Am I the only one bothered by the idea that this BNF might be transitioning not because they're legit trans, but because they believe men get more respect and that somehow transitioning to male will somehow earn them more respect?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hope for them they're not. But I'm sort of figuring doctors would filter that out?

[identity profile] citrusy-fun.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
In the words of House.

People lie.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they do.

But then, they might have been lying about why they were pretending to be a man online several years ago.
If anything, this secret does show that the BNF has a tendency to lie. The problem is: where is the lie located, and where is the truth?

And how consistent can they be - if they would indeed be lying to doctors? And even if they are lying, should they be stopped? Perhaps they will be happier in achieving gender reassignment (even if they are doing it for the "wrong" reasons).

[identity profile] citrusy-fun.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
BNF really do have a tendency to lie, don't they? It's almost strange phenomenon. I've seen more been caught in lies then I've be shown ones that are truthful and honest to their fans. It's almost along the lines of those who do internet deaths.

Who knows where the lie is in this. For all we know, the lie could be the anon's secret... or they could be entirely truthful. Who knows at this point.

I honestly would hope that no one would travel down the path of reassignment, lying and whatnot, just because they think it might be easier, or for 'respect', or for 'yaoi reasons'. While their possible behavior in the past is unexcusable, one can just hope they find happiness with themselves in the future.

I must say, fortunately I have not much dealing with BNF's...except for the total disappearance of one whose stories I actually liked.

I can only wish both OP and BNF in secret well: I think they both have issues they need to work through. But from what I see here, they're best of working through those issues separately of each other.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not gonna lie, I've totally had thoughts along those lines on several occasions. Although it has nothing to do with being a BNF and more to do with just generally being taken seriously.

I use a pen-name of my initials and my last name, that way people will be more likely to see my work without judging based on my gender.

I find it to be the best compromise on the matter! I'm genderless until they dig a little deeper.

...doesn't work so well in real life, of course. :I

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately in-person is where it counts for me, in this case. I would be hard-pressed to give less of a shit than I currently do whether or not people know my gender on written things.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Why would they do that? It's totally not worth going through an incredibly trying process for such an asinine reason. I mean, I hope so. It's not like you can snap your fingers and bam, gender transitioned.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
There are people who think that way, unfortunately. And that's why I'm actually bothered by it. Especially since they've stated they think male yaoi writers gain more respect. It wouldn't be too big of a stretch to think they can escape sexism aimed at females by transitioning, even though they don't realize the slew of hate they'll get for being trans in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If a cisgendered person transitioned, they would then have to live with the gender identity issues that drive actual transgendered people to transition in the first place. Depending on how far they go, they'll be dealing with tons of hassle, expenses, and pain. I guess there are people like that, but it seems so unlikely to me that any of them would actually go through with it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Just to add another point of view, I don't think I'd be that put off by living in the body of a different gender. I mean, obviously I wouldn't know unless I did it, but I imagine there are people where this wouldn't be a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 09:25 am (UTC)(link)

You think?

There are people who want to cut off healthy limbs and go out to do it and I'm sure that isn't an easy process. It's some type of mental disorder. There are also men who want to be castrated as a fetish/kink and go out of their way to find someone to do it for them and that's life threatening and painful.

I'm sure there are people who want to transition who are just as unbalanced and get through the psyche tests, not the majority by a long shot, but a few.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Those people wanting castration/amputation often also have severe body dysmorphic/identity issues.

I have known one of each, and the guy who wanted amputation actually succeeded, through fairly horrid self-inflicted means. I'd much rather have them being helped by a doctor, than having to bleed out in an alley somewhere.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
It takes years of therapy before most doctors will even consider performIg the surgery, and it's painful and expensive and a big fucking deal to get it done.

I highly doubt anyone would go through that unless they really wanted to do it, and not just to get more respect in online fandom communities. The idea that you, and apparently others, think someone would go through all that pain and cost and so on just for more online respect truly boggles my mind.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
I supose it depends on the doctor/country you're in. Like I said upthread,
there is a man in my town who apparently underwent reassignment surgery because he wanted to be more like Barbie. The scary thing is, he was mentally handicapped before the surgery, yet somehow a doctor still thought he was worth operating on. Sadly, due to his handicap, the surgery went wrong and the man had to be put in a nursing home, stuck in between transitioning.

How he got approved for reassignment surgery is beyond me.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
...Your faith in humanity is astounding. I mention this because I know someone in real life who did just this. They went through the therapy and did a damn good job of faking it, all because she wanted to be a man to gain respect. Not just online communities, but real life. And that's why I'm bothered by the OP. They mentioned the other person thinks male writers get more respect. It doesn't specify just fanfic writers, but writers. And if they think that about just writing, imagine what they think about other things involving the differences in men and women.

The idea that you think some people aren't fucked up enough to try this boggles my mind. Sure, they're not the majority, but not everyone who transitions is going to do so because they're actually trans.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but I'm not. Either they're lying about the surgery, lying about their reason for the surgery, or they're making quite possibly a huge mistake that they'll come to regret in their own time. Either way, nothing I can do about it.
