In the first book, I alternated between finding him interesting and extremely boring. I'm on the second book now and he bores me to tears, almost to the point where I want to just skip his chapters.

For some reason, he's also significantly less interesting to me in the show. So, yep. Agreed.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OH GOD, THANK YOU. All of my RL friends read the books, and they all have such ridiculous man-crushes on Jon Snow and I am so tired of hearing about it. Yes, I get that he's got just the right amount of privilege and angst and heroism, not to mention the hot, wild redheaded girlfriend, so make him every nerd's wet dream. That does not make him interesting.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
In the ASOIAF comm I'm in, people are actually pretty 'meh' about Jon. It's good for my sanity.

[identity profile] aramis-chan.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I find Jon boring and unoriginal as hell. I ended up skipping over his parts in the later books. (And then I started actively disliking him too, but my reasons for that are kinda spoilery.)

[identity profile] no-one-specific.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've read a book and a half, so I might be wrong about this, so. But I personally found him to be a bit too whiny, but at the same time, I felt that he was very different from the rest of the characters, living a different situation than anything they had, so you got another view of the world, from the point of view from someone who 'fell between the cracks'. Or something. That's why I liked him, personally, but yes, he is whiny and annoying (sometimes?)

[identity profile] jewelia13.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
WORD. Everybody's always going on about him/Dany/Bran/Tyrion... but I don't get the appeal at all. I'm more of a Team Jorah/Ned/Jaime/Viserys/Littlefinger girl, though - which means I'm probably doing it quite wrong indeed!

[identity profile] beautiful-void.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think he's whiny, entitled, and boring myself.

[identity profile] adlanth.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Image wouldn't load at first but hm, that hair is rather recognisable.

Haven't read the books, not in the fandom, and I rather like him... but I wonder how much of my liking is due to thinking: 'oh, a bastard - oh that reminds me of Fitzchivalry - mmm I was rather fond of Fitz -'. Which is a pretty stupid reason to like someone but hey. Also, I rather liked the way he defended Samwisewell?

The third book is what inspires all the love :) Just wait. There is a reason he is shown as one of the people on the Iron Throne in the promo pics (my icon).

not super fond of him either. I was a little disappointed to hear that he would be featured so much in the upcoming book. I'm kind of "eh" about the tv show in general.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't say I love Jon the way I love, say, Ayra or Ned, but I enjoy the Wall storyline very much - and Sam, actually - so I don't mind him being a tad bit cliche.

The hair on that actor, though... *__*

omg yes. He's just a young man going through his stupid coming of age story like every other male fantasy protagonist.

I love the Lannisters and Ned and Cat and Robert and Littlefinger because they've already had their carefree, idealistic youth and now are dealing with the adult issues and acting like adults and not idealistic youths.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the character because he's a nice kid, but I'm not really interested in his story.

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not my favorite (and I really don't like him on the show), but poor book Jon getting all this hate. He's extremely flawed and I think the fact that he's called out on it makes him an interesting and awesome character (like most of them, honestly) and IDK, he's a Stark, they fuck up a lot, but they're lovable while doing it and also you try to hide behind your hands because you're worried they're going to be eaten by a bear at any moment.

I think with Jon, Tyrion and Arya there's a sense that you can tell they're the author's favorites, which I know could rile people the wrong way. But IDK.

Because he's the poor little woobie that everyone is supposed to feel sorry for, and so far he appears to be one of the characters slated to be in a position of power at the end of the series. Unsurprisingly, he's the character most of the fanboys tend to identify with. They're so misunderstood...*sob*...but one day they'll show everyone!

And I don't get the fandom lust for the actor, either. That horrible wispy facial hair grosses me out, and his hair just looks poofy. What's the big deal?

YOU KNOW NOTHING, OP.

jk, but he was pretty bamf near the end of aSoS.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how the other characters are always pointing out that he's being a whiny douche.

[identity profile] allinye.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've given up on trying to explain to Jon haters why I love him so much. Most of them either ignore my arguments and/or remain determined to hate him.

To each their own.

Strictly speaking from the books, I felt Jon was slightly whiny in the beginning, but he learns quickly to grow up. Thus, I didn't find him too grating. I alternate between indifference to interests depending on the chapters.

The show though? I hate his hair. On top of that, just due to the fact of visuals, he comes off as more whiny.

I have to say I felt the most distant from him when he slept with his wildling girlfriend. I just..yeah..whatever dude, bro. Nice vows you have there.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't love him, but I like him a lot. He knows his lot in life (and it DOES suck), and he's doing his best to deal with it. If he comes off as whiny in the first & second book, it's because he's supposed to be 14/15. And in the end he always squares his shoulders and mans up.

(and I don't get how you'd want to skip his chapters, even if you don't like him how can you not dig on the Wall or ANY of the people up in that creepy-ass frozen wasteland? I love how different those chapters are from anybody else's. But obviously not everyone's gonna agree)

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I generally hated Jon's chapters in the books, but I'm finding him slightly more tolerable in the series so far. Then again, I'm a Catelyn stan, so my opinions are probs a bit out of whack with fandom at large.

He gets really BAMF and interesting in the third book, it does get better. In the second book, I agree, he's mostly just there, and I wanted to skip a lot of his chapters.
