to suspend disbelief and pulls me out of the moment.

Of course, truth is I love 11 as a Doctor, and his companions, but S5 was one of the weakest writing-wise, and ended up betraying its ONE rule that got drilled in from seasons 1-4 - don't go back in your own personal timeline. I'm only, eh, MILDLY excited for S6.

Also, don't pile on people for not liking that the Doctor is given a love interest. There's nearly 40 years of canon before this that essentially establishes him as asexual, at least in regards to humans. His only viable 'love interest' was Romana and she left. You can't blame people who have 40 years of this character behind them to suddenly be elated that he's given a twee love interest in order to draw in the more fannish shippers and ficcers.

I love both Old and New Who, but it's a bit unfair to get pissy at fans who are justifiably irritated that such a large change occurred in order to garner more fans.

(and again, please don't misunderstand - I like that they give The Doctor love interests, personally, but I just entirely understand when people who have liked this character since the 70's might be irritated since it was so established he wasn't so into boning humans)

THIS. She's supposed to get younger, not older, and yet...

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK GOD it's not just me. I feel like it's so obvious and weird that she's far too old for this character, but no one ever says it, I think out of fear of being called out. There's this underlying fear that someone will think it has to do with 'I think mature women are ugly' rather than 'this beautiful but mature woman cannot pull off this role of someone much much younger', and even worse the way they style her makes her look older and crackier than she looks naturally.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? When I say think that she's too old for the role, I mean exactly that. I don't meant that she's ugly. She's a beautiful woman but she's not as young as she's supposed to be in DW and it shows.

I also agree with you re: her clothes & make-up. I guess they're trying to make her like a female James Bond (seductive criminal/secret agent) or Indiana Jones (badass adventurer), but they could do that by giving her clothes that flatter her. It's like they had this mental image of what a character like that should wear, and then failed to consider who's wearing the clothes IRL.

Yeah, the BBC are so inconsiderate for not inventing a time-machine so Kingston could look young enough not to offend your misogynistic sensibilities. And, yeah, you do sound like you have a problem with older women and it's gross.

lololol troll

or a SJ Warrior who sees misogyny and age-ism even in comments and places they aren't present

DA

Looks like you're the one trolling, or you're too stupid to understand how misogyny and ageism work. Maybe lurk more until you learn how not to look quite so clueless, okay?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

saying that a woman is too old to play a certain (1) role on TV =/= ageism or misogyny

op said that she's too old to play her younger self. that is, in fact, quite logical. like, for example, sean connery would be too old to play a young james bond and matt smith would make a rather awful toddler!doctor for what I hope are obvious reasons.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Connery is in his seventies, and played Bond some forty years ago. Smith is almost thirty, it's been over two decades since he was a toddler. Kingston is only two years older now than she was in the Library episodes and yet she is now "too old" to play the same character, and you don't see how this has a misogynistic subtext?

How many women in middle-age are there in action/adventure roles on British television? How often are women criticised for not being young enough, thin enough or pretty enough? In and of itself, this may not be a problematic statement, but it promotes a view that is generally used to attack, condemn and control women.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean she was only two years older when she first reappeared in Doctor Who. I trust you can see the problem in comparing men in decades, and women in a couple of years here?

Matt Smith played a Doctor two hundred years older in Impossible Astronaut. When he plays the Doctor next year, he'll look older then than he does now in Impossible Astronaut. Will the same poster be complaining that continuity is ruined for the Doctor? I doubt it. Women are held to higher standards, and that is misogynistic.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But isn't Kingston's character supposed to get younger with each passing episode? As in, she should look younger, not older or exactly the same.

When a character is getting younger and still played by the same actor who, in turn, is growing older, pointing out that it's something of a problem isn't misogyny even if the actor is a woman.

I have no idea, DW is the only British action/adventure I follow. Too often, but that's not what was discussed here.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
This is one of those times when we're just going to have to accept the limitations of reality. There is no way for the BBC to actually make Kingston age backwards.

The anon has a point about Matt Smith though. I doubt anyone's going to be complaining next year or the year after because the 'old' Doctor in the season opener looks younger than the current Doctor, who's meant to be several hundred years younger.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's possible that they have to change the actor at some point just to make it believable. Suspension of disbelief has its limits, too. I think it'd be a pity because I like Kingston as an actor and it'd be odd to see someone else play an adult River.

If it's any consolation, I will. "Little" details like that always bug me so much and it's why I tend to dislike the strictly timey-whimey stuff.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how an entirely different person playing the part is more realisitic than Kingston looking pretty much the same.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
River's age actually works very well for me - in the Library, she's out of prison. She's done her penance. She has a job she loves with colleagues she enjoys, and she is, simply, a lighter person than she with Eleven. She's already fought her battles and she's let go. She is, despite being physically older, mentally a younger, lighter person. And that shows.

Also, on a personal note, River in seasons five and six is hot like burning and is the only character on Doctor Who so far that I've actually wanted to fuck. Guh. Well, okay, her and Lady Christina de Souza. Of course, as a lesbian, they're not exactly catering to me in the first place, so.
