I'm trying to parse this secret and it's really hard: someone 'slogged though' the first four acts because they were eager to read about the troll romance? Really? That was the low point of the comic for me, and if someone told you that was something to look forward to that someone is an awful person.

I don't think OP meant "troll romance" so much as the chance to engage with a fictitious society that is truly non-heteronormative and non-gendered. Which... yeah, they were definitely barking up the wrong tree.

I gathered that much, but even then, if that's what the OP was told, I feel awful for them because the only real evidence they got of that was that ten-page description of how troll society works.

Yeah, I honestly wonder if maybe Andrew wouldn't have been better off just not mentioning it at all. All it seems to do is set up his readers with these high expectations that are inevitably dashed.

(Then again, his empire is built on the shattered dreams and tears wrung from his trollees' eyes.)

It sounds like OP's friend wanted someone to talk about Homestuck really bad and just played up the part they knew OP would like the most. It happens to me all the time - I get talked into reading or watching stuff just because there's one random side character who someone thinks I'll like and they conveniently forget to mention that this character only appears for three pages.
