[Glee]

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Don't listen to the Glee fandom anon. Like at all. Although there are some pockets of awesome, on a whole this fandom seems to be full of asshats. I personally don't think she's particularly ugly, just in need of a new wardrobe.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Off-topic a bit, but I've come to have a bit more respect for Klaine shippers after seeing the way many of them handled that SpoilerTV poll. But Glee fandom as a whole scares the fucking crap out of me, and is one of the main reasons I won't touch the show with a 10 foot pole.

Then be a Quinn. Do what she did and pull a little diet and work out, maybe get contacts. Dress to flatter yourself. Instead of complaining, do something.

God, no kidding. Most of this fandom has completely missed the theme of acceptance.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
watching that episode, I felt the same way and than I realized that this is why i dislike Quinn as a character, she is a charade and shade of herself. She is the porcelain doll that will crack as the pressure gets tough.

thus, screw what people say about that episode and the whole lucy/quinn thing since we have too many quinns in the world that make nothing of themselves after high school but it is the lucy's of the world that make it a bit special.

[identity profile] homette.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
fuckin right on

[identity profile] passivedreamer.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well. Put. Very well put.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think she'd look bad at all if she ditched the 70s glasses and the pigtails and took off the sweater/sweatervest. That's just me though.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not a Glee fan, but I keep seeing this picture end up everywhere, and all I can think is... I don't think she's ugly at all. I mean, she could definitely be a fair bit more attractive if she swapped the glasses and hair style for something more flattering, but ugly? No, I don't think so.

Anon should remember that about 2/3 of the people in this world are made up of insecure assholes who put other people down to feel good about themselves. If you're really worried about people not liking you because of things so superficial, then you're not hanging around with the right crowd. As cliche as it sounds, beauty is more important on an internal level; your real friends won't give a shit about how you look if they really care.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
The good news is you CAN be a Quinn though. Well, you won't look like Dianna Agron, of course, but you can work on yourself. And with that, you will be more confident, and through confidence you will be more attractive. Really, trust me on that one. And you do not have to be skinny...but there are ways to control acne, try to see a dermatologist if you can...hair, clothes, make-up...I can't stress how much they can help a person look good and in extention, feel good.

So no, you might not be a super model, but you can bring out your natural assets and be transform yourself into a more beautiful you..

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
I like your comment. Very much.
Not harsch and realistic.
I came in terms with my looks when someone told me how to look prettier, which was not "make efforts ! go to the gym ! have a diet ! don't be so lazy !" No, it was words like yours. Simple.

[identity profile] demishock.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry you've been made to feel bad about yourself, OP. I've been fortunate enough to not have the weight issue to contend with, but I've had severe acne since my early teens (I'm 24 now, and while birth control pills cut it back significantly, it's still a problem I have), so I can certainly relate on that front. I've also worn glasses about the same size as the ones Lucy's got on in that pic since I was in elementary school, and that's been a source of criticism as well (apparently they're "too big for [my] face"; how dare I choose peripheral vision and comfort over fashion?!).

I think the internet is like that for a lot of people, though. People get to know each other for the way they think and act first rather than how they look, and I think it's awesome. For what it's worth, I don't think Lucy's ugly. Yes, even dressed as she is. I don't think Quinn is, either, but I think she's a pretty ugly PERSON, as far as her actions are concerned. I don't think she's irredeemable, but she needs to get over herself and stop treating people like crap. (That goes for a lot of the Glee characters, but anyway.)

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
In the end, (most?) fandom people are still superficial and insecure, even if many of them come from a more "outcast" background.

For example, we get told that this picture is ugly by the show- it's not.
It lacks "effort", so to speak, to look more like a conservative beauty.
Why would people even MIND that she's not pretty in that sense?

In my opinion, it's a) because they judge a person's worth by their look
(they don't know better yet) and b) because they apply the same beauty standards to themselves. If somebody doesn't conform to it, it causes disconcertment in them.

sorry for incorrect English

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as others have said, OP. Lucy isn't ugly. Dressed badly, yes. Ugly, no. Let her hair down and put her in nice clothes, she'd be lovely.

