BUT I would have preferred a third option where I let him live but told him the fuck off and got to explain I wasn't about to let him die as some ~martyr to the cause~ when he was responsible for the deaths of so many innocent people, including many of the people he supposedly was trying to free.

That's why I let him live myself, along with the fact that I see him as WANTING to die in that moment. Killing him is a mercy. It just bugs the crap out of me that if he's left alive, the dialogue is all 'hooray for Chantry destruction and massive death!' I can't bring myself to make him a martyr, but I don't want to say that he is able to get away scotfree. And this is why I'm currently writing a 'Hawke viciously tears Anders a new one for what he's done' fic.
