This has a fairly distinctive air of, "Fandom is starting to exist in the real world and I don't like this!"
Which is fine if that's how you feel, but not all of us are ashamed about enjoying something, even if some people take it to an extreme level.
Someone everywhere takes something to an extreme, case in point, religious fanatics. And yeah, they give regular people with faith a bad name, in the same way the spastic fans have people looking at fandom with a stink-eye, but when it comes down to it, everyone is probably going to judge everyone else for something, and hiding fandom under a rug, or in a wardrobe so deep you could find Narnia, doesn't seem like the best way to go about things.

I agree that sometimes it's easy to forget which things might be shocking for people outside fandoms, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)You know the people who are really engaging in self-destructive behaviors aren't generally supported by fandom. Don't be mixing them up with people who, through no fault of their own, don't fit into society's narrow, bigotted standards of what people should be like.

/puts on Fan Historian Hat
what they're saying is that while fandom has always had crazies (in the 1950s I think there were several people who insisted that SF fans were really a chosen people of space aliens. Really.) that it's easier for the crazies to exist in a place where they almost never have to interact with others in real life. Back when fandom existed only in clubs and mags, that is, in real life spaces, there was a check against the real whackjobs who thought they were space aliens or elves or whatever. Now, there isn't.
I'm not certain I completely agree with the poster, mostly because my research into fan history suggests that sorry, the crazies have always been with us and they've always been THIS bad. There are entire books written about the fan feuds in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s; there were people waiting for Captain Kirk to come pick them up and people trying to live in fan enclaves of weirdoes since the beginning. Fandom by its very nature encourages cultish weird behavior; it ALWAYS has, and it ALWAYS will.
Basically? Fans are freaks. Deal with it.

I remember the "good old days," of having to toady up to older, more experienced fans in the SF and anime clubs, and, to be very honest... like most good old days, they weren't that good.
I think things are better now.

There's positive reinforcement for good things.
And stuff like people thinking they can diagnose others isn't limited to fandom people. My mom thinks she's a doctor.
Sure some crazy stuff goes on, but I find that lies in the individuals who do it and the ones who encourage it.

I don't think fandom needs to be segregated though...
(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)Basically I feel like you are suggesting fandom needs to be segregated from regular society and along with that so do the mentally ill and the socially awkward.
But then you talk about shut ins, so the point is a bit muddled.
In any case, I don't think taking away the internet is the right answer, yes there is always good with the bad, but don't FORGET the GOOD just because there is BAD.
Even for the extreme cases of the mentally ill and the extremely socially awkward I don't think isolating them and calling them freaks will help anything. Yes it can have a negative impact when someone is crazy and people online tell them they're not, but honestly there are a lot of level headed people online, because EVERYONE is online, and I have been witness to many "interventions" when people online seem to be exhibiting off behavior.
These interventions are not something that happened in reality, because people in their real life might have not been clued in on their break down. As someone who is a private person, I can tell you it's very easy to hide my thoughts in reality, even pre internet.
Also keep in mind that many people, if not for the internet- would be isolated in very close minded and closed off societies. I'm not talking in terms of fandom- but in terms of real persecution, like from race, religion, sexuality, gender, disability etc etc etc. Fandom/internet is a great haven for those of us who really AREN'T freaks and are just told by an unhealthy environment that we are.
And heck, the mentally unstable? Why can't they be in fandom too? Especially if someone is seeking help. I would never consider myself full on crazy (I don't do any of the things you mentioned in your secret) but I would consider myself EXTREMELY socially awkward and I suffer from depression and bad social anxiety. Do I get a pass? Am I too crazy for fandom?

also I'm not seeing anything inflammatory about the OP's comment on Asperger's. it looks like s/he is saying that it's a valid condition (because it is), but when people start dumbing it down and making it ~internet trendy~, it becomes less of a valid condition and more like a fun sticker you can apply to yourself. there's no shame at all in having Asperger's, but like any other psychological issue, it takes a lot of effort for someone with it to be aware of their limitations and continually work on keeping the more disruptive aspects in check. when you have a subculture of people telling you it's everyone else's fault that they can't handle your disorder - the "neurotypicals" are oppressing you and who gives a fuck about them anyway - that is a really bad thing. this applies equally to a lot of other internet subcultures based around psychological stuff. "positive feedback loop" in this sense is a pretty apt description.
ugh, tl;dr
