The real question, OP, is who is all of this hurting? So someone believes it's okay to be a shut in, who are you to say that it's NOT okay for that person?

This has a fairly distinctive air of, "Fandom is starting to exist in the real world and I don't like this!"

Which is fine if that's how you feel, but not all of us are ashamed about enjoying something, even if some people take it to an extreme level.

Someone everywhere takes something to an extreme, case in point, religious fanatics. And yeah, they give regular people with faith a bad name, in the same way the spastic fans have people looking at fandom with a stink-eye, but when it comes down to it, everyone is probably going to judge everyone else for something, and hiding fandom under a rug, or in a wardrobe so deep you could find Narnia, doesn't seem like the best way to go about things.

I want to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're talking about people incorrectly diagnosing themselves with Aspergers.

But lumped in with the rest of your rant it really really *really* reads like you wish it were less socially displayed or accepted. :/

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I just know that last summer the mass media of half planet were talking about a German octopus -Paul- who was able to predict the results in the World Cup football matches. I don't think what we do on the Internet is weirder than that.

I agree that sometimes it's easy to forget which things might be shocking for people outside fandoms, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's just a matter of willpower to stop having aspergers, amirite? And shaming people is always the most effective way to get them to improve their lives.

You know the people who are really engaging in self-destructive behaviors aren't generally supported by fandom. Don't be mixing them up with people who, through no fault of their own, don't fit into society's narrow, bigotted standards of what people should be like.

Honey, that's the internet, not internet + fandom. The entire point of a huge information/communication web is to find people like you and things you're interested it, and fandom--as broad and varied as it is--is just one of those things. What about people who knit? What about people who collect hubcaps? What about people who just read wacky articles? Don't tell me that you think everyone who has a conversation in real life and in high tech countries has opinions and knowledge completely separate from the internet, except when they're in fandom. :\

I'm going to respond here, instead of to each individual post, because I think a lot of you are misunderstanding what this person is saying. Several of you think that this is yet another person complaining about fandom becoming mainstream or existing "in real life." I actually think this person is having the opposite problem. Fandom used to ONLY exist in the real world - from about 1935 - 1989, fandom existed through magazines and conventions. You had hard copy objects with real people's names on them (mostly) and then face to face meetups.

what they're saying is that while fandom has always had crazies (in the 1950s I think there were several people who insisted that SF fans were really a chosen people of space aliens. Really.) that it's easier for the crazies to exist in a place where they almost never have to interact with others in real life. Back when fandom existed only in clubs and mags, that is, in real life spaces, there was a check against the real whackjobs who thought they were space aliens or elves or whatever. Now, there isn't.

I'm not certain I completely agree with the poster, mostly because my research into fan history suggests that sorry, the crazies have always been with us and they've always been THIS bad. There are entire books written about the fan feuds in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s; there were people waiting for Captain Kirk to come pick them up and people trying to live in fan enclaves of weirdoes since the beginning. Fandom by its very nature encourages cultish weird behavior; it ALWAYS has, and it ALWAYS will.

Basically? Fans are freaks. Deal with it.

If you're having trouble maintaining fandom friendships, it's likely because you're whiny and uptight, not because you're the only sane person online. Try laughing from afar at people who are married to Snape on the astral plane instead of having a meltdown over their existence. The delusional people are off having their fun whether you approve or not.

I sort of see your point, but there's a whole lot of strawman in this secret. And I'd suspect that the ratio of batshit to reasonable is better than you're suggesting it is.

I remember the "good old days," of having to toady up to older, more experienced fans in the SF and anime clubs, and, to be very honest... like most good old days, they weren't that good.

I think things are better now.

Well I like internet fandom. I don't want to have to go to a con to talk about a show I like with other fans. A zine isn't a two-way conversation.

There's positive reinforcement for good things.

And stuff like people thinking they can diagnose others isn't limited to fandom people. My mom thinks she's a doctor.

Sure some crazy stuff goes on, but I find that lies in the individuals who do it and the ones who encourage it.

Yeah, I'm pretty hng about fandom condoning some things that really are just socially awkward behaviors. At the same time, though, I figure that the people who get all up in my face in stores over a small charm on my phone or whatever would just be that way over other things, if that wasn't there. So I kinda can't blame fandom. Like, if it wasn't some person going on at length over Inuyasha because I had a FMA symbol on my bag? It would be a Cowboys fan going on about my jersey. I've had both happen, so, you know, whatever? Just ignore people like that, move along.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Without the internet, fandom would never be this awesome, either..

I don't think fandom needs to be segregated though...

(Anonymous) 2011-06-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
While there are certain points I can kind of agree with, I think the generalities and a few points I am catching from these secret are leaving me with a bad feeling.

Basically I feel like you are suggesting fandom needs to be segregated from regular society and along with that so do the mentally ill and the socially awkward.

But then you talk about shut ins, so the point is a bit muddled.

In any case, I don't think taking away the internet is the right answer, yes there is always good with the bad, but don't FORGET the GOOD just because there is BAD.

Even for the extreme cases of the mentally ill and the extremely socially awkward I don't think isolating them and calling them freaks will help anything. Yes it can have a negative impact when someone is crazy and people online tell them they're not, but honestly there are a lot of level headed people online, because EVERYONE is online, and I have been witness to many "interventions" when people online seem to be exhibiting off behavior.

These interventions are not something that happened in reality, because people in their real life might have not been clued in on their break down. As someone who is a private person, I can tell you it's very easy to hide my thoughts in reality, even pre internet.

Also keep in mind that many people, if not for the internet- would be isolated in very close minded and closed off societies. I'm not talking in terms of fandom- but in terms of real persecution, like from race, religion, sexuality, gender, disability etc etc etc. Fandom/internet is a great haven for those of us who really AREN'T freaks and are just told by an unhealthy environment that we are.

And heck, the mentally unstable? Why can't they be in fandom too? Especially if someone is seeking help. I would never consider myself full on crazy (I don't do any of the things you mentioned in your secret) but I would consider myself EXTREMELY socially awkward and I suffer from depression and bad social anxiety. Do I get a pass? Am I too crazy for fandom?

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-06-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
there has always been a certain percentage of crazy in the fandom microcosm. people were self-diagnosing, soulbonding and stalking actors long before 28.8k connections. but the internet does make it easier for those people to clump together and strengthen their craziness, kind of like folie a deux on a massive scale.

also I'm not seeing anything inflammatory about the OP's comment on Asperger's. it looks like s/he is saying that it's a valid condition (because it is), but when people start dumbing it down and making it ~internet trendy~, it becomes less of a valid condition and more like a fun sticker you can apply to yourself. there's no shame at all in having Asperger's, but like any other psychological issue, it takes a lot of effort for someone with it to be aware of their limitations and continually work on keeping the more disruptive aspects in check. when you have a subculture of people telling you it's everyone else's fault that they can't handle your disorder - the "neurotypicals" are oppressing you and who gives a fuck about them anyway - that is a really bad thing. this applies equally to a lot of other internet subcultures based around psychological stuff. "positive feedback loop" in this sense is a pretty apt description.

ugh, tl;dr

All the things you used as a example (except asperger) are mocked all the time and I asure you, before Internet some of those people married in the astral plane (?) found other people who shared the same delusion and were "acepted" by them, but not by the rest of the world.
