I've given up on trying to explain to Jon haters why I love him so much. Most of them either ignore my arguments and/or remain determined to hate him.

To each their own.

I personally prefer Jon from the books to how he's portrayed in the series (which goes for about 90% of what's in the series anyways) because he's NOT whiny.

He's much more resilient than most of the other characters because he knows what his lot in life is and is determined to make the best of it through his own efforts. He doesn't expect anyone to give him anything.

I love the television series. It does have its flaws, but I still think HBO is doing an amazing job. And I adore Jon's actor, Kit Harington.

Exactly! That is what I love about Jon. He joined the Night's Watch to earn his own place in the world, to make his life better. I don't see him as whiny at all. Jon is a solemn and sad character, and there are legitimate reasons behind his sadness. He's a troubled young man, yet he fights on. That's why I get annoyed when fans call him emo or whiny. Yet, despite his vulnerability, I agree that Jon is very resilient. I wish HBO included certain lines, such as "This one belongs to me" or when he talked back to Catelyn in order to visit Bran. They're simple lines, but they display the strength Jon posses perfectly.

Yep. This is why I've always avoided aSoIaF fandom on LJ, honestly; Jon is my favorite character (and then Dany), and the amount of dislike/disdain/apathy/irritation directed at him (and Dany, really) by most of the comms I've seen (before the HBO series came out, admittedly), completely turned me off the fandom. Especially since a lot of it comes across as elitist snobbery because 'oh my god this type of character has been done so many times before, how unoriginal, Gary Stu/Mary Sue WAH'. Yeah, there's a reason it's an archetype, dudes, that doesn't mean it can't be good and told in a fresh, interesting way with a highly individual character.

I'm tired of beating my head against that wall. People hate Jon because he's on an archetypical coming of age story/he's boring/emo/whiny/entitled/clearly on to great things (wtf can you only like people if their lives look to be shit)/WHATEVER, and by now I'm just like...cool story, bro. /continues loving him for reasons that do not include 'being an over-identifying fanboy' or 'fangirl lusting after the pretty boy'.
