Actually, I'm pretty sure Atlas and P-Body are supposed to be genderless, or more like they aren't supposed to b e any specific gender canon-wise. So you can interpret what they are on your own. Most common SEEMS to be with Atlas as male and P-Body as female, but I've seen some people have them both as guys, both as girls, or P-Body as male and Atlas as female. I'm pretty sure that's why Valve didn't decide for us, so they could be whatever the fans want~

So yeah, it's not weird, Anon! :D If you see it that way, that's the whole idea!

Not really. Valve specifically said that Atlas was designed with male traits in mind: deeper voicer, bulky, broad "shoulders", his walking pattern. Where as P-Body was designed with female traits in mind: slender, narrower, higher pitched voice and curvy "hips".

"Traits" being the keyword here, dear Anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Traits. I never said they were specifically male or female, because they are robots. But they were not designed to look genderless, they were intentionally designed to mimic an exaggerated male and female form.

Yeah, but to what extent? When I first saw them, I thought of my close friend and I (we are both girls) - I'm short and rount like ATLAS and she's tall and slender like P-Body. I never found anything gender-defining about them and both could be either gender or entirely genderless.

late, I lost interest in this thread (blame not getting notifs when anon) but...

did you not read my post at all? You didn't find anything gender defining because you said yourself you were projecting yourselves onto them. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's part of the immersion of the game. But when you separate yourself from the individual character, you'll find several gender defining things about them.

Atlas has, if you were to move his core higher up, would show as having very broad shoulders. His whole body, except for the core, his "head", is box shaped. His robotic noises are very deep to the range one would typically identify as male. He runs (as seen in the CO-OP trailer) in a way that is wide-set and seems to be centered in his lower legs and feet. It's a heavy run, reminiscent of a typical solider. All of these things come together to send signals to the human player that Atlas is designed to look MALE.

P-body has a curvacious, narrower design. Her "voice" is higher pitched in comparison to Atlas, and P-body is given "thighs", that connect to her core to mimic hips, which is a easily identifiable signal of a female. Her "shoulders" are narrower, her feet are smaller and less broad than Atlas', and she runs in a way that is centered in the hips. When you watch her run in slow motion, you see that she keeps her legs closer together, and that there's a slight shaking of the "hips" in her run, again typical female traits.

Just because you didn't notice it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

I see them as genderless robots, still, I used "projection" to explain how one could see them both as female instead of a male and a female, as a lot of people seem to see them.

I did notice those differences, thank you very much, but you seem to be glued onto the idea ATLAS is more male and P-Body is more female. I've met males with high-pitched voices and females with deep voices. Voices mean nothing when it comes to robots and I've even seen theories about GLaDOS being male that held water until Portal 2 came out. Obviously, people picked different "signals" from their movements and design, so perhaps you're not noticing something that other people are.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-26 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I see them as genderless robots as well, but designed to look a certain way that sends off gendered signals. And while you can harp that not everyone fits the gender mold, you forget one thing-- they were not born, they were made. Either by GLaDOS in canon, or Valve in the real world. Meaning there was an expressed design for both of them to look the way they do. And I do think the intention was to spark the part of the brain that identifies that "males look like this, females look like this".

In these robots it doesn't matter, because they have no real gender and are simply made to mimic and exaggerate these human features. That's why P-body is taller, even though human females are typically shorter, because it's the slender female form exaggerated. Atlas is squat because he's a boxy, male, almost neanderthal form, taken to an extreme.

Though, due to the absence of several other things what differentiate a male and female, such as clear human faces, so a lot of folks don't pick up on it, or even ignore it.

I personally, think the signals they give off are very clear, but like you said, a lot of people are different.

To cement my point, I have taken this screen grab, (http://i.imgur.com/bdwFs.jpg) traced over it, and added circles representing human heads: http://i.imgur.com/cOuta.png

Can you see it now?
