there has always been a certain percentage of crazy in the fandom microcosm. people were self-diagnosing, soulbonding and stalking actors long before 28.8k connections. but the internet does make it easier for those people to clump together and strengthen their craziness, kind of like folie a deux on a massive scale.

also I'm not seeing anything inflammatory about the OP's comment on Asperger's. it looks like s/he is saying that it's a valid condition (because it is), but when people start dumbing it down and making it ~internet trendy~, it becomes less of a valid condition and more like a fun sticker you can apply to yourself. there's no shame at all in having Asperger's, but like any other psychological issue, it takes a lot of effort for someone with it to be aware of their limitations and continually work on keeping the more disruptive aspects in check. when you have a subculture of people telling you it's everyone else's fault that they can't handle your disorder - the "neurotypicals" are oppressing you and who gives a fuck about them anyway - that is a really bad thing. this applies equally to a lot of other internet subcultures based around psychological stuff. "positive feedback loop" in this sense is a pretty apt description.

ugh, tl;dr

I agree with your views on the OP's Asperger's comment. My boyfriend and I both suspect I have Asperger's, and it really explains a lot of my odder quirks that don't seem to make any sense (like my aversion to food texture and being very anxious about food touching on the plate). I just don't like admitting it because of how suddenly everyone on the internet has self-diagnosed themselves with Asperger's and I don't want to be lumped in with them. I'm not trying to be ~internet trendy~ or a special snowflake, and if it turns out I actually do have Asperger's/ASD, then I'd still probably not mention it because of the stigma the internet has attached to people with autism spectrum disorders.

Asperger's is an explanation, not an excuse. You don't use it to act like a total asshat and try to avoid blame.

the thing with Asperger's and other autism spectrum disorders is that if you only look at a long list of symptoms and behaviors, most of us exhibit a few. like you said, we all have odd quirks. it only becomes a disorder when those quirks start interfering with your life - school, work, personal relationships, happiness - in destructive ways.

ugh I could go on but I won't. basically, if it's not affecting your life in any significant way, there's no need to worry about having an ASD, unless you think learning about them would help you understand yourself better.
