I'm waiting for this to come out in October of this year.

I would take that class in a heartbeat. I am probably on the border of 'haters who HATEBLARGHRAGE' and 'haters who can acknowledge the merits of the work', but man, I'd talk about the series in an academic context until the cows came home. (... hell, give me time/the right degree and I'll run that class. Or class on the history of the vampire in English language fiction, yesplz.)

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the films so far, will see the new ones, yet I'm very critical of it...there must be other people out there like that, that you can talk too.

[identity profile] coyoteseven.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
There are college level classes where Twilight is required reading?

Unless it's meant to be a negative example, these better be private institutions.

does anyone know what school that's from? because I feel like I've seen it before, and I don't know if it was online or in my school's bookstore...

[livejournal.com profile] cleolinda does recaps of all the books and pretty much points out all their flaws while trying to understand and explain why these books still appeal to so many people.

Twilight has appeal?
I read the first one for the sake of my friends, who were head over heels in love with the whole thing. It still baffles me to this day.

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I would take that class! Assuming it would really go in-depth with its analysis. I took a college course where we analyzed an absolutely godawful romance novel, and it was amazing. I'm of the opinion that popular literature deserves study just as much as the classics. It's important to analyze what people are actually reading!

[identity profile] captainprowler.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised you can't find more people like that. I read twilight when I was young, enjoying it unironically until before the release of the fourth book, then realizing how bad they all were after finishing breaking dawn. Now I guess I would be classified as a hater who could see the appeal?

[identity profile] frostoria.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've read all four books, and I don't have any strong opinions either way. IMO it's just a series of idealized, wish-fulfillment personal fantasies that are just meant to entertain. Haters are taking this way too seriously (or hating because it's the cool thing to do), and Twi-hards are just in it for the eye candy and so-called "romance".

I wouldn't take the class (spending $400 to discuss Twilight? there's better use of my money), but I would definitely sneak into a couple classes, because it does sound freaking fascinating.

I kind of feel your pain OP. I have pretty serious problems with a lot of the ideas in Twlight (but really, it mostly only bothers me because I see young girls who think the kind of relationship in Twilight is ideal and completely healthy which just makes me worry a bit), but I understand why people like it. It's certainly provided me with ample entertainment. I just wish the fandom would focus more on characters other than Bella and Edward and Jacob.

I want to read fic about Carlisle and his awesome pre-Edward adventures, because I think he was around a couple of centuries before he turned Edward, and his life was probably really interesting. I want angsty fic about Charlie and the dissolution of his marriage. I want Volturri fic, because they're some freaky bastards who probably have vampire orgies or whatever, which interests me. Hell there were a ton of new vampires introduced in Breaking Dawn for what seemed like no reason, I wouldn't mind reading something about those guys. Leah is kind of badass, how about some awesome fic about that? There are just so, so many characters that are barely developed.

I always thought it was kind of funny that when you get past all the crap about Bella and Edward's weird ass "romance" (I use the term loosely, because I honestly find nothing romantic about their creepy relationship. But some darkfic about it? Yeah, that could be interesting), Meyer actually created a lot of characters that potentially could be really interesting, but we don't find out a lot about them since the books are centered on Bella and Edward and are told in her point of view. I'd like to discuss them with people, but all anyone ever cares about is Bella, Edward, or Jacob (and sometimes Alice or whatever).

I was a hater who was approaching the whole RAEGARBLEHATE level until I realized how silly it all was. Also, that I was unemployed and unhappy at the time.

But whilst amongst the haters! I discovered many a wannabe published writer whose stuff was just as bad, or worse, than Twilight, while doing the same dang things that they complained made Twilight wrongwrongWRONG. I have also noticed this pattern amongst haters of other stories.

I absolutely see the appeal of Twilight, from the perspective of a vampire lover. That's also where most of my complaints come from since, no, Twilight did little to nothing new with vampires. The repackaging of familiar elements was genius though.

[identity profile] tari-silmarwen.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I would love to have a place like that. I've read the books and I enjoyed them for what they were and I guess I consider myself a fan but I can also see the legitimate complaints people have about the series and want to discuss that in a nice neutral place that isn't on either end of the fandom-hatedom extremes.

[identity profile] generalstolas.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
This was an Honors English class (mostly for freshmen) offered at the Ohio State University back in '09. IIRC it was about the supernatural in fiction works. Twilight was their go to modern/"where's the supernatural in fiction now" example.

The link to the syllabus is here: http://english.osu.edu/administration/syllabi/syl261hGarchaAu09.doc

Basically it wasn't just a class only on Twilight, so don't get your hopes up.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
...that's not a real course packet, is it? What is the name of this course, Purple Prose and Verbal Diarrhea?

