Ah, I have... difficulty with the whole templar/mage issue - in part because I feel like the arguments against the mages were shoehorned in, or at least done sloppily. Grace will turn on you regardless of whether you helped her/helped the mages, because blood mages can't be trusted lolol. If mages have freedom, they will form a new Tevinter empire because that's totally the next logical step! And also it was a mage that killed your mother, don't you hate mages now? Please?

IDK, I think the game developers knew that most players were going to go in sympathising for the mages, but they failed in presenting a reasonable argument as to why they shouldn't.

I do think that mages, unchecked, would grasp political power. Why not? Those born more powerful than others will naturally gain control unless society has rules that prevent it. If being born a mage were a sign of prestige rather than a marker for ostracism/fear/wariness it would be an incredible social advantage on top of their basic advantage in ability. It's like... what if some people were born more muscular and physically capable than others? Why, they would be capable in all sorts of jobs that the other "weaker" folks would be barred from, and they would deem themselves superior to the "weaker" folks, and violence against "weaker" folks would be normalized because that's just how it is and its the fault of "weaker" folks if they can't protect themselves, and...wait.

I do agree that the writers kind of dropped the ball, though. Grace's betrayal made basically no sense. "Mages killed my mother" makes sense on a personal role-playing sort of level but not a logical one.

The whole mythology of Thedas revolves around mages and pride-cometh-before-a-fall scenario; I feel like that should have been worked in somehow.

...so the only solution to not letting the buff push the non buff around is to make sure we push them around first?

Eh, I'm still undecided about whether or not the mages would seek to create dominance over non-mages. Tevinter is a culture that supports slavery and blood magic and all that fun stuff, while as far as we can tell the rest of Thedas finds it abhorrent. At least at first, the majority of free mages would shy away from seeking power. Whether it would remain that way is debatable, but I don't see it as reasonable to prevent them from having freedom as a precaution against them gaining political power.

I kind of support a system where the mages are checked, but not forced to remain in the Circle once they've passed their Harrowing. Templars would still be present, but not in quite the same position of power as they currently are. The problem is, reaching that point is in the very distant future, and it's difficult to determine the best course of action to reach that point at present.

I would like to point out that that's a rather convenient mythology. For the chantry anyway, to defend their actions in oppressing mages.

Look up the "Mark of Cain". Essentially it claimed that Cain was given dark skin for killing his brother Abel, that black people are his descendants, and was used as a justification for slavery.

Just because the current chantry is claiming that's what happened doesn't make it the case.
