Sorry it's late. Half of tinypic being down = I have to go through manually and replace the ones that aren't working. Hopefully it'll be back by tomorrow

Before season six, I wanted the show to focus mainly on Sam and Dean. But personally, I feel like the Winchesters' story ended in season five (with, sadly, Sam in Hell and, not as sadly, Dean with Lisa), and I feel like season six would have been infinitely more interesting had Castiel been the main character, with the OCCASIONAL guest appearance by Dean (or maybe even Sam).

Season six's "plot" was all over the damn place, and the war in Heaven was the most interesting bit of it. If Castiel, Crowley, and Balthazar had been the main characters (with Raphael as the sole Big Bad), I think it would have been a LOT more interesting.

So, I'm sorry, OP, but I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I love the boys, and while season two remains my favorite, I just feel like the show NEEDS a fixed plot and Big Bad, and that it would be most easily obtained by picking the strongest plot and sticking to it -- i.e., whatever is going on in Cas' little world.

I kind of agree with you here, in that season six didn't really have a cohesive plot. It was all a bit chaotic and there were subplots that lead absolutely nowhere, and the Eve story was totally rushed and wasted. I love the MOTW episodes (they're some of my favourites, in fact) and I think if you take season six as just a bunch of stand-alone episodes, it's great. But as a whole, the overarching story really didn't work.

That said, I disagree with your point that season five should have been pretty much it for the Winchesters. For me, SPN is - and always will be - about Sam and Dean. I love the angel storyline and I would have loved for Cas (and Balthazar) to have more screentime, and I would have loved more build-up rather than just smooshing everything important into the last three episodes, but I think if you lose Sam and Dean as the heart of the show, it isn't SPN anymore. It's something else entirely - not necessarily something bad, but something different.

Some anon above said that the angels should get their own spin-off, which is totally an idea I support (but will probably never happen, sadly). They have their own world and their own issues and their own mythology that I think is getting too big and expansive to remain just a part of a show that isn't truly theirs.

Well, to be honest, I was part of the camp (is there a camp? I don't know, it might just be me) that think the show should have ENDED at season five. Swan Song felt much more like a SERIES finale than a SEASON finale, with the bit at the end with Sam under the streetlamp feeling completely unnecessary and contrived as a sequel hook by the CW. The ending would have been sad, definitely -- I LOVE Sam -- but it worked, for me. The Winchesters' story had ended, and was final. So, if there HAD to be a season six, I feel like focusing on the other characters who DID have a story to keep going -- i.e., Cas and the angel camp -- would have worked better, rather than forcing more blood out of the Winchester stone.

But that's just my opinion. =) Although, I would have been more than happy with SPN ending and a spin-off about the angels and/or Samuel Colt (GOD why didn't that happen?!) starting up.

I think there are a lot of people who feel that way, actually. I understand what you mean - there was a definite finality to Swan Song that I think the writers will struggle to replicate when the series does end. And because of that finality, I don't think I would have complained (too much) if the series had ended with Swan Song.

So, yeah...I absolutely get where you're coming from on that point. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to Sam and Dean's story. =]

The SPN universe is so extensive, there are a million different possible spin-offs! Angels, origins, next generation, the Samuel Colt idea is interesting - I can just imagine it: how he gets into hunting, discovering how to make the Colt and Ruby's knife. It'd be brilliant. If we don't get at least one spin-off from SPN, I'll be disappointed.

Agreeing to disagree works for me! =)

. . . next generation . . .

Ahh! I actually saw a fic once (that was poorly written, sadly) with an actually cool premise for this. Instead of having the kids be Sam or Dean's (with the exception of Ben, because I STILL think he's Dean's >->; ), they took the kids from various episodes in the show. So you had Ben, obviously, and Lucas from Dead in the Water, etc. It was a very cool premise; I just wish it hadn't been riddled with poor sentence structure and grammar, haha.

But yesss, we need a spinoff, it would be awesome. =D

Where was it said that Colt made Ruby's knife? I don't remember that.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
The scene was deleted from the Frontierland episode, but the director said it at a recent convention.

Wow I wish they'd left it in. I can't be the only one who wanted to know where the knife came from.

[identity profile] lavosspawn.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
There is a huge amount of spin off potential. I doubt that it'll ever get taken advantage of, though, which sucks.

I didn't mind the whole angel/demon storyline, it's just how they went about it that I didn't like. Season 5 had it's moments and I can't even watch most of Season 6 without fast forwarding through most of the episodes or skipping them entirely. The one thing I miss about the MOTW seasons was that it was funny, but not...cringeworthy funny (i.e. the meta episodes, the titanic episode, that cowboy episode). I wish they would have done more with Eve. She was the best part of Season 6 IMO, and she was in like two episodes.

I agree with you about Crowley.