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I had a great conversation about Twilight with my mom last year. She's a high school English teacher and when it came to book report time, almost all the girls in her class chose Twilight books or similar fare. I have read all the books so I turned into her translator/guide into the world of Twilight. She's not a fan of them, but she's just so happy that her students are actively reading she looks past it.

I wish more people would swallow their hipster rage and focus their energies on productive tasks. *wistful sigh*

I feel bad for whoever posted this secret. I have great conversations about the flaws, appeal and under-utilized characters in Twilight with open-minded friends in the Twilight fan fiction fandom. We are fairly isolated from most of the other Twilight fan communities (though we have it's share of haters). Despite those few exceptions I have found a little pocket of the Twilight fandom that is supportive, intelligent and more importantly sane.

I've been in and out of countless fandoms for over a decade. Haters happened, everywhere, but there are also safe heavens of sanity somewhere in every fandom. Sometimes it's only a handful of people on a locked community. Sometimes it's a yahoogroup, or just you and the friends you pull into the fandom. Sanity can be found in fandoms, even in the Twilight fandom.

If you're reading this thread and want to have these types of discussions about Twilight canon or (like the anon commenter in this thread) want to read well written (often times better than the original books) Twilight fan fiction hit me up at my LJ. I have a long list fan fic to rec. I love to talk about the books and characters, and I can point you towards other fans that would love to talk about the books too.

[identity profile] zoey-says.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I could've swore there was a secret similar to this a couple months back. Anyways, they exist, but I suppose they're harder to find. I probably fall into that category as I see the series had so much potential and I don't hate the first book, but it has glaring flaws. *cough*Breaking Dawn is a GIANT ASS flaw...*ahem* But I don't go near the Twilight fans or the anti-Twilight crowd... so...

Twilight and Philosophy: Vampires, Vegetarians, and the Pursuit of Immortality (http://www.amazon.com/Twilight-Philosophy-Vegetarians-Immortality-Blackwell/dp/0470484233) might be a good book to read. I've been meaning to take a peek at it. Maybe in the winter time. :/

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a LOLfan who understands its appeal and think it's psychologically fascinating, as well as disturbing, problematic, cringey and hilarious...!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I totally agree with you, OP. I have had a number of arguments with people even though we essentially agree on the basics ("it's crap"), because of differing assumptions as to why it's popular. (For the record, my argument is "because it manages to tap into something deeply appealing to certain people, let's talk about this, it is interesting! Repressed sexuality and early puberty!" The other approach seems to be "it's popular because it SUCKS," but no, I really don't think it works that way.)

Anyway, it is popular. And it does suck. And a class where you could talk over that dichotomy, figure out why it appealed, compare it to other vampire literature, apply a little feminist theory, talk about the cultural context it became popular in, break it down and find out what makes it tick? That would be amazing. And you can do all that without (gasp) actually liking the book!

Finally, in conclusion, to everyone upthread who was all outraged because "OMG not real literature!": cultural studies. It is a thing.

I like the books in a guilty pleasure kind of way, and appreciate them in a 'cultural study' kind of way. And I'm really getting tired of haters. I'd totally chat with you, anon.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually pretty neutral on the whole thing. I've read the books (bought the last one, which was awful haha) and I've seen the movies, so far, with my friends. They really enjoy the first one (and I admit it was well done) but they don't like it when I pick it apart. =)

I do enjoy elements she has in her series (the vampire culture and their powers) as well as with the werewolves but I wish that the dominant Mary/Gary-sue writing wasn't so prevalent, it made me really not like the books as a whole. =( On occasion though she had a few good sentences/paragraphs that made me go 'hmm that's nice'. But out of her four books, it was really rare. =(

But yeah I'd like to discuss it with you if you'd like. =D I'm always up for that stuff because it has just enough to be fun but not enough to really talk about more. A lot of 'what ifs', I think.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-16 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I checked this entire series out of the library and read them all just so I could have discussions like these.

I think the series is a pretty miserable piece of literature, to be honest, but it obeys the absolute #1 rule of writing fiction: it keeps you turning the pages. For the life of me I don't know how, but once you start you want to keep on reading. YMMV, of course, but I've talked to more than one person who agrees that "It's terrible, but I can't stop reading it!"

Mind you, there were times when I was headdesking at what was written, or bursting out into laughter because something was so ludicrous, or staring at the page and literally saying aloud, "Did I seriously just read that?" But whatever else you can say about Twilight, it kept me turning the pages. I've read a lot of books, and by authors I respect more than Meyer, where I cannot say the same thing.
