[Homestuck]

[identity profile] vethica.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's always frustrated me about Homestuck too. For a society described as being full of pansexuals, there sure are almost no same-sex relationships. :|

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
... I'm not sure Homestuck would be the place to find what you're looking for, anyway.

Even if it weren't so unintentionally heteronormative, troll society is still founded on murder and oppression and its citizens are literally raised by animals. Probably not the best correlation.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
This strikes me as the wrong reason to read homestuck. The trolls don't even show up until act V. It's a comic about Sburb.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
(well, a few of them troll the human characters earlier, but you don't see them until act five.)

[identity profile] thememusicc.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to parse this secret and it's really hard: someone 'slogged though' the first four acts because they were eager to read about the troll romance? Really? That was the low point of the comic for me, and if someone told you that was something to look forward to that someone is an awful person.

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP meant "troll romance" so much as the chance to engage with a fictitious society that is truly non-heteronormative and non-gendered. Which... yeah, they were definitely barking up the wrong tree.

(... say, uh, ever read any Le Guin, OP?)

My thoughts exactly.

It sounds like OP's friend wanted someone to talk about Homestuck really bad and just played up the part they knew OP would like the most. It happens to me all the time - I get talked into reading or watching stuff just because there's one random side character who someone thinks I'll like and they conveniently forget to mention that this character only appears for three pages.

Eridan hitting on Karkat and Sollux and Equius? Nepeta and Terezi RP flirting with each other? Equius's pervy IMs towards Dave? Karkat's crush on John? Equius and Gamzee's weird sexual roleplaying? Gamzee's requests for sloppy makeouts with Karkat? Terezi and Vriska's kismesis rivalry?

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Most of those are comic gags, though. I mean, in that same vein, Dave said some pretty homoerotic stuff to Tavros, but that certainly doesn't make Dave gay, or Earth society any less heteronormative. Hussie seems to treat homosexuality as a punchline more than anything.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well Gamzee's sloppy makeout request was actually supposed to look like it was from Terezi... it did take me about three rereads to realize he was using her quirk though.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Gotta admit, though, Kanaya and Vriska probably take the cake, what with having had their moments together in all four quadrants.

Same. \: I liked some of the characters but I got really tired of the 'tell, not show' style of the thing itself. I want to read and see a webcomic, not slog through page after page of chatlogs.

You know, just because a species doesn't care about what gender the other person in their relationship is doesn't mean that their species doesn't have an instinctive desire to...oh, I dunno....BREED.

I can understand wanting to be treated fairly, but that doesn't mean that everyone has to BE LIKE YOU. The vast majority of people are heterosexual. Deal with it.

Btw, if trolls don't procreate sexually, then disregard the first statement.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
according to word of god, gender doesn't actually factor in troll reproduction, tho'

(he's vague on how it works but buckets are involved)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Gender doesn't matter in troll breeding. It all involves genetic material in buckets and offering it to a mother grub. (Probably more than you wanted to know.)

Word of God is that they're all pansexual but in practice, it's way slanted toward heterosexuality. Valid reason to be annoyed.

Okay, since trolls don't procreate sexually, I will disregard the first statement. But the second? Well, fuck you too. Wanting more queer representation -- especially in a CANONICALLY PANSEXUAL SPECIES -- doesn't mean we're endorsing anything even CLOSE to "everyone has to BE LIKE US."

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Troll society is probably much like Human society would be if it weren't for homophobia: most people are bi/pan to some degree, but what that winds up meaning is that they'll have same sex crushes/thoughts/that one person they dated in high school, but have most of their relationships with the opposite sex. Bisexuals who are even in their inclinations/lean toward the same sex/Kinsey 6ers are much less common.

As for the rest, IDEK. I think Homestuck is over rated, but is absolutely full of fun bits and pieces. There is something for everyone, if you can slog through it. And if not, just tune in for your favorites ^_^

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
My feeling is that Hussie is letting his inner shipper take over? It's probably a personal bias of his. I know for a fact that my own story has pretty much everyone as pansexual, I am still more comfortable with going with heterosexual relationships, though I'd make an effort to -not- erase the idea of homosexual ones.
Not excusing hetero-normativity here, just throwing this idea out there.

[identity profile] duckfight.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Troll society was p. much never intended to be a supertolerant pansexual utopia at all, though; Hussie just utilized his vast array of logic-based weapons & concluded that if he'd said that trolls reproduced by dumping 'genetic material' into huge pails rather than / as a result of doing the nasty, then gender wouldn't actually play a role in reproduction whatsoever so 'homosexuality' would never have even been a thing. It's just... logical for that to be the case. If Hussie didn't make most of the story up as he went along I don't think the trolls would even have genders. It's got nothing to do with LGBT stuff in the first place, so when people talk about how he's fucking it up or only pretending to be tolerant & progressive in order to gain fans I'm like :|

Anyway, being in an open & tolerant society doesn't mean that if you scooped up 12 random friends the romantic relationships between all of them would be split entirely equally between all the possible gender pairings. (Would they even all want to do each other? Probably not - take Eridan, for example. Take him far away.)

punch your friend for me

SPOILERS!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Characters who have shown sexual interest in characters of their same gender:

-Karkat: towards John
-Kanaya: towards Vriska and Rose
-Vriska/Terezi (Blackrom)
-Equius: towards Gamzee
-Eridan: towards EVERYONE.

That's six trolls out of twelve. I'll admit the comic focuses more in heterosexual relationships, but Kanaya/Rose, Kanaya/Vriska and Vriska/Terezi get a lot of attention, and Karkat/John got a *flash* dedicated to it. Heck, Equius/Gamzee was even a plot point!

I'm pretty sure the creator never wanted to be open-minded or what has you. If some fans want to think he does, more power to them, but I always saw him as yet another heteronormative US-ian writer.

[identity profile] scholars.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, why do people try to read homestuck for the trolls. if you didn't like (or were neutral towards) the first four acts you will not like any of it, the end.
also hivebent is the worst act by miles, what is wrong with your friend.
