It's funny, it's the exact second thing I decided about the show (the first was shipping Rainbow Dash/Twilight Sparkle).

I didn't really think about whether or not I was using anime terminology or not. I just got a feeling that I recognized as moe. and well anything that gives a feeling of moe should have a right to be labeled as such.

[identity profile] yucari.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The lines between J-fandom and Western fandom just keep blurring and blurring.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-18 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't really matter does it? (Is "waifu" even anime-specific anymore?)

I mean, there really aren't English equivalents to some of these terms, so...what to do?

"Moe" doesn't really have a satisfactory English translation, though. Which is why we stole the Japanese word, and are now assimilating it into becoming an English word.

English mugs other languages and steals their vocabulary whenever possible. Get used it it, we've been doing it for a long time.

I just get irritated when some guys call the whole show moe. I know moe has a different meaning for everyone and they're all so adorable, but even Fluttershy is a force of nature, every pony has had a mental breakdown, there's a ton of slapstick and even the frigging Princess is great fun.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-18 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
This seems like a weird thing to get hung up on.

I can see how ~waifu~ would be kind of annoying, but moe? How would you suggest saying that in English?

[identity profile] aquaricom.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
good lord, nothing against the moe anime genre but ommgg that kind of shit is aggravating to read.

I think people use it as a crutch so they dont feel their taste is being compromised because they watch a girly american cartoon.

[identity profile] ich-bin-puppy.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
As if American cartoons haven't been using the "big eyes small mouth" formula for cuteness since they started making them, anyway.

Is there an American equivalent of the term? No? Get off your high horse.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I find some of those cutesy terminologies annoying just on principle, but singling them out because dammit how dare people use those words to discussing AMERICAN CARTOONS, that's just idiotic.

[identity profile] alliterations.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So I suppose we should just stop using words like rendezvous, facade, and bravado because those are from other languages too? If there isn't an English equivalent for whatever you're trying to convey, use the word that's in the other language. Do you think English is special and unique? Hell no, we steal words from all sorts of other languages and I think our vocabulary is better for it.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Why on earth would fandom terminology bother you MORE than non-fandom terminology?
Look, this feud is asinine: anime fans think they're better than cartoon fans because anime is supposed to be more mature and adult, and cartoon fans think they're better than anime fans because anime is supposed to be a bunch of derivative terrible bullshit (and also girls like it ew, adult cartoon fans are always men don'tcha know).
I do not give the tiniest shit if you think anime is all terrible, or if you think cartoons are all immature. That's your opinion, as wrong as I think it is, and there is no accounting for taste.
But going on a crusade to try and keep the two camps apart is pointless and irritating. Despite the assertion that cartoon and anime culture are completely separate, many adult animation fans in the USA like both western cartoons and anime. So people will use terms from one to talk about the other. It's not about being super-special, it's about the fact that sometimes terms from one apply to the other.

tl;dr Deal with it.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If a word can effectively communicate the point across to the people you're talking to, it doesn't matter if it's a loanword only used in fandom circles. There's really nothing wrong with it. You're not being imprecise or confusing or anything, especially since MLP fandom is overrun with 4channers. (Heck, Firefox spellcheck won't recognize "fandom" or "anime" as words either, for that matter.) Anime fandom isn't some tiny internet ghetto which people should never borrow words from no matter how applicable.

...and my dislike of anime which rely on moe moe characters is just the excuse I need not to watch MLP!

How dare they defile the purity of America with their filthy Japan-talk!

[identity profile] junoluver.livejournal.com 2011-06-19 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Had to look up "moe" to even know what it meant. I prefer not to label characters as anything, I don't even like the rampant usage of "Mary Sue" so I can see the dislike of silly fan terminology.

But I long for the day when people just see cartoons as cartoons regardless of country of origin. I'm an animator, I like animation, if it's good I don't care what country made it. Arguing over anime vs cartoons is irrelevant, they're BOTH CARTOONS end of story.

[identity profile] teira-chan.livejournal.com 2011-06-19 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, that's a minor thing to get so riled up over.

Considering a good bit of the show's message could be "Tolerate people who have habits that bother you because otherwise they might be pretty awesome! :D", I really feel like some people miss the point.

Also, OH HEY NEWSFLASH not everyone who uses terms like that are weeaboos.

FFS, people.

Secondly, does this mean I can't use English terminology to speak about Japanese cartoons without disgusting you as well?

[identity profile] impurrfectprof.livejournal.com 2011-06-19 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
No media is created in a bubble. I don't think it's all that odd to think that MLP could've been influenced by anime (particuarly after the anime boom in the USA) and there's nothing wrong with using another country's word for something that doesn't have a decent definition in your own language.

I sure laughed out loud when I read this sophisticated critique in the big blue box. "Post-Anime take on the beautiful Nickelodeon style of minimalism".
*adds a monocle and a cup of Earl Grey to this sentence* Wonderful!
