In my experience the average age for fans differs depending on the fandom. I've been in fandoms where the overwhelming majority were teenagers, where the overwhelming majority were college-aged, and even (especially video game fandoms, as the average gamer is 35) fandoms where the majority are pushing 30.

There is no "right" age for fandom, though, even for these - if you're from an age group outside the norm, you're still going to bring a new and refreshing perspective to the fandom as a whole.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree here - fandom average age will vary by fandom.

I count myself lucky and everyone I've found so far is cool with people no matter what their ages are, so it's never been a worry of mine.

Also, I kind of love large age differences because then there can be a sort of mentor-relationship going on. I have some friends who are 25 years older than I am, and have been great for talking about RL things I might not feel comfortable talking to my parents or aunts and uncles yet, and they have RL experience to go off of.

So I say don't worry. ♥

This. I was in a fandom for a long time where a lot of fans were in their 30s and 40s, and even the younger fans I was friends with tended to be my age or older. Now, I'm getting into another fandom, and have been a bit surprised at the number of people around my age and a little younger (that is, "college" aged).

I like having people in fandom who are a different age than me, though. I don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" age.

[identity profile] fishnetmom.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 37 (almost mistyped as 367, feels like it) and I'm the third oldest person I met in fandom. Whatever.

I've just labeled myself as the fanmom for my fandom and fly with it.

I know how you feel -.- Everyone in my favorite fandom seems to be about 14-16, I always feel kind of awkward and OLD at con photoshoots, being 23

I get your point. I think people are going to hone in on your statement about "being the right age", but I get how annoying it is to be younger than everyone else, and suddenly ancient compared to everyone else in fandom.

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on where you hang out in what fandom. I'm around that age, most of the people I know are around that age as well. But I know there are a lot of younger people out there. Just as I know quite a few people who are a good twenty years older than me.

To sum it up, there is no right age. There is no wrong age. Fandom is for everybody.

I'm a lot older than 30. Fandom is for all ages, I've found.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. I'm 23, but I feel like I'm seeing younger and younger people in fandom(s) and around the internet in general. Like, everyone who has a Tumblr seems to be younger than I am. O___o It's weird. But it's not bad! Doesn't mean you can't have fun meeting people! No such thing as a "right" age.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
My fandom friends are both older and younger than me -- some of them considerably younger -- and it's kind of fun, because we've all got something to give each other that way.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel. I lied about my age when I was too young (entering 18+ groups at age 13), but I feel extra uncomfortable now in certain fandoms where I feel too old. It's mostly just bandom. I'm not only older than most of the fans (I've been at concerts where the fans on either side of me were literally my age combined), I'm also older than half of the people in the bands. It's awkward.

But it definitely varies. I feel age appropriate in most of my fandoms.

I've been at cons with people over 60. And they were fucking awesome. There is no right age for fandom. There is an age where things are considered "not socially acceptable" but as we well know, society can be VERY VERY wrong about what's acceptable. So as long as you aren't hurting anyone, fuck 'em.

[identity profile] curls.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've met the most amazing people of all ages through fandom. Many of whom I've been friends with for years.

Try not to think of age as a hindrance. After all, it's just the year you were born. Think of your fandom as something wonderful that brings people together despite age (or religion or where they live or what they do for a living, etc.).

Fandom can bring the most unlikely people together.

I think those of who were in our late teens in the late 90s were just at an awkward age for the internet. We were at the tailend of the newsgroups/mailing list generation, but before the explosion of social networking sites. And because of that, we'll always be in a weird place online, if we were online regularly in our teens, because we "grew up" in a very different internet than people even 2-3 years younger than us.

The age of the canon will have some bearing on it. Most Harry Potter fans are starting to "age out", the Ben-10 ones may still be young.

The Professionals and Starsky/Hutchers will be pretty old school.

Megamind fandom barely has anybody under 18 o_o Most of our folks are in the 20-35 range, but we do have folks up to their late 50s actively participating.

Keep searching, anon!

[identity profile] phoenix-tears89.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
This could just be me, but I get the impression that people are getting access to fandom younger and younger. I mean, I'm only 21, but I'm still surprised when I see someone online who's under 16 or so, as I'd never even heard of the concept before then (and wasn't really able to get involved until I got my own computer at 18).

I think the rise in social networking sites are also a big factor-- they've created a kind of "tipping point"(Gladwell, anyone?) for younger kids to get an internet presence, and from there to get into fandom. Even though it seems like facebook has been around forever, it's really only been a few years, and it only became available for people not in college in, I believe, 2006. (I know there were plenty of networking sites before then, but I don't think they were quite so mainstream. I could be wrong, though.)

It depends on the fandom. I've had it go both ways.

I tried to get into the LARP fandom (NERO, to be exact) when I was 17 and found that, to my surprise, I was only one of two (out of 40) people at my local chapter under the age of 18. This ended up being one of the major reasons I never stuck around in the fandom - I was constantly talked down to like a retarded puppy both in and out of character.

On the other hand, I'm also a rather rabid fan of the Warcraft fandom, which seems to be the perfect age for me - almost the entirety of my 104 account guild is 18-24ish. We have a couple of people over (our oldest member is 36) but nobody younger (18+ guild).

[identity profile] puddinchan.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
I joined a small Digimon fandom at 9 when most of the people were 15-25. I did not fit in and got picked on like nobody's business. In fact, I'm glad the forum went down, cause they were elitists who seemed to think I should "respect my elders" by, uh... not treating them the same as I treat everyone else.

I mean, with a couple-of-weeks-off-retirement Dad, I'm the one who should be lecturing people about respecting their elders.

I understand and sympathize. Many fandoms have averaged younger fans because material is so much easier and cheaper to access/obtain than before. Those fans who are in their mid-30's and older started off in far different circumstances. There were more older fans then (in comparison) because it used to cost more to get a hold of materials or even to share--anyone remember sending video-tapes through the mail b/c the internet didn't have the speed or capacity to distribute larger files?

The ratio is even further skewed towards younger fans because as jobs and family obligations take up more time, a lot of older folks put fandom on the back-burner. That hasn't changed, but because so many younger fans have come into all kinds of fandoms, the ratio of older/younger fans is much different than it was in the 1990's, or 80's or 70's.

Not saying that the influx of younger fans (and all the opportunities that faster, cheaper internet has allowed) is a bad thing! By no means! But it has changed fandom a great deal.

There may be "No right age for fandom", but it is awkward when you go to a convention and are constantly mistaken for someone's mom. :-P

At 30 I'm the oldest person in most of my RP groups. I kind of take the position as the big sister. I'm cool with it as long as they're cool with me.
