fan =/= worshipper. You can find flaws in things you like... or used to like, anyway.

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, but the tone of the article seems like they're coming from a normally negative standpoint.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
But I've seen this particular poster's reviews. They basically never have anything nice to say about the show at all. They don't point out a few issues they have, they just constantly say that every episode was completely crap, with a few notable exceptions.

[identity profile] kitsune17.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's possible that these people do have squee/good things to say about the show but choose the net to voice what complaints they do have. ::shrugs::

Or maybe they used to love it and they stick around because they hope to love it again.

I do get tired of seeing nothing but complaints/negative comments from people though (but who doesn't?).

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think it would be better for them if they left, since they are clearly not enjoying themselves, but... sometimes letting go isn't easy? Especially if something's been your main fandom for so long? :(

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like it'd be a hell of a lot easier than writing out page long rants week-in and week-out.

Although they have announced that they've left the fandom (as of last week's episode), so I suppose we'll see.

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Co-signed.

I get being critical, hell I even get being over-critical sometimes. I get being disappointed in a something you used to love. But that post wasn't honest criticism, that was pure passive agression, like some weird kind of backhanded compliment. You can't even politely disagree without being acused of missing the supposed point. If you don't want a discussion, fine, keep it to your own journal. Don't tell a bunch of fans that the show they love sucks without giving them the chance to disagree.

[identity profile] king-jane.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, let them talk. My reaction to that poster in general:

(Anonymous) 2011-06-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Am I the only person who kind of likes negative reviewers sometimes? I have trouble when people feel like they HAVE TO LOVE EVERY SINGLE EPISODE EVER because they are a fan, especially because sometimes I don't like episodes, and I need to feel like I'm not crazy.

So when I need the negative I read reviews like that, if I don't need the negative I just scroll on by.

I mean yes, if watching a show is painful then someone should quit (I am a pretty dedicated fan but even I've quit shows here and there) but that's really up to the individual.

Plus some people criticize heavily and still enjoy a show, sometimes I get so busy talking about ONE thing I hated that I never talk about the ten other things I liked.

tldr Don't leave negative fans, I neeedddd yoooouuu! <3

[identity profile] katamanda.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I do. Especially since I, sadly, haven't been enjoying this season. It's nice to read the thoughts of someone who see's it the same way as you when everyone else is cheering how much they love it.

Fans should be allowed to rant and share their negative opinions on shows, and if you don't want to read someone saying bad things about it then... don't? The reviews of the person in the secret usually tell before you click the cut whether its postive or negative, and there's always backclick.

If it's negative reviewers in Doctor Who fandom you need, I really don't think you'll have a problem. Fandom tip: for instant squee-harshing, log into Gallifrey Base.

I don't know. I stop watching if a show is going in a direction I really don't like and I always reserve the right to dump new canon out the window if the characters are out of character, but I'm not going to leave the fandom if I still want to participate. I just warn people that I'm working with such-and-such a timespan and not incorporating new stuff.

I don't see the point in persevering with something that is upsetting you if there's nothing redeeming there, but I do understand complaining about something you love going off the rails. I just tend to live in the past when it gets to that jumping-off point.

[identity profile] 10littlebullets.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Word. Which isn't to say you're not allowed to be critical--if anyone wants to rag on Daleks in Manhattan or joke about needing to be drunk to properly appreciate RTD's finales*, I will be right there with you--but I really don't get the dedication some people have to turning out so much earnest, seething negativity for almost every episode. If nothing the show does will meet your standards, why are you still watching?

* And just to pre-empt the wank, that is not a slam against RTD. Well, okay, it's an affectionate slam.

[identity profile] goatsfoot.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha I totally agree with the drunk bit. They are total crack.

[identity profile] criedtherabbit.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
...90% of Who fandom never has anything nice to say about Doctor Who.

[identity profile] electrumicity.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
this

God, I can't even discuss the show on a forum I usually go on because 95% of the posts are "MOFFAT SUCKS" "MATT SMITH IS GAY" "YOU ARE LITERALLY A LOW-IQ POSTER FOR LIKING THE SHOW STILL" and this is in the Doctor Who circle jerk topic there

It's bloody impossible to talk about this show anymore sometimes. Often.

It's the whole "Star Wars fans hate Star Wars" thing. A lot of fandoms are like that.

HOLY FUCK, THIS. All the whiny jackasses who just can't stop watching make me eye-roll.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand...I'm not so very impressed with the Moffat era, which makes me sad, because I desperately WANT to be. I really have gotten to like Matt Smith, and I want to love it.

And I loved, loved, LOVED "The Doctor's Wife," except for one line, so I totally understand the people going, "FINALLY!"

On the other hand...yeah. There are some people on my list who used to be awesome, squee-ful DW fans to hang out with, and now they are so bitter and whiny. They don't seem to like ANYTHING, they complain about EVERYTHING, and...it's not even that their complaints aren't valid (they usually make good points), but surely they could have been this critical of RTD's era and chose not to because they liked it better. They could CHOOSE to have more fun with it, and they aren't.

It's so depressing to see the good cheer in this fandom draining away. At least my corner of it. I just want to enjoy the show, guys, and you're trying so hard to ruin it.

[identity profile] forever-alone.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's hard to understand if you're never felt this way or if you're generally not a very negative person, but sometimes complaining and being negative can be half (or more) of the appeal of experiencing a series. Hell, there are some things I've followed ONLY to complain about. I'm not familiar with the poster in question so this may not be the case with them, but hating on a series can be more entertaining than the work itself.

Also, some people just have issues with dropping a series once they've invested a lot of time in it. Even if it's boring and tedious you keep hoping it'll get better though you know it probably won't, and a part of you still wants the payoff of finding out what happens/seeing the end. The complaining makes it less torturous to sit through that in the meantime.

It's funny because I thought 'the Doctor's wife' was quite a weak episode.

I used to be in Heroes fandom. The new series was awful. Why did I keep watching? Because I loved the characters. And when you watch something and it disappoints you, sometimes you need to vent.

[identity profile] taleya.livejournal.com 2011-06-04 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The old saying was that there was nothing more full of self-loathing than a who fan. Still applies to some old school fans. Some of us got the fuck over it :P

Personally, I'm loving this season. It certainly does not help that Smith's pretty damned well awesomeness personified with how he's taking the character :) I had some serious issues with s2/28 (to the point where I nearly stopped watching altogether) but man, at least then I ranted on my LJ and didn't feel the urge to trumpet to every man and his dog how this sucked that sucked, everything sucks now and it was better back when dinosaurs roamed the earth....

I don't even watch DW, but I know just what you mean. People like that in fandom can be so frustrating. It's one thing to have reasonable criticisms; it's another to act like it's a horrible chore to HAVE to watch.
