like twats

...really?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
oh, here we go...language police up in here

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
nah it just makes it hard to take their comment on SJ seriously when they chose that word out of all others to use lol

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
common vernacular word in common use shocker!!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
In the UK, I'm led to understand that "twat" is a common vernacular term for a person, one who is dull-witted and unpleasant.

Here in the US, it is not.

Here in the US, many people would be surprised if it ever became a common vernacular term for a person, because here it is used to refer exclusively to female genitalia. It's not even like "dick," "prick," or "asshole," words which are commonly used both in reference to body parts and to negative personalities. Here, it is just a word, a very vulgar one, for the body part.

(OA)

Sorry, I forgot that America = The World. (I'm rightpondian.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I forgot that you were a twat who thinks it's A-OK to use any word you like, without thinking of what it might mean in the vocabulary of someone listening, if that person listening is one of them US-ians.

Cause don'tcha know them USians are always being cultural boors who think their culture is the right one and everyone else is doing it 'wrong.'

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 11:19 am (UTC)(link)

Bang on! Right now, that's exactly what you're being.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
...so, he's not allowed to use the word 'twat' because it might offend your USian sensibilities, but you are?

Hypocrisy is fun.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Urban dictionary says you're wrong, as does everyone who's in the U.S. who's used "twat" to describe an inept person. It also supposedly means hitting someone in some way, but I've never heard that one.

(Also, don't be stupid, Miss I-know-everything-about-every-part-of-the-U.S.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)

That one's about as British as it gets. ("I say let's get out there and TWAT IT!" - Dave Lister, Red Dwarf)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
denied. I'm an American and I hear people use it alllll the time.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
What part of the US do *you* live in? Because I live in the pacific northwest, and I have never heard it used to mean "female genitalia". :/

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the UK definition is true in the UK. Presumably the person you're replying to is from the UK?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I will make a wild stab in the dark here and say that, given as we are discussing a British show, and as the person who made the "twat" comment also used other UK slang, such as "arsehole", that they are not from the godalmighty US of A and probably neither knows nor care what you think of the word.

It is an unfortunate feature of these social justice debates that many of the people raising hell about other people's language and giving it the whole "this word does not mean what you think it means, bigot!" bit so frequently fail to recognise their own galloping ethnocentricity and get massively bent out of shape when it is pointed out to them. In this case, it's a British user of a British word having their language Amerisplained back at them, but so often it's someone with English as a second language who is on the receiving end of some intemperate rant about how they have failed to fully appreciate the full etymology and shifting nuance of whatever word or phrase is being objected to this time round. I imagine that would be an encouraging little confidence-booster, eh, getting shouted at for using a word according to its contemporary meaning?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
FFS, you're a blind shithead. If you read my message, that is, read it without a smug presumption that you would find "Amerisplaining" at the end of it, you would find that all it was doing was explaining why the anon who found "twat" an inappropriate word to use in a discussion that supposedly promoted social justice probably perceived it that way. No one said "oh, but the way the Americans perceive is automatically the right way"; on the contrary the attitude has been "since the poster who chose to use the word is from the UK, that means anyone to whom their word choice means something different is in the wrong."

I dunno whether you're from the UK or the US or what, but one thing I know you're not is a grownup, because the grownup response would have been "Oh, the anon thought I was using the female genitalia as an insult? No wonder they thought I was missing the point of social justice. I only meant it as 'inept person.'" See? No need even for an apology, just acknowledgement and clarification. And if you were a grownup, it wouldn't be beyond you.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
omg ableist!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am not the OP of this thread and you need to understand that you are dealing with a number of anon posters here, not ust the OP.

I take it that it's the red mist of righteousness/being caught out that has suspended your judgement for five minutes and had you chucking phrases like "blind shithead" around. You are hardly in a position to comment on the appropriateness or otherwise of anyone's vocabulary and intentions when you are using language like that as an insult.

For the record, I am from neither the US or the UK (though I live in one of them); however, I am visually impaired and am typing this on a reallllllly big screen using assistive software. If I had a pound for every time someone has used the blind = stupid/obtuse thing within my earshot, I'd be rich indeed. Unlike "twat", where the genital definition is increasingly arcane and unknown to most people, blind means the same thing all over; however, it's not worth my energy to be bothered by it most of the time. I make a presumption of mere thoughtlessness on their part and I will make a presumption of mere thoughtlessness on your part, since you couldn't have known, but maybe you should be less quick off the mark when giving other people the third degree about their language choices? You'd look like less of a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-15 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
blind shithead, yeah?

hahahahaha! Well, that's your credibility down the pan. Sorry no-one appreciated your self-righteous little lecture and cruddy, half-baked research.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
The irony of you calling anyone immature... awesome.

By the way, I'm offended by your using the term social justice so incorrectly. In my region of the world it means redistribution of wealth. Learn the correct definitions, you ignoramus!

[identity profile] hikari87.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
you're like

one of the best anons ever

seriously you should be the ruler of the anons or something =D

karel: (lafayette; running from town to town)

[personal profile] karel 2011-06-15 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
well duh, the US owns the internet, right? most of the people on the internet are from the US, so it's all about truth, justice, and American sensibilities!

[identity profile] silver-coins.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
you're right of course. how could I ever forget! ;)

in all seriousness though, it amazes me the amount of people assuming you're American unless you specify otherwise. it gets on my nerves like nothing else.