I also wish people (Glee, other people) wouldn't act like bracers for teeth = ugly. It's only temporary and half the time for health :/

I say that because I have an overbite that I am incredibly self conscious about, but school bullies made me fear bracers since they teased people more with those than my "bunny teeth". Now I'm an adult who knows logically they're okay, but I am STILL afraid of being made fun of if I decided to get bracers.

oho anon secret. Woops.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I relate to you so much, anon =/ I never got braces as a child, partially because of my own fears regarding them and how my peers would treat me over it. (I'd already spent a good chunk of time being teased over my glasses; didn't want to add more ammunition to their arsenal.)
But now, as an adult, I honestly wish I'd just suffered through it and gotten them as a child. I'm so self-conscious about my teeth. And, like you, I know it would be okay to get the braces now, but the fear (among financial reasons) keeps me from honestly considering it.

*hugs*

Not secret related, but if you're worried about being made fun of and really do want to fix your teeth, try looking into invisalign. They cost the same as traditional braces, but they have the added benefit of being removable (so you don't need to curtail what you eat, and you can brush your teeth normally), but of also being pretty much invisible.

I finally decided to, among other minor oddities, close the gap between my two front teeth a couple years ago. You do have to get molds of your teeth done, which, for someone who has a really strong gag reflux, was not fun. However, once that's done, you only have to go to the Orthodontics every 6 weeks to get new trays. No painful wire adjustments or anything. Plus absolutely no one ever knew I was wearing them.

Just throwing that out there.

I agree with what you've said here. And I totally feel you on the overbite thing - I have a class III overbite that was surgically corrected about 4 weeks ago. I had to wear braces for a year beforehand (I'm 21, and work part time/study full time so I was apprehensive) and I have to keep them on until Christmas at least. Like you, I was worried about having braces while I was at school because everyone who had them copped teasing. But I wish I'd had it done back then, because it would've fixed my mouth issues!

Honestly, since I got them on, I feel 10x more confident than I did before. Maybe because I'm looking after my teeth now, who knows. Nobody ever comments on them (except my sister when we're fighting...but SIBLINGS, amirite?). I've had more interest in me dating-wise SINCE I've had them on than I did previously! I think glasses/braces aren't a big deal in the adult world. I hope you can overcome your fear and get something done about it. :(

society is so pathetic. you complain about how people treat you, yet you want to buy into all that shit so you can be what they want you to be. dumb. just plain dumb.

Don't worry anon. There are assholes everywhere who'll hate you for the most petty things. "You're fat." "You're a bitch." "You're a slut." "You're ugly." Blah, blah, bah, ad nauseum.

The wonderful thing is: You don't have to listen to them. Yeah, it fucking hurts getting insulted...especially over things you can't help. But if you focus on the people who like you for who you are, you'll feel a hell of a lot better. Don't give the asshats the time of day. Because they certainly aren't giving it to you.

[identity profile] glasgowsmiles.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs you*

I used to be Lucy.

I am by no means Quinn today, nor do I want to be, but at my best, I'm a Mercedes. I'm not a small girl and I'll never be a small girl, but I'm going to go out and be the fiercest me I can be, and anyone who can't love me for it is not worth my time.

I won't lie, it took me most of my life to get to that. But when I'm there, it's a really good place to be. And I don't know who you are, or if we even hang out in any of the same fandoms, or if we're in remotely the same part of the world, but I love you right now, and I really want you to know that you should never have to change for anybody but yourself.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom has always been about worshipping hot people (/robots/ponies/whatever).

If you want to be worshipped, then your looks might be a problem. If you want pals with whom you can worship other hot people, it's less of a problem.

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've learned that once you get out into "the real world" people are much nicer. It's the high school age people who are the worst.

[identity profile] nursethalia.livejournal.com 2011-05-26 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...are you me, anon?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Long ago when I used to be active in a fandom - I met a lot of different people. After a couple of meetings we became a very close circle of friends. Some of them were pretty, some - average, some - really fat. No matter how they looked I LOVED them, because we had lots i common, we were interested in each other.. That's what makes real friends, anon. So don't be afraid. Fandom is one of a few places where people are really gonna like you because of who you are because they are the same in some aspects. Good luck =)
