Speaking just as a show watcher as I've barely started the books...

He's far from my favorite and I think he's been kind of a dull character compared to most of the others in the show so far, but Idk...I just find him easy to care about somehow. I can't not love a guy who would turn down a willing and ready and completely naked girl because the thought of making another bastard child turns out to be a chronic moodkiller for him, LOL. Of course he's a big brat sometimes but still, nobody expects him to amount to anything but he has so much determination anyway.
