Different anon, but I'm confused. How are Japanese and Western animation "entirely different"? They've been mutually influencing each other from the very beginning... I haven't seen any MLP but it's pretty obvious for other shows I've seen that they have an anime influence.

WTF is a false comparison?

A comparison drawn using incorrect reasoning.

For example, people who describe MLP:FiM as "moe" are incorrect. There is no concept of "moe" in American culture outside otaku circles, and reading MLP:FiM as such is ascribing contextual meanings to it that do not actually apply in the larger cultural framework.

Except "moe" isn't really incorrect. From whay I understand it's a pretty vague term, even in Japanese. What's "moe" to one person might not be to another. So, while it's not "correct" it's not really "incorrect" either.

Saying "oh that can't be moe because it's American/Western"...Yeah, no.

So by that logic you shouldn't be able to say "moe" about anime characters that were made before that term existed, since they were conceived outside that specific cultural framework as well.

This is a really ridiculous argument because generally speaking, creators in anime/manga don't design characters hoping people will call them "moe", moe is something people who consume the character decide. As long as you have the definition correct it can apply to any character created in any culture.
