No media is created in a bubble. I don't think it's all that odd to think that MLP could've been influenced by anime (particuarly after the anime boom in the USA) and there's nothing wrong with using another country's word for something that doesn't have a decent definition in your own language.

Okay, at first glance I definitely thought this was an account for a catgirl version of Otacon from Metal Gear Solid.

I'm actually always surprised when people go to anime as an influence first, and totally not connecting that...it's done by thesame woman who worked on PowerPuff girls. The style is much more PP than anime, inmho.

Yeah, that's a good point. And PPG...it had a few anime-ish things with, like, the action lines and such but it wasn't a big distinctly obvious anime style like the Airbender series or Teen Titans.

I think I've seen a guide to drawing "cute characters" by a Disney artist from the 50s or so that had rules like...big eyes, etc. So part of the "animesque" style is just...following those rules.
