I totally agree with you, OP. I have had a number of arguments with people even though we essentially agree on the basics ("it's crap"), because of differing assumptions as to why it's popular. (For the record, my argument is "because it manages to tap into something deeply appealing to certain people, let's talk about this, it is interesting! Repressed sexuality and early puberty!" The other approach seems to be "it's popular because it SUCKS," but no, I really don't think it works that way.)

Anyway, it is popular. And it does suck. And a class where you could talk over that dichotomy, figure out why it appealed, compare it to other vampire literature, apply a little feminist theory, talk about the cultural context it became popular in, break it down and find out what makes it tick? That would be amazing. And you can do all that without (gasp) actually liking the book!

Finally, in conclusion, to everyone upthread who was all outraged because "OMG not real literature!": cultural studies. It is a thing.

This.

If you want to study literature and culture, you can't just ignore popular literature, even if it sucks. That's like studying biology and totally ignoring anything to do with insects because you think they're icky.
